Is the glass half full or half empty? 🥛 Turns out, the way that you present a situation to people can really change how they feel about it - our brains tend to fixate on the negative aspects over the positive ones.
Alison Ledgerwood, a UC Davis professor of psychology, studies how people tend to get stuck in particular ways of thinking and what they can do to get unstuck. Can we stop the negative thoughts?

Ways I get out of negative thinking: 1. Embracing positive thoughts, I look around and find the silver lining in ten things. 2. Visualization. I think back to a good memory and relive in or imagine something. 3. I reframe negative thoughts. Once I notice a negative thought, I find the cognitive distortion as there always is one and reframe the thought into a positive one.

"First thing in the morning, imagine yourself tremendously happy. Get out of bed in a very happy mood - radiant, bubbling, expectant - as if something perfect, of infinite value, is going to happen today. Get out of the bed in a very positive and hopeful mood, with the feeling that this day is not going to be an ordinary day - that something exceptional, extraordinary, is waiting for you; something is very close by. Try and remember it again and again for the whole day. Within seven days you will see that your whole pattern, your whole style, your whole vibration, has changed. When you go to sleep in the night, just imagine that you are falling into divine hands...as if existence is supporting you, that you are in its lap, falling asleep. Just visualize it and fall asleep. The one thing to carry is that you should go on imagining and let sleep come, so that the imagination enters into sleep; they are overlapping. Don’t imagine any negative thing, because if people who have an imaginative capacity imagine negative things, they start happening. If you think that you are going to get ill, you will get ill. If you think that somebody is going to be rude to you, he will be. Your very imagination will create the situation. So if a negative idea comes, immediately change it to a positive thought. Say no to it. Drop it immediately; throw it away. Within a week you will start feeling that you are becoming very happy - for no reason at all. "

As I could observe about myself, I'm really being hardwired for negative thoughts. It makes me feel being a silly, dumb, ugly, or stupid person is better than being a smart, normal, gifted, skillful, and confident person, yeah that's true. That feeling like someone or something is forcing me or compelling me to stay on the negative side, because negative side is better than the positive side. It even makes every regular activities a hard work, like thinking, socializing regularly, learning, communicating, understanding a simple sentence, and make decisions. It's even impossible to convey my real emotions. I couldn't even cry what I feel or tear it out. It mostly tooks away all the abilities that you have, that's how unbelievably powerful this condition what I have is. I even almost took for granted my ability to understand, communicate, compose a sentence, and any other activities involving development, learning, communicating, and thinking because of this strong and compulsive negative desire, though it dissapears for a while, then it just suddenly appears back quickly. I could only act like a normal person for a while like for 2 to 3 days, but when me, being a stupid and opposite person, are more often like it lasts for a weeks or a month, though it's not continuous. Yeah It's so aggressively debilitating and compelling, yet I'm trying to fight and eradicate it; I'm trying to change the directions of my heart and brain that I'm able to be completely conscious and mentally awake again; and one thing I have to add, and share to y'all, bcoz I've been really holding this in my mind within already a long time, is that there's someone or imaginary people in my mind, although they don't seem like a real person, they keep telling me that "You're a normal person, that's only a challenge that has been given to you, so you have to fight it, your negative desires are strong, but you are stronger than them, don't give up! You are yourself, prove that you are undefeated, we always had your back and always support you, though you don't have real friends to motivate you" They keep encouraging me and motivating me to stay strong and invincible because I'm strong. And yes, I truly learned and realized a lot from them, then I realized, you could actually make a lot of friends and companions from your own. But honestly and genuinely, It's still so hard to change my heart and mind, I missed being a normal person like I used to be, before, please just help pray for me guys that I could succeed through this journey, I'm still 16 years old, still learning and studying, yet I already have to face and experience this big problem like no one has ever experienced yet. Anyways, I'm so glad that I finally have the ability or words to share or voice out this to y'all😭

First I have spent enormous time rewiring my nervous system so that now the emotions that arise in response to perceived negativity, are no longer overwhelming. This allows me to snap out of triggered/survival states in minutes. This creates space between me and my emotions. In this space, I over and over again make the choice to shift my focus from the negative to the positive. While I do that, I also take a moment to observe both sides and revel in how fascinating and satisfying is to reprogram myself. From that point, it feels like when I find the right thread to pull out in a knot. It all dissolves in one move. Then I get back to the situation and approach it from a positive standpoint. My heart opens and my physiology responds to the positive feeling giving me a sense of uplift and gratitude. Self-awareness is key and most importantly soooo much gentleness and compassion towards yourself is needed to do this work properly.

I definitely feel u💯I went through the same thing and still am, but I can tell you my friend, that you simply need healing. To heal you need to understand your emotions and where they come from, understanding will give u peace by letting u feel secure in urself and ur SELF IMAGE. Sit in silence and EXPERIENCE your negative thoughts / feelings and breathe; observe where they stem from. That’s what u need to heal, u need to shift ur perspectives on basically everything… BECAUSE HOW U DO ONE THING IS HOW U DO EVERYTHING💯change ur body movements, try new things… U just need more time healing, you can definitely go to proffessionals for help but I would advise u don’t try medication to calm ur nerves. Get into physical training and exercise and make ur diet super beneficial for the body ( like the athletes eat ) haha. I hope u or anyone else took the time to read this💙I’m not a professional but I speak from experience and the heart. You got this just hang in there and find positive habits that u enjoy as well. I think the issue here is people need to stop REACTING to the negative thought. The reaction is the issue not the thought. Who labels the thought....us. It's biologically in us to have thoughts what we react to is what we give power. Easier said then done I know but truly look at the thought if it's scaring you then it's not from you...it's not you. Learn to separate and label them so you can learn when they come that they aren't yours they are just freely coming through. Humans have 50k thoughts a day 40k are negative 10k are positive. As humans we tend to focus on negative for survival but it's up to us to change the way we view them and how we label them. I wish you all luck and can honestly tell you as someone who suffered from intrusive thoughts it doesn't go away BUT IT GETS BETTER AND YOU LEARN TO NOT GIVE A s#it about the thoughts. God bless you all, you are all in my prayers 🙏

I think about the things that happened to me and were actually good. Sometimes we miss counting the good things that might have happened to us . Usually, we don't do it intentionally. We do it because we have always been taught to be extra harsh on ourselves. We should make it a habit to reflect on the good things. For example- the last two years of my University life weren't as productive as it should have been (because of some personal reasons), but one afternoon when I judged my overall performance, I was shocked to find out the extremely good things I had achieved even during the lowest phase of my life. It made me grateful and hopeful ❣️. I hope my experience helps others who need this.❤️ Don't be too harsh on yourself. You will heal and you are going to be well one day🎉

I used to have the same problem. The fact is that "positive thinking" can be toxic and invalidating or lead to internal conflict. It works for SOME people, but check out the Huffington Post article "Why Positive Affirmations Don't Work". You're not alone. Also check out the book (for free on the app LIbby) "Rethinking Positive Thinking". You can focus on the positive while acknowledging the negative as long as you practice not dwelling in the negative. For example, you can allow yourself to "vent" in a journal 30 min a day. That way, when negative thoughts cross your mind you can say, "I'm not entertaining this thought right now, I have an appointment to journal about, constructively, at 8pm".

I also want to add that sometimes it might help in the moment to say "Yes, this (negative thing) cand happen, but there are great chances that other things that are better might happen, like (give examples of things that could actually go well). Or, if it is something bad from the past, say to yourself " Yes, it waa difficult and hard, but now I am much older and capable of taking care of myself and choosing what is beat for me/ what to do to add happiness etc." The thing is to 1. Learn to "catch" yourself when you are negative- spiraling 2. Saying stop to that 3. Practicing saying those alternative things (alternative thoughts). It takea time amd practice, but it gets better.

I aim to get out of the dark negative thinking by searching out positive KZbin videos and motivational videos. This helps me to look at different perspectives and boost my self-confidence. However I still find Criminal stories and crime stories informative. I know they say don't listen to crime stories or bad news but it can actually help you to understand that each of us has a choice in life and some people take the extreme negative choice in life. This can be a great info to make Positive Choices by choosing to not be like the criminals in the stories that you see and read daily.

This is a *huge* issue for me. There are so many things in my life that I want to do or try or change (lose weight, eat better, travel in Europe, live in an RV, *date!*, upgrade my career... the list is as long as ... well, it's long). But almost inevitably I get bogged down in this "it'll never work" mindset, and *don't even try*. Of course, who knows if "it" would have worked? I'm not a fortune teller; I can make educated guesses about some things. But in the end, *so much* of life is pure chance, or at least out of my control. But this negativity is a real, concrete, serious problem in life. At the risk of being melodramatic, it is literally keeping me from living my life. Yes, a few times, my negativity bias has helped me in true survival situations. But... those are rare (thankfully!) Far more often, the negativity bias in my thinking leads me to depression and anxiety, and keeps me from living the life I want to live. Double-plus ungood.

By remembering information like this helps me, in the moment, to not believe what my mind is saying to me. If I am not consciously thinking, ie choosing my thoughts in that moment, then more than likely my mind, as this video points out, will think negatively. So more and more I just don't buy into what it is telling me.

This is my struggle with health anxiety, with normal anxiety I combatted it with positive thoughts and feeling in control. Health anxiety is so different because the stakes are higher when you truly believe you’re going to die or suffer permanent pain, and you can’t do anything to control what you perceive as a health issue you either don’t have or don’t understand etc.

Very informative video. To feel better reduce negative thoughts. Be careful what you feed your mind. Avoid comparing yourself physically or mentally with others, reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind [psychsomatic]. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress-anxiety. For a relaxed mind observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 10-15-20 minutes or more. You can sit or lie down, anywhere-anytime, neck straight and eyes closed. Never meditate with expectations but with awareness. Don’t fight your thoughts. With practice the mind will relax. Keep a reminder to observe your breath sensations throughout the day and night --before sleep, when reading, at work, in school, at home, etc with eyes open or closed. Make this a lifetime habit to have a better life. Best wishes--Counsellor.

Every thing we do and have has both a positive and negative side attached to it ...I think if something bad happens and under longer time this prolonged negativity which could have been justified at the time can change your perspective to allways focus on the negative side of things, people, job, realationships, view of yourself etc. I think if we are aware of this we can force ourself to start focusing on the positive aspect of things, situations, life. People have totaly diffrent outcomes based on this intial attitude or I should say focus, I think people who are used to focus on the negative need to become aware that they are doing it and then consiously force themselfs to change to the positive. Im not saying to close your eyes to the negative but shift focus.

So I was called lazy. Can anyone help me with my anger? My dyslexia is really still a pain. I am middle aged and my dyslexia makes life difficult. People still treat me like I am lazy, but I am not. I guess that I am depressed because my dad told me to be an actress. I am not an actress. I feel like I failed.

Cuz ur brain is trying to protect you from threats, as it should. Problem is, in many people’s (but not everyone) daily living (you have food, shelter, companionship…etc) - there are few ‘actual’ threats…. The old ‘no lion or tiger in the bushes for most people in 2022’ However, that being said - ‘modern threats’ aren’t necessarily gone - just more abstract, complex, or even veiled - our brains are still set up to alert us to ‘simpler’ things like the beast in the bushes. We read this as anxiety.

I like that this video touched on the idea that getting older comes with a more positive outlook on life. People generally equate age with wisdom and I can agree with that. I want to highlight that point by saying that the older you are in life, the more experiences you come across and that leads you to understanding different ways to cope with bad news.. you start to see that it isn't the end of the world everytime something bad happens because good things happen too. To switch more to positive thinking I try to focus on the good things that happened when I have a really bad day. No matter how small the good thing is, being able to recognize it on a day that everything seemed to be bad helps me find a little balance. So to put it simply.. there may always be a good thing to come out of a bad thing and vise versa. I think learning how to process your emotions is definitely a positive step towards gaining a healthy level of maturity 💓

There are only two elements to understand positivity and negativity within yourself. First off, understand your DNA. Your tendencies could be within the strand. Look at your parents and their parents, including aunts and uncles for clues. Observe but also ask questions like a detective. You don't have to tell them why you're asking. Secondly, your parents and siblings determine a lot of how you think positively or not. Ask yourself, "Was my home life filled with positive words, like ever, did you ever hear positive words about what you've done, or was it filled with neutral or negative thoughts?" You will be surprised when you think back at how little you at the very least perceive your family providing positive words in your childhood. Parents fundamentally have kids so they have someone they can instill their fears into. It takes thought. Think about it.

Why look for negative affirmations, & excuses to be negative? DNA does not decide happiness, knowing & understanding that Love is a choice. There is always something to be grateful for. Changing are perception of how we perceive things is powerful, if we all started looking for the good in everyone & everything it would change the world. Love is the answer I know that sounds corny, but it is the answer to every negative ."Love cancels out every bad behavior. And we all need Love.

I don't even know what it means and why so much emphasis is put on that saying. For me, the situation determines if I view it as half full or half empty. If you bring me or someone a glass of water, of course I'd think it's half full, whereas if I see a random glass of water laying in your house, I'd think it's half empty because it's the assumption that it's bring used.

Dance to your favourite music like nobody’s watching. Meditate in nature and think about all the good times I’ve had with people, focus on what makes people so beautiful and unique, think about how lucky we are to be alive, breathing, thinking enjoying. Think about how there are other people in worser conditions than us. Be grateful that we can do the things we can do. Always have the courage to figure out how to overcome an obstacle instead of ignoring it. Challenge your brain to think and get strong. Make positive habits and overtime your mind gradually shifts into a positive state and it’s easier to live. Everything runs smoother, more opportunities open up and people become more attracted to you. You can do it ! ❤️

It's not that we're looking for Negative things, it's that we are programmed with a need to survive. Discovering things that can harm us and then remembering those things is a survival instinct. At some point in the future humans will realize that the natural environment can no longer kill you nearly as easily as it did a few hundred years ago. And then theoretically it will be easier to be more optimistic about things. The one problem we have however is that humans prey upon each other. Not cannabalistically but rather monetarily and emotionally. Greed, Envy, Jealousy, and all the other negative emotions tempt us to prey upon our fellow humans. The golden rule should be emphasized by all of us.

Your brain is wired for negative thoughts, it's true, But fear not, for there's a path anew. Here's how to change it, to rewrite the script, And let positivity's light be equipped. First, recognize the patterns, the loops in your mind, Where negativity thrives, unconfined. Acknowledge its presence, without judgment or shame, And gently redirect, towards a brighter flame. Second, cultivate compassion, both for yourself and all, Let kindness be the beacon, in life's grand hall. For in lifting others, you lift yourself high, And break through the clouds, in the vast sky. Third, practice gratitude, in every day, For the blessings that come, in each gentle sway. Focus on the good, let it fill your soul, And watch as negativity loses its hold. So let us embark on this journey of change, From the shadows of doubt, to the light so strange. For in rewiring our brains, we find the key, To unlock the door, and set ourselves free.

And why wouldn't people be rational, objective about things? What are the odds I come across a predator? And how can I make sure I'll be able to handle this situation. It's all intelligence, neurologic connections especially to the right side of the brain. Being social and creative creates perspective and trust that you'll be oke whatever. + rational objective thinking ;) which seems to be very rare, is also a nice tool to have and gives all reasons to be positive.

I would argue that there's a difference between thinking rationally and thinking negatively, and that it's dangerous to conflate the two. I think that if one is really thinking rationally, they would find that a positive outcome is just as achievable as a negative outcome, and they would focus attention on doing what's necessary to ensure that positive outcome. Being realistic isn't just about seeing potential negative consequences and mitigating them. It's about seeing potential positive outcomes and taking advantage of them as well.
