It absolutely helps! I have been diagnosed with severe chronic depression, and have recently been eating less and less. A close friend noticed (she's amazing) and asks me every night if I had dinner already, she doesn't push me but knowing someone cares for me that way gets me to make dinner just for her sake. It's not a solution and therapy helps me to want that for my own sake as well but without her I'd be severely under weight by now

I was homeless for 11 days last month so I was staying at a shelter. They kicked me out of bed at 6am, breakfast was at 7, lunch at 12, dinner at 6 and plain sandwiches if you need a snack. I've never felt so healthy. I've been trying to get into an eating disorder program for 2 months now because I was starving and ill in the head... but I've been focusing on eating more often and walking long distance every day for blood circulation and to make me hungry. I feel better than I have for a long time.

In relation to the confounding factors - Some (maybe many) people know what to eat, but can't afford healthier food - certainly not as a staple. Healthier food also tends to not be shelf stable, meaning you have to go to the store more often, which adds other expenses as well as physical strains on some disabled folks. Poor folks can't afford to buy more expensive healthier food only to have it go bad, so buying cheaper shelf-stable stuff - or at least stuff that's frozen and will keep until they can get around to it - is what doesn't throw their money in the trash. Food pantries also provide...the calories made available to them, which are a lot of carbs and canned goods of various sorts, and they have no control over what they get, so can't improve the nutrition of what they give. They also need mostly shelf-stable supplies, or food would go bad before it even got handed out.
@elektrikhd
@elektrikhd 5 жыл бұрын
YES! This is such a big thing. I've definitely been there myself, or even on that borderline and not wanting to take a chance on a better but more expensive food item, because if I hate it (or can't eat it because of dietary restrictions), that's a lot more money going to waste.

Careful with coffee. It blocks absorption of essential minerals you need against depression. After one coffee, I also feel miserable with nausea, which fuels my depression. Because when I feel sick, I will isolate, not feel like working,.. some foods have ruined my life this way. Worst is cow dairy, coffee, alcohol, sugar, white flour products, honey, tea, candy, cookies,fried foods, chips, chicken. I'm having arugula with tomatoes, almonds, olive oil right now. Tonight I'm making walnut pesto with whole grain pasta. It doesn't have to be hard

Yeah I dunno about this one. Typically people eat worse because they’re depressed, not the other way around. And while eating better could go some way to help that, I’m also pretty certain that, like you said, not having to worry about grocery bills, having some extra money in your pocket, and/or actually having people care about your wellbeing (even if only for the sake of a study) are much more effective at alleviating depressive symptoms

sure! they didn't claim diet is the cause of major factor, tho. Just trying to see if some improvements can be made. I totally just microwave a sweet potato and eat it in bed when I'm depressed. For me I survived on boiled eggs, pre washed/cut spinach, microwave oatmeal, canned beans, bananas, avocado, sweet potato, rice and whatever I batched cooked in a slow cooker and froze on my less shit days. It's tough. Also throwing whatever is in my fridge into a pot and making it into a soup/stew, kept the house warmer too since I was always cold.
@AlthenaLuna

@@TomatoBreadOrgasm Fun is irrelevant. If I don't have the mental or physical energy to cook, it's not gonna happen. Even stews take prep work that's exhausting-to-painful (for me), so that threshold of "too much" effort varies widely based on a lot of factors.

Agree, when I’m in a bad state instant noodles can be hard enough. Liked some of the commenter above’s healthy food suggestions though. I’ve definitely survived on microwave oats, overnight oats etc. before. I now keep frozen veg, microwave brown rice and tins of tuna on hand just in case. Even if the diet correlation is true, the cause and effect is kinda murky. I feel better when I’m eating well, but when I start going down, my diet tends to suffer - are the diet changes making it worse or is my depression resulting in a poorer diet? Also, even if I am eating healthy (when I have help) it doesn’t magically make my depression better. All anicdotal, I know, but worth thinking about.

We know from experiments on prisoners that things like niacin can impact mental health. So we know that, at least in some cases, diet can effect mental health. We also know that some vitiman deficiencies can lead to depression (specifically a tryptophan deficiency), so I guess the question is under what specific conditions does diet impact mental health?

@@noxolosakang6547 You can get 5-hydroxitryptophan over the counter at most health good stores, but you're probably getting enough tryptophan in your diet. If you are living with depression, or know someone who is, I would recommend seeing a therapist and maybe going for a run regularly (cardio effectively treats "mild-to-moderate" depression). Also, make sure you're getting enough sleep. Too much or not enough sleep can also impact depression. I'm currently seeing a therapist for general anxiety disorder. There is no shame in seeing a therapist. If you live in a country where that isn't possible, there are online support groups where you can talk to people.

You can find the description of the diet in the PDF here: dro.deakin.edu.au/view/DU:30096024 starting around page 5. As someone who has spent a lot of time tuning their diet to avoid depression, I feel the most important features are that it's high fat, high fibre, includes leafy greens and mostly avoids simple carbs (white bread, noodles, rice, potatoes, sugar, etc.). This diet is a big step in the right direction, if you can stick to it. The only things I would change are: allow unlimited fish, eggs and poultry, because they're harmless as long as you don't already have a cholesterol problem and you keep up the other parts of the diet, and allow fruits to be substituted with vegetables, because most fruits are mostly sugar and hold almost no nutritional value.

I wonder if there's any link with the psychological effects of eating food that's perceived to be unhealthy. Many of us are familiar with the feeling of guilt we get from "giving in" to food cravings for foods high in fat and sugar. I wonder if that might make depressive symptoms worse. In which case, it's not a physiological effect of better nutrition, but a psychological effect of less guilt from eating "bad" food. The inclusion of spices also seems interesting, I expect some of the diets these people were on might have been quite monotonous, perhaps down to lack of motivation due to depression. I also wonder if a diet that has more diverse flavours could improve mood as well. It's going to be interesting to see if either of these have any influence along with a better intake of nutrients.

In other news, doing things that aim to make you feel better about yourself just might help you feel a little bit less bad about yourself. Nutrition and exercise are great and all, don't get me wrong - but some types of depressive states just shift to a new form when changing such things. Try finding what works for YOU. Since you can't double-blind the study, could you beat the placebo effect by varying explanation of the suggested outcome of the study. You're looking for change in mood, but tell half the participants you're trying verify that the new diet makes them feel worse, and the other half that you expect it to make them feel better. Then maybe you can separate the power of suggestion from the power of nutrition.

everything is mind body and soul . It’s all connected whether people want to believe it or not . If your mind is off everything else will follow suit . I believe starting with wanting to get better is the first step then diet and then everything else follows because to eat better you have to want to eat better . Ever wake up and feel tired of being tired ? Tired of being depressed or anxious ? At that moment you should follow your intuition and start trying to make changes . Positive ones . Eating well is one of them . The moment you are tired of being tired is the moment your soul is telling you it needs better . Better mindset (mind), better nutrients and healthy food (body) and that will make the soul eventually feel better . It’s all connected and if you are disconnected in one or the other I believe that is where depression starts to take over . Don’t ignore your intuition . Don’t keep binge watching tv even though your soul is telling it’s had enough . At that point turn off the tv go for a walk . Breathe in deeper . Listen to your body for what it’s asking you . Give it its nutrients ! If you ignore it that is how depression manifests . Remember you can do anything in your life ! Anythinggg you want to .
