I watched that movie when it came out and didn't get it either. Of course, I'd read the book at least twice by then and I didn't get where the other 2/3rds of it went or why they added some stupid bits. Otherwise, the movie *looked* great--except for the over-the-top Harkonnen..

@@TmRnBn My dad is not a big sci-fi guy. He saw Dune in the theater with my uncle, then bought the movie cover Dune paperback. He would generally go see movies before letting us kids see them; I was 11 and wasn’t allowed to go see this (plus dad didn’t like it lol). Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom came out that same year, alas, I was not allowed to see that one either. Too much human sacrifice I imagine. I read Dune several years later and loved it. Dad told me the book was difficult and I think I did try it at 11, but I didn’t get very far at that time.

And the original Dune if they're nerdy; - The belief that Hollywood went to trash, especially thanks to culture wars; - Right-wing views (41% Biden, 57% Trump on exit polls); - They still get hyped for the Hollywood stuff even though they b*tch about it.

Reading Dune (long ago) with friends, we would key into different details or fill in details where Herbert hadn't. Film makers are similar and I look forward to seeing what is important to each. Lynch's version totally brought to life things I'd glossed over so that I had to re-read the book to make sure he wasn't making it up (he wasn't). I also couldn’t find stuff that I thought I remembered being there because that stuff came from hours of our imaginations filling out the Dune world.

This video made me miss my dad. He had the whole series from when he was a boy. Huge fan. He could make pretty dismissive comments about modern adaptations as well. He certainly did when certain production details were released. I know this vid was about flexing on the boomers but it’s stuff like this you’ll look back on with great affection one day. I wish he could have seen the most recent Dune movie. He probably would have insisted we all go together and had a lot to say about it.

Although, since I do most of my reading on his old hand-me-down Kindle, most of my recommendations/screensavers are historical romances, so I have to go online to find actual recommendations that are useful to me.

this made me laugh, I read Dune as a teen at the same time as the 80s movie release, i just brought the book again to reread, only I found I could no longer read it as the print was to small and had to download it on kindle....Oh and I like the 80s version movie but really looking forward to the new one :)

And what about Grandpa who read Dune in 1965, following the original articles "Dune World" and "The Prophet of Dune" which it was based both published in Analog in 1963 and 1965 respectively. Then Dune Messiah and Children of Dune both published later in 1969 and 1976 respectively. Dune won the first Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1966.

David Lynch's Dune has grown on me, but the first time I saw it in the theater it was pretty awful. What was with all the whispered internal dialogue? And bucket loads of gore, cheesy special effects. But it had some cool moments too, like the sand worms & the Guild Navigators. Plus the Toto music!
