Kurust by hammerite is good for surface rust, converts the rust back to stable working surface, this is what I used.

I would personally recommend getting a tool called a cold knife it's kind of like a hook flat blade goes underneath the edge of the glass skims over when we had to look like hook shears the glue off it's much safer and quicker. Oh and it shouldn't damage the car.

Only problem with the hook is it's not always deep enough to cut through all the glue. The wire always works.

I use a putty knife and soapy water to pull windshields ....I've yet to break one since I started doing it that way! Takes just as long as using a wire too.
