Waking up a 90s Japanese Turbo AWD classic - Will this Real Barn Find run? In this special barnfind episode Jonny Smith meets his friend's mother-in-law whose recent illness means she has re-evaluated life and decided to get her favourite car back on the road after more than a decade of barn hibernation. The car is a WRC hero that's definitely not the sort of machine you'd expect an older lady to drive.

My dad (rest in peace) always had great cars but the dark green Impreza 2000 turbo he had which was one of the first in the country (L371 FBO) was by far my favourite. Lots of fond memories in that car and I’d often peer through the living room window at it at night just to see it sat outside. It looked (and went!) like a rocketship.

I was lucky enough to have an apprenticeship at a Subaru (and Rover) Dealership between 96-98.. these things were only just hitting the scene. On the PDI we were told to drive them at least 20 miles, and drive them quite hard because the ECU would 'learn' how someone drives and adapt itself.... I'm sure it was a load of rubbish, however, as a 17/18 yr old, I was quite happy to do as I was told haha
@richardgledhill
@richardgledhill 16 сағат бұрын
There was a small element of truth in that... The ECU would learn the maximum boost it could apply for the fuel type (95, 98 etc) without detting (lean-burn). I used to reset the ECU when I put a new tank of V-Power in, if someone else had put 95 in, as the ECU would have adjusted back to 95 RON fuel.
@TomleyRC

I had a MY2000 version of that car, but with the Prodrive Performance Pack, and it was brilliant - most fun car I've ever owned and probably ever will. Such a light, nimble car with an incredibly addictive turbo boost. I hit 151mph (GPS indicated) on an autobahn in Germany once and it was still accelerating! Wonderful car. Thanks Jonny! By the way, we've booked a long weekend away in your part of the world, and we'll be dropping in on Ignition Cars and Coffee to see your cars (and you if you happen to be there!). Take care as always.

I just started my mk6 Celica yesterday that hasn't ran in 12 years. Unfortunately I didn't have a garage or a shed to keep it in so there is some rust (and other stuff) that needs a lot of work. However, it fired up on the first turn of the key with a new battery on it. Unbelievable how good Japanese engineering was and is. Can't wait to get it back on the road.

Had 6 Imprezas over 15 years due to the late great Colin McRae. Amongst them I had a P1 for 3 years and a 98 JDM RA which was epic. Having been away from them for 10 years I’m now sort of back in a Scooby. A kit car that runs a 320bhp forged flat four engine, GC8 AWD and 900kg called a Murtaya. Google it if you’re bored, was the original rally demo car 😉

Love that they’ve kept it and good to see it in relatively roadworthy condition. Used to love seeing and hearing these out and about 10-15yrs ago when they were quite common. Now you only see the odd one every now and then which is a real shame. The more modern cars of today just don’t have the same X factor especially the EVs and hybrids.

This has been basically a dream car of mine my entire life so thank you for reminding me just how smitten I am with them even after all these years. When I was little I was frequently around them growing up in Essex in the early '00s when these were truly the council estate terror they're known for in the UK, I remember getting a 1;40 pullback toy of a black blobeye wrx bought for me which became the hero car in my "big car" collection around that time and I spent ages even when I was probably only 6 or 7 thinking to myself how I would fly to Japan and drive one home as you do. I have a ton of reasons that the Impreza holds a special place in my heart from being this car of the moment right as I was becoming aware of and into cars and it's great to see one coming back to life.

The 2 litre engine (ie 2000) was much more robust than the 2.5 because all the did to get the extra displacement was to bore it over which weakened the cylinder walls just enough to cause them to move microscopically which would wear down the notoriously bad gen 1/gen 2 head gaskets. It took subaru a long time to develop an MLM gaskets that would stand up to being boosted.

I had an estate of this shape Impreza, the boot was very small, it was a 1.8 N/A so very slow and crap on fuel! 😅 As with most people who own a Subaru, you always want another, so a few years later I had a Legacy Spec B estate, that was a great car! 👍 3 litre flat 6 with a 6 speed manual! 👌

Was so hoping it’d be an Impreza and the best shape too. Had a UK Turbo 2000 for a good few years, my dad bought it new as a retirement present to himself, the only car I’ve sold I still look for. 😢

They were very much an "if you know you know" car originally, I remember my sister who isn't in to cars at all laughing at the size of the spoiler on one and saying "who puts a spoiler like that on a car like that?" I live in Lanarkshire in Scotland and they were hugely popular around here for obvious reasons, for a long time the McRae WRC car was on display at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow.

I’ve probably had 20 scoobys in my time from uk turbo 2000 to type R’s to spec c.. also ran the biggest club in the southwest at one point and there’s definitely something about them!! Ive met life long friends just because of a car I’ve owned… I thought my scooby days were over until I seen this, now I’m looking again 🤣🤣🤣 dam you Jonny 🤣🤣
