In the automotive industry your coworkers want you fail. they have everything to gain from it and nothing to lose. maybe everywhere is like that. but it's noticeably bad in this industry.

Ha haaa ha, we used to always say, when a new guy comes in, NOBODY helps him unload his box, but when he leaves, EVERYBODY helps him load up his box. But honestly, there were groups here and there that would help each other oyt, not all of them were cut throats.

I’m not proud of it, but there was a time when I was much more standoffish and unwilling to help in order to keep time. Eventually, when a single toxic tech left, a lot changed and I pulled a 180°. I figured if my work was good the money would follow. I started trying to help where I could and really support everyone making money. Found out, when you help others be better, they return that back to you and it made me a better tech and person.

This is every job ever. It's just human nature unfortunately. Every job I have ever had has always been COVER YOUR ASS. No one wants to take the blame for anything, so throwing you under the bus is only natural. I would imagine this is especially tough for mechanics because there is SO much outside of your control. You deal with hundreds of different cars, all with different parts, all of which are not in your control. You have to deal with tools that can break which isn't necessarily in your control. The car you are working on could have all sorts of weird problems depending on how the customer took care of it. You could have issues with the shop and they conduct business which isn't in your control. So all of these things can lead to situations not in your control and mistakes happen. I imagine being a mechanic is pretty stressful.

I worked hourly heavy fleet and I still filmed and took pictures of absolutely everything. If its in the shop getting parts put on it it isn't out making money so calling parts early or chasing your tail on a diagnostic issues is seen as wasting everyone's space, time, and money. It was common for management to wonder if you changed something too early/making busy work, or you sent it because you are lazy or couldn't figure it out. Pics saved me so many times, I cant even imagine the shite talking that went on that I didn't hear about. They would always wait a bit and maybe a few days, a week, and then question the repair once the old parts and rig were long gone. If I didn't have the pics I would probably struggle to remember the details, being the one working through and solving these complex problems one after another, as opposed to delegating and critiquing. The other techs still hold back info, especially the older folks, mostly because they don't want you to get too quick and make them look bad or take credit for there info ...So they will mislead or underlead, as you mentioned to make themselves look better to management. On the flip side some young guys will take your advice but then get cocky and try and act like they had it figured out already/blame there tools/etc. My advice to apprentices is be humble and thankful to those who truly help you out, be weary of management and any techs that kiss management ass, always protect your health and work reasonably safe. Anyone who has the attitude of "well you shouldn't have become a mechanic if you didn't want to absolutely ruin your body" is an idiot. You get good before you get fast, take as long as necessary on any job the first time you do it. The second time is where you can try and be fast.

@alwaysgoodinthewoods
@alwaysgoodinthewoods 28 күн бұрын
@@Lancemechanics Don't get me wrong there are good guys on the floor, thankfully, that will tell it to you straight early on and management wouldn't call you on stuff daily.. but weekly for sure, best to just take the pics daily so you are covered...the repairs they did question you on you would laugh and scratch your head. Recent example: Brand new cube van customer cant fill fuel. I go and check it out. Have a look in the fuel filler and its completely blocked up with petroleum jelly looking stuff, I fish out what I can with a long screw driver and fill it up.... all fixed! (all that expensive tooling and schooling really shining here lol). My job is done right? nope. Now I have to put on my detective hat... My best guess is when they put the box on the truck body they have to put the extended fuel filler on and that was there choice of lube to fit the extension and they went a little heavy. That was the first time it had ever been filled with fuel since I suppose? I cant assume this though and can only state the facts, take my pics and head back to the shop, now management is quizzing me on the ole who's to blame and who's paying dance. Is it a customer bill back? (the favorite) Is it warranty at ford?(please no, and you better be right) Do they need to go after the van body company? (good luck) am I absolutely sure of what I saw? was it sabotage? driver just not wanting to drive that day and made it up for whatever reason? (strangely common), trying to explain this situation to someone who has 0 mechanical knowledge is tough. Not my problem though, I observed an obstruction, removed it, verified operation, here are the pictures of said obstruction, next job please! lol Its not always your work personally that is being questioned but the details that will drive you absolutely mad and taking pics and videos made it a lot easier to turn off at the end of the day and relax. Its never the actual work that is the pain, its the people and the politics.

It is a very toxic environment, but what i experienced, differs from what you did. People that got done wrong by management tended to stick together. We defended each other, helped each other out, and were honest with one another. On the flip side, those guys who were in good with management stuck together too. I did have techs handing wrong info to send you on wild goose chases, techs and even advisors trying to throw me under the bus....well even foremans and managers for that matter. They didnt like me. Kind hard to like the guy "you cant touch", lol. They could never make anything stick on me no matter how much mud they flung at me. Anyways, i did develope friendships that went beyond the shop (and some of them were old timers, but not all), but that was just my experience.

I worked my career in a dealership. You have advisors that will favor their friends over anyone. Everyone knows it is happening. Even a lot of times at dealerships when a manger leaves a new one will come and later hire his buddy as an advisor and that advisor will bring his own guys. There are now mostly electronic dispatching but that can easily be manipulated. You can go on the computer and see others times for the day and week. And you will learn fast and hard who the favorite ones are.

When i was a young tech just out of school i was working in a dealership that will remain nameless. There were 4 of us new guys. We actually had to share 2 bays they were technically 4 as these 2 bays were over the pits. The other techs got together and made a board posting a bonus for the technician that had the highest basic service tickets from service plans included in purchases of vehicles sold off the lot. The 4 of us went to war thunking the loss of time in the short term would be made up by the bonus. I personally worked nearly 100hrs of time at a loss trying to win. I made less than 25% of a normal paycheck for the month trying to get the bonus of $1000 for being the best and thought it would at the very least make an impact on my future at the dealership. It was all fake and management knew what they did and said nothing benefiting from the free labour. The person that “won” ended up in hospital from working themselves almost literally to death and barely eating in the aftermath of the scheme. I came in 3rd….

If you hear I went back to the dealership as a technician on flatrate, then you know I'm desperate and hit rock bottom 😡 Nah, I'm not going back. I would do yard work and cut firewood before going back to flatrate. Even if they sucker you in and give you a decent guarantee, if you don't earn that guarantee every week consistently, they will take it away. So it's like not having a guarantee at all. You go to the bank to get a loan they ask what you made in the past 3 years, and what you make right now. If you are honest, you don't know if you are going to make your tool payment next week. You don't know! A banker would have to be a fool to loan a mechanic money without collateral, like land or a house. They don't take tools or tool boxes as collateral. That stuff is worth pennies on the dollar.

I knew he was working hard and was a troubled veteran but I forgave him every time. He allowed his woman to trash talk me and slander my name for years. When I found out everything she did I confronted him.. why he didn't defend me and put a stop to it.. he turned it all back around me and defended her, made it out that I was the problem even though he did acknowledge right off the bat that he knew she was spreading lies about me. And at that, I could no longer give forgiveness. Her smear campaign damaged in ways that are nearly impossible to recover from but on the bright side a few people acknowledged the lies and did defend me when I wasn't there to do it myself. Take note men.. family will screw you over quicker than anyone else (because they think you'll forgive them faster than anyone else when they do) and my older brothers were in on some of that as well.. been done with them too.

This is all unfortunately true, many times you got a tech in the next bay working on let’s say a warranty heater core or evap core in a grand Cherokee, very very common. The longer they are on that job, the more chance you can pull a few more jobs. But!! If you are the doctor in the house, you may not wanna pull that next job blindfolded, it could be a warranty tranny in a 3500. Free diag and tranny teardown and pathetic pay.

There was one incident from a so called "honda dealer" that installed a ball joint. We inspected the vehicle and told the vehicle owner that the balljoint nut is incorrect, bring it back to the dealer for warranty. What are the chances the owner drove away and the suspension components later fell apart. We go and help the customer at the side of the road and reassemble the suspension so the owner can bring it back for warranty. The customer later asks us to inspect the second replacement and what do we find? the same incorrect nut. We took the time to source the correct nut and that's the aha moment for the customer. This customer will never purchase a honda ever again. There are lots of stories that pertain to that so called "honda dealer" and people learn who is right, wrong and dishonest. Unfortunately, that dealer represents more than one manufacturer in the city. So how and who do you trust? Cameras and video is crucial. "Flat rate breeds contempt" and keeping a recording device is the only option left with "hand written and copied work orders". We all know why the Bavarian Manure Wagon dealership closed.

Saddly this is 95% of the shops out there. I was at one shop where they would literally " play pranks " but it was nothing short of vandalism and harassment. Funny thing is once they found out what I do for my other job I was left alone. They were just more sneaky about it. Tell management I was smoking in the shop while working on fuel systems , I don't smoke and if I did I'm not retarded. Or say I sleeping in cars or driving recklessly on test drives. But since I knew they didn't want a face to face altercation I would bust my ass to get my jobs done just so I can take jobs off of their boards. For about 3 months I was the weekly leader in efficency. My best week I was 224%. Which made them lose their minds. I am glad I am out of that field now I just have to deal with getting shot at a few times a year hahaahah

This isn’t exclusive to automotive, it’s the fundamental flaw of being an employee vs being self employed. There’s never enough room at the top. Employers want you to earn just enough to get by, but not enough to become an independent competitor . Coworkers want you to fail, because someone has to do the dirty work. So unless you work for yourself, putting in the extra effort just fattens the pockets of those above you. Come in early, stay late, sacrifice your existence , and one day your kids can work for their kids.

Kinda related I tried to bring this up when I was looking at histories why things were being sold when it's not even close to due example I had a 19 odyssey with 70k that had 3 timing belt jobs done already by others there I showed the bosses an they just swept it under the rug it's to cut throat to survive

Hourly apprentice at a mom and pop shop here, the master mechanic in my shop has been wrenching for 45 years and is always quick to help me out or give me advice. My 3d day in the shop he gave me a cornwell powered box, torque stick set, and a snapon screwdriver set. He aint like what youre describing at all.

but i been thinkin on going to college and taking a budle of classes to get certified but you got me thinkin cuz i remember working at the marriott hotel and i use to make 200 bucks a day in tips in 1995 so thats proof the customers liked me but the cook and his girlfriend-a waitrees there- did not like me, her cuz i cut into her pie and him i tried to satisfy the customers by add ons and sauces and such and if i got something wrong i'd give them a free ice cream or somethin, and of course the mngr did not like that, so long story short they had a group meeting and asked me to join and the mngr asked me to name everything on the menu and all the ingrediants and i probably could have but i just said no, so she promotes the cook on the spot he takes me over to the bar and fires me, then on my way out i see the little blonde waitress, his girlfriend, talking to the mngr. so i waived good bye and said thanks and the cook/mngr said its nothing personal and i thought for me it is

Still young thinking about walking away, too much backstabbing, lies, if you're skill with great working attitude, knowledgeable, efficient,and honest with the customers the only reward is to working harder while the cry babies get whatever they wanted. Your videos are not accurate. It all depends on where you work, who you work with and the type of technician you are. In my environment, a corporate owned LEXUS store, nobody wants any of the technicians to fail. We actually strive on working together as a team, we are all individual flat rate technicians, however we are definitely a team. I can guarantee you, if a new technician joins us, they feel welcomed right away. It not only builds confidence in the new individual but questions flow freely and answers are quick and accurate. I feel bad for techs who feel the way you do. It’s not a good place to be. There are great places to work as a professional technician, you just need to find one.
@Lancemechanics
@Lancemechanics 28 күн бұрын
100% not every place is the same. There are good places. But to say not accurate is perspective. The vast majority of techs have been through all this. It's never talked about. U till it is how can we fix the other places? Why is there a mechanics shortage? Why do wages suck. There will always be the exception to the rule as is your case

Based on some of your videos, it sounds like you've worked in some really shitty shops and because of that you are burnt out, understandbly so. But when you make these negative videos it doesnt benefit the industry or any young guys coming into it. All of us on watching this video and commenting, we have the power to try and shape our environment. Be the change you want to see

I will direct a 100 brilliance minds to truck and coach, heavy duty, electrician, plumbing, carpentry all other trades before i let them get into automotive. All the others will too. its bad when trades schools teachers are preaching it too. Negatives have to be talked about
@COBRO98
@COBRO98 23 күн бұрын
That's because you don't yet realize that young men shouldn't be going into it.. after 20 years, when I can think of a positive I will let you know; it's most likely the worst trade you can get into and you'll be paid half of any other trade while expected to be a jack-of-all-trades. It's the only trade where you're expected to self-purchase not only your own tools but SIX FIGURES worth and it never stops. 85% of the money earned goes into your boss's pocket. Leave now and do something else
