Def gauge works off of sonar. The sensor itself is about halfway up the DEF tank so it will not move from full until it gets down to about 1/2 a tank. Best way to think about the level is as soon as it starts to come off full you have about a 1/2 a tank at that point the gauge is relatively close to telling you how mush is left of the 1/2 a tank. I originally thought my truck was using DEF too fast until I found out how the gauge worked. There are some videos out there explaining the was the gauge works. I believe Motor City Mechanic did one with a cutaway of the tank.

So my gauge is stuck on 1/4 level, just above the red zone. I have a full tank of DEF. How do you fix the gauge?
@benc.74463 жыл бұрын
@@aharleyguy unfortunately there is not one easy fix. If it is full and the needle did not move it is likely m issue with the sensor itself in the tank. Not sure if you have seen or heard of the Alpha OBD app but if you have an android device or a laptop PC you can purchase the app and it gives you a ton of ability to diagnose and even upgrade your truck. It is very close to what the dealership has to work on your truck. One of the sections on the app is specifically on the DEF system. That may get you what you need to diagnose and possibly repair on your own but ultimately it sounds like you may need to replace a part.

I have a 2017 dually which shows DEF level gauges the same way as noted in your video, had it for 44,000 miles. Recently I took the DEF down to where the needle was almost on zero then added 2.5 gallons, this located the gauge between 1/2 and 3/4 then I drove 1000 miles. End of that run put the needle in the red. I'm pulling 17,600 pounds. Don't know if everyone knows this but DEF at the pump is under $3.00 a gallon, on my last trip to NC I noticed a Circle K had a DEF pump. I usually buy DEF at truck stops and was glad to see this.Thanks Marion for your excellent videos, very much appreciated.

With my Ram, I found that I hardly use any DEF at all until I'm towing. I can go 6+ months without having to add any DEF during the winter when I'm not towing. During the summer, I'll add a gallon when it hits 50% empty and it barely hits 100% full. Not really a problem.

Proud owner of a 2015 Ram 2500 Cummins. I use to wait until the def gauge dropped to about a 1/4 or less. After 20k miles I got the infamous “service def soon ... 150 miles to limp mode” .. CRAP.! My dealer discovered the def pump was damaged and replacement was necessary. The tech, who I have a great relationship with told me to try to keep the def tank as full as possible because when the level gets lower the urea salts will come out of solution when air is in the empty tank area .. freeboard area. Damn sure makes sense! Anyway, we are fortunate in our area to be able to get def at a pump. I’m with Marion, don’t rely on the gauge. Keep that tank full and save that pump!

Yea, I came to that exact conclusion when I filled up the DEF tank at a fueling station pump. I was surprised how much it took and how long it took for the guage to start registering usage. Later on I found out that you do not want to use DEF pumps at stations and top it off to 5 gallons during the Texas summer because the DEF fluid becomes less effective when it sits in the heat. So during the summer time I ONLY put in 2 1/2 gallons a time using the boxes of DEF at Wally World.

@jameskelson18914 жыл бұрын
There is nothing wrong with your gauge except for the way it was designed. For reasons only known to Ram the gauge sender mechanism only covers the bottom half of the tank. That does mean it takes 3000 or so miles for a full tank to drop to the point where the gauge starts to read below 100%. It also means that when the tank reads under 50%, there is actually only a gallon or so of DEF remaining!
@gunfreak5654 жыл бұрын
It’s the gauge! It doesn’t start reading till about 60% capacity. The tank is deeper than the heater/pump/gauge assembly. It doesn’t use a float like typical in a fuel tank we are use to. Great video once again Marion! I needed this one. I poured in 2.5 gallons of DEF when it was somewhere between one-half and one-quarter of a tank on the gauge. The needle went all the way to full and hasn't come off since. Not sure of the miles, but I've filled the tank full of diesel at least 4 times since (topping it off a few times) and I'm thinking this gauge is stuck. I don't use the truck very much unless towing the RV or like last weekend when we took it on a lengthy trip to the mountains - about 265 miles one way and that's not counting the running around mileage. I'm thinking of draining the DEF like you did just to find out if this gauge is stuck. Man does this thing P_ss me off! As always, thanks! Russell

Correct, the fluid will freeze when the truck is not running. The expansion would break the tank if it did not have extra room. Every DEF required diesel I own will pump the fluid back into the tank after you shut them off. If that fluid stays in the lines going to the SCR then it would also freeze. It is not recommended to fill the fill hose all the way up for this exact reason.

Any other way it just choked on its way down and some spilled out. 3) Can you make a video on how far you can go on E maybe based on just using your probe and fuse 70 to drain whatever you can at E? I’ve heard in the tank there is basically a bucket of 2-3 gallons the fuel gauge cant read that keeps the fuel lift pump from sucking air and overheating so should be almost impossible to run too low...only out of fuel

I have a 2019 5th Gen Ram Cummins and I just use the truck stop DEF pump it’s a little bit more convenient than the jugs but mine I just lock the handle until it fills up and kicks off like a fuel pump normally does and mine will creep back up to 100% and stay there for a little bit but not long towing it uses it faster but I always put more in when I get to the 2/8th mark or 1/4 tank mark and I’ve never had any issues running out I never let it go in the red which is the under quarter section of the gauge but it won’t matter long soon my guard will say full and stay they’re infinitely as I’m planning on deleting the emissions entirely off it to prolong the engine life and avoid emission control equipment failures and costly repairs because we all know it’ll wait til the warranty runs out before going caput anyhow and they avoid warranty work that way so open the exhaust up let it breathe and run as it’s intended and enjoy the power boost and fuel efficiency boost and long healthy reliable engine life

I know you are only stating what your manual says, but I personally don't look at the gauge when adding DEF or fuel, I'm always at the fill port and not inside my vehicle with the key on. This entire system seems flawed to me. Urea is quite corrosive, and it seems like nonsense to add concentrated synthetic piss to my exhaust. Now I have to create trash with all of the 2.5 gallon jugs I am forced to buy since there are so few DEF filling stations. When I look at the big picture, I wonder what puts more contaminates into the environment; burning diesel without DEF or making the 2.5 gal plastic DEF containers and littering our lands and oceans with more plastic? My guess is that in the long run DEF is worse for our environment because of the all the litter. It would be interesting to see an EPA report on the containers.

Watch were you buy your DEF. Bulk tank at Truck stop will be the fresh stuff, simply bc the big trucks are using a lot of it. Buying a 2.5 gal jug at Johnny-Bobs car parts is not a good idea. That stuff may have been sitting around for a couple of years. And yes that hump in the tank is to allow for freezing ( expansion ) in cold temps. DEF turns to slush at 11 degrees ( above 0 ). Your engine then heats it back to liquid during the first hour of operation when the system is not dosing. It never freezes solid.

The mileage for DEF is about 2000-2500 mi before it comes off full. There is an ultrasonic sender inside the tank. It does not go to the top of the tank and only senses by ultrasonic waves when the DEF is at or below the the sensor. It is about 1 1/2-2 gal of fluid. You will be warned when it gets low, you will have at least 300 mi, maybe 450 mi before any action is taken by the computer to derate the engine. That is working perfectly. At the 1/2 mark on the gauge, you can add 2.5 gal and be OK for cold (freezing) weather. It is just fine, you are way over thinking this.

At some point there maybe a simpler solution to clean up your truck.... if you know what i mean.... less items to give you fits and less items to break... just a thought.

Really. Has no idea what he is talking about. Not being derogatory or disrespectful but the issue is not with the fluid. Let me explain. As def drops over a period of time, and we do not maintain the level, def crystallizes and turns hard. So when you try to fill it back up, the sensor reading will be inaccurate. This is when you test or drain, this will explain the volume difference. The fix is to remove the float, should be a long tube , and put in warm water, this will clean the the tube and should give a better reading. This is the system that it is in most commercial trucks. Now that's a new one and there is no float in this system. It's sonar. You need to do a little more research on DEF. But thanks for watching

Hi there. Quick question, what monitoring device are you using to monitor the various sensors on your truck such as EGT?

I’m having problems with my fuel gauge not getting to half on the gauge when I fill it up. I only have 9000 miles on my 2019 2500. Any ideas?? Thanks. 👍✌️

I'm hearing that a lot. The problem with an older truck was the fuel tank unit..

I bet you think there's an actual sending unit + float like is in a fuel tank. Nope. Do some research and you'll understand why the gauge is just a calculated guess vs actual reading. It's not a big deal.

The problem with your "DEF" gauge is that it still has power going to it.
