1944 is a song written and performed by Ukrainian singer Jamala. It represented Ukraine in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017.

The song is about the deportation of the Crimean Tatars. Basically, an ethnic cleansing (several thousand died, in the process). Some of the lyrics are in the Crimean Tatar language. That's why it's such an emotional song.
