My dad's 1981 Shogun MTB was stolen twice in the late 80s, both times from our garage at night. Both times, we found someone riding it about 2 miles away when we were just driving. Verified the serial number with the rider and got the bike back. The second time the person riding told us who he bought it from, that individual was a known thief. So we reported this to the police, and no more bike thefts since. We still have the bike to this day.

I have an Airtag hidden on my bike with a fake Airtag nearby in a more obvious location. Theory is if a theif realises there is an Airtag on the bike they would find the fake one first. Not a watertight solution but for $5 extra it could keep the real one on the bike for a bit longer.

My racebike got stolen last Saturday in Baden, Switzerland when being parked at the pub. I looked on the phone and saw its location. Went there and found it parked behind a bus stop somewhere about 15km away from the pub. It was locked with two fresh locks. I called the police and after having proven that it is indeed my bike they opened the lock and helped bringing the bike back to the city. Without the airtag no chance of finding it. I hide the AirTag in a little plastic box that I can put underneath the bottle holder.

Security tags are pointless when the Police are not interested in investigating bike thefts. I had three high-value bikes pinched from my garage last year - the crooks drilled out the door locks and hinges, then prized the garage door open just wide enough to be able to get the bikes out. The Police turned up to investigate five days later, by which time my bikes were long gone. And you never ever want to try tracking down the bike yourself, because you could find yourself on the wrong side of the law, and you could potentially get hurt if there's an altercation. It's just not worth it.

there's simply too much crime and too few cops, and no budget , to give hours chasing down bikes. That's the reality. And it has little to do with value - as a $100 bike that gets someone to work or college, is as important as a $2000 ego ride. Deport crims, if they are deportable. Pay more Tax for more cops ...or just treat your ride like a very expensive fone - and never park it up unsafely. For now, there's just no answer. (ask a Motorbike owner how things are on the robbery front....)

What about doing a full review of Apple Air Tag, Samsung Smart Tag & Tile tags in a separate video, on actually how good they're, how well they work, easy to hide & other general features
@markianross
@markianross 26 күн бұрын
These devices are only as good as the availability of the network they connect to and this is governed by how many devices they can connect to. Apple currently wins simply because there are so many Apple devices around. Google's will be similar to Apple when it launches, possibly better because there are a lot of Android devices around. Tile is practically useless because it needs to connect to a phone with the Tile app installed in order for tracking to work - and practically no one has the Tile app on their phone. Samsung I would imagine is somewhere in the middle because whilst there are a lot of Samsung devices out there, there's still a lot less than the total number of Android / Apple devices.

A problem here in that States is confronting the person who stole your bike. You might be on the wrong end of a gun in some areas. Also, depending on where you live the local police may not be interested in helping you retrieve your bike, especially if it is in someone's home. Ebikes will be a big target and many are over 1000.00 in costs making it a felony to steal. It is going to be a while for this to sink in culturally for local areas that these are felonious crimes and need to be pursued as if a car has been stolen. Also, bike jacking can be very confrontational in some cities and dangerous.

Thank you for not including locks, the only difference is how long it takes to cut through. Trackers, are you going to find it yourself and confront them? Police don't care about stolen bikes. Better let the thieves have them than lose your life or be physically injured for the rest of your life. All my bikes are insured, but the good ones don't get locked up, they are for riding from home and coming home, ONLY. I have a really nice strong bike I paid $180 US for, I use this for in town errands, it does get locked up. The loss is reduced by price of the bike. I use three locks a U-lock bar, a large diameter cable lock and a chain lock; this simply adds to the time to cut and steal. I am a full time cyclist, no car, 100% bicycle transportation. Commuting, work trips with load, touring, training, cargo hauler.

Make sure you have the serial number regardless of if your Bilke is chipped/Air tagged or not. A coworker had his bike stolen from outside a market, a heavy U lock was cut. The following week it was posted for sale on Craigslist with a picture. The victim called to buy it and went over to the thief's house with the police. The police asked the victim if he had the serial number and he said no, the police said they couldn't do anything about it and left. This was in the U.S.

Two facts happening in Mexico. 1. Doesn't matter if you have a cool or ugly used bike, the thefts take it to resell it in paw shop. Is easy money for this people. 2. There are thefts who search components in Google and check the prices, then dismantled and sell to any unscrupulous store.

I had my bike stolen but managed to get a few of the parts back off various sellers on eBay. I got the forks, wheels, brakes and rear mech back. When I asked each seller where they got them from they all said car boot sales around the Heathrow area. I visited a few of these sale in the hope that I might spot more parts off my bike, but didn’t. What did surprise me was the fact that we live nearly 100miles from these car boot sales so the low life criminals were prepared to travel a long way to steal and sell the bits and also how many people are clearly selling stolen stuff (mainly power tools and bikes) at these car boot sales. When I spoke to them they didn’t care, they would say things like “it’s not mine, I’m just selling it” or “I’ve never seen this stuff before”. One of them was happy to sing the Oliver Twist song got to pick a pocket or two at full volume. Interesting most of them had a certain accent….

When I posted them on social media I had literally tons of chancers trying to say they were theirs, Wanting me to drop them through the door of random addresses. As where they were found was near my work I offered to meet them at the police station. Amazing how many did not turn up or come back to me saying "sorry I have found mine" . Ironicly I have found a couple of pairs since and the abuse I got when I said I would drop them off at the police station with the Facebook ID of the guy who was going to pick them up as I was working away. @@gourami7 I don't normally like negative comments, but you are 100% right about this. The whole conversation about tracking in case of theft is a complete waste of breath. Only a small percentage of people will get their bikes back, and the police are not worried about it. I know a person who tracked their stolen laptop to an address, reported it to police (the Met), and the police said they wouldn't go over there, and also forbade them from going over there to try and get it back. And that was it.

I never bothered with GPS tags. Bike theft is so common that the police rarely put the effort into them, unless they’re going after a group who has stolen multiple (20+). I just file a police report and inform my home insurance. I’ve had 2.5 bikes stolen and my insurance gets a new one within a week or two. The third one was just stripped of most of its parts so that was technically vandalism, not theft. All parts and upgrades were under insurance as well.

Common sense thoughts: if you do need to leave a bike outside, 1. For cheap bikes: lock it with a bolt-cutter-resistant lock. 2. For mid range bike: a)register with local bike registry; b) lock it with an angle-grinder-resistant lock; 3) for an expensive bike: a) register the local bike registry; b) buy bike insurance c) lock with a lock required by the insurer. I don’t like the idea of air tags because police would take no action and I don’t want to confront thieves either. My life and health is worth more than my bike. In comments section there are examples where air tags helped because the bike was found locked elsewhere but unattended. But it is a matter of luck. Btw what constitutes the above price ranges is subjective. As a general rule, you should,only insure things whose loss would have a serious effect on your well being. For me, it is only my health, house and car.

I'd like to tell the Tech team about the Knogg Scout. A "FindMy" compatible bike tracker and alarm. It hides on bottle mounts, is recordable and using the app, you can set an audible alarm on the Scout. The alarm is loud enough to be noticed but I don't see it will have thieves running from your bike. The tracking is as good or better than an AirTag, and it's not hidden within the bike. I combine the Kong Scout with two different locks, hoping that two different types of lock will need two different tools to break into lock, and maybe the thief won't have both tools with them ...

they've already made those videos. the point they make at the start is true though you can lock it up as much as you want if somebody really wants it they can get it regardless. Lock Picking Lawyer can get into the best locks in less than 5 minutes. I don't think he has a single video that's longer than 12 minutes and most of that time is spent discussing why the lock sucks, or what was good about it. most locks he doesn't even have to pick. somebody less skilled will take much longer, but picking isn't even the biggest issue, bike thieves don't care about the lock, and it's faster to just wear something that looks official and grind it off. besides I've seen other videos where the person wasn't even wearing anything that looked official, they were right out in the open, and nobody even hesitated to see what was going on. now I don't know conspicuous the cameras filming the incident were, but the fact that very few people even looked while somebody was grinding off a lock should tell you all you need to know about a bike without a camera on a tripod nearby.

Best and final solution for stopping bike theft: standardise serial numbers on bike frames and create a system where you can track the buying and selling of bikes. Just like the way we do with cars. So when you buy a used bike just search in the database to see who is the owner. The police should also have access or create the system. And it should be worldwide or at least region wide.

I usually never park my bicycle unattended/out of sight, and even so, before temporarily parking it I always put it in the hardest possible gear to initially slow down a potential daring thief who tries to just grab the bike behind my back and ride away. It's not easy to accelerate from standstill in biggie-smalls, even more so if the Di2 has gone to sleep after a while and takes an extra click to wake up.

My 2018 Norco Search XR AXS was nicked off of my car rack while I ran into the supermarket to grab dinner. Fortunately, my homeowners insurance had full replacement coverage. The replacement cost was just over 8k. State Farm and my lbs really came through to get me a replacement bike in time for my local gravel race. If my bike were to be recovered, I would need to repay the insurance company. Only 5% of stolen bikes in the USA are recovered and returned to their owners. Make sure you have a locking car rack, know your serial number, and have recent photos of you and your bike. Also, keep your receipts. A check with your insurance agent is also worthwhile.

I won't leave my bike anywhere, locks aren't worth a spit , thieves carry battery powered tools / hacksaw , if they cannot get the lock off they will just trash the frame to steal the parts. Spending 10000 euro on a road bike is great if you have deep pockets however cycles of that price just invite thieves , also consider bike jacking it does happen,so be consider where you ride too. Had the same problem with expensive motorcycles the thieves would clock a bike they want to steel follow it maybe to the persons home and steal it. Had a ride on a test bike at the dealers and was warned not to leave it anywhere as a few weeks before a chap had taken one out for a test ride,popped home and it was stolen from his drive, (BMW HP 8 £ 25000 at the time ) sad state 😢

The idea of tags would be to track your location without storing more then immediate data, unless you enact the locator function. So if your bike was nicked, you go to the local constabulary, provide the locator id, and let the local constable deal with doing the actual recovery.

I didn't see you mention this, but Knog makes a device that bolts onto a bottle cage (you can bolt the cage over it), it comes with mounting screws that require a special tool to easily remove. It acts as an alarm if someone moves your bike and an air tag. You can arm and/or disarm the alarm from your phone when near the bike. It works well, but you can't really use it with a shared bike rack as someone putting their bike on the rack may set it off. (the air tag tracking still works of course). It is IOS specific though like others you mentioned. It is rechargeable and the charge lasts a good while depending on how often you leave it armed.

You can avoid being a vigilante by first registering your bike with a database. Police can use that, any proof of purchase info if new, and knock on the perp's door for you. Not leaving it in an unseen place helps too. Or maybe under a cover. Anything that annoys or slows down the thief.

As much as I agree that locks aren't perfect, a few years ago my commuter bike was kept in a shared bike store in the block of flats I lived in (my aero road bike stayed in the flat). The store was broken into in the night twice in my time there. Every bike with a wire lock was stolen, some visibly less valuable than mine, and every bike with a D lock was left including mine. It shouldn't be seen as foolproof, but a D lock does provide a meaningful extra touch of protection.

You didn’t talk about a device i think it’s somewhat better than an AirTag. The scout by knog. I have installed them on my bikes and like you say there is no infalible solution but i like this one because it has its own app and you can “arm” the device from your phone when you leave your bike somewhere. Then when armed and the bike is moved it sounds avery loud noticeable alarm, on your phone and from the bike itself. At least the thief will be drawing attention as he is taking the bike: it can be installed underneath a bottle cage and it requires a special screw driver to be removed. At least it will make noise as they steal your bike 🤷🏻‍♂️

NB you can't keep a tag in the frame because it acts as a Faraday Cage and blocks all signals completely. So it makes it harder to hide one, but there are plenty of ideas. I use a Eufy tracker that's a bit cheaper than AirTag, can be secured with a cable tie and has access to the FindMy network. It makes me feel a whole lot better, and when my bike was left behind at Berlin airport I immediately reported it in London and I honestly believe that the fact it was tagged and I could be certain about its location helped facilitate a speedy return, which was within a few days remarkably. I'm probably insane enough to follow the blue dot if it suddenly started moving without me but I'm grateful for the heads up that this might not be the best thing to do.

HipLock dx1000 + Knog Scout (or even just ordinary HipLock Dx) and that's it. You can leave bike if you want to go to store or drink coffee in caffe cuz you wont be far away from bike so Bluetooth connection will be established with your phone and no one will be able to get the bike "quickly" cuz of the lock, so the second someone tries to break the lock Knog scout will send the notification to your phone that someone is trying to touch your bike - easy

just be aware that the endpoint masking used by Strava and Komoot is not unhackable, and it's been proven that the route data contains all the information needed to determine the actual location of your starting point. a person with ill intent who knows enough about coding could use your route data to make a good guess about your actual endpoint. a person with the data of three routes could determine the exact endpoint. I say this based on information from the way Strava did it last year, komoot uses a polygonal mask rather than a circular one, but I'm not sure that makes much difference to the process shown in the Black Hat conference

Had a co worker who's bike was stollen and the thief left a "junker" in it's place. It wasn't;t a bad looking bike Just obviously old but it was a far better frame than what she had lost so the husband of another one of our co workers helped her restore the bike and put a better quality derailleur on it and she actually made off better in this situation. And because the bike looked dated she had no issues with theft again. It's part of the reason I wouldn't dream of replacing my 1997 era Trek bike. It doesn't look cool anymore but it is a solid machine and no one other than kids misbehaving would consider stealing a bike that probably has a value of $60 these days. Unless you are doing specialty riding an old dated frame is a good way to deter theft as that tech really hasn't changed much since the safety bicycle was invented.

When discs came into MTB, nobody moaned around that we should keep rim brakes.

Good work lads ya videos are always rad! Tbh I just walk into shops with mine like im allowed. Only been asked to leave once. Its that old adage if you act like youre allowed head up and not afraid to engage in banter with staff people pay less or no attention to the bike. As a youngster i knew bike thieves so know a good one can crack anything. Somewhat harder if the owner has it in hand. Most bike thieves are opportunistic and not looking for a potential fight for a bike...at least in the city where I live. Its a sad one for road bikes as good ones go for very cheap money comparatively in the stolen market, as mountain bikes are vogue for the people who buy so they have an ideaq whats good spec etc but have no ideas about road bikes other than they are light. Question do many other riders here take their bikes into shops to avoid the need to leave it?

Occasional replacement is cheaper than bike insurance and knowing where your stolen bike is, isn't a lot of use if the police won't help you recover it.
