Creating hallways like that with cutting tool creates n-gons. Use the cutting tool but press v to instead create loopcuts, this method will give you nice quads.

Hammer 5 handles those ngons perfectly well, there's not issue at all to do that, geo, materials and collisions will work just fine. It just gets triangulated automatically when compiling the map. But yes quads are still useful to paint and sculpt so it's a good practice to make a map, but for prototypes the cutting tool is very useful !

thanks for the tip. I was trying to make a hallway with c and after I extended hallway I couldn't make a hole for a door. is it possible to cut a n-gon surface?

I think a series you could do is a workflow showcase. Show people workflows for creating map specific things like exteriors, interiors, skyboxes, etc. Other than that these are incredibly helpful.

I don't understand the thing about walls needing to be "more than a few units thick," I haven't had any of the issues described. But it's worth mentioning specifically that backfaces don't stop light, so you need outer faces with blocklightsolid applied. This workflow is fine for beginners, but it's making a ton of n-gons. Other people suggest loop cuts, but that's not always the best solution either. Mapping has changed, it's not so casual anymore. Knowing 3D modeling software is the base of mapping now. It will let you make the props you need, but it also teaches you the skills to model Hammer meshes. It's somewhat hard (and boring) to just compile a list of all the tools and tricks. It's a large array of tools and different methods to do them. There's a learning curve for proper topology and working with quads & tris. Starting people on the basics of mapping and letting them learn is not a bad thing, but it's far more useful to try a bunch of Blender projects first instead of making a large map you spent tons of time on that needs to be re-made properly. It's also a weird time for CS2 specifically. In Hammer - water is broken, scripting is broken, some shaders are broken, smart props are completely undocumented and manual like old S1 QC files, there's no workshop... The tools are changing and documentation is scarce. Any new people wanting to start mapping - learn Blender first. It'll also help you understand materials and PBR.

i agree, the reason i keep the tutorials short and with the bare minimum you need to know is because i encourage people to go and mess about in the editor to figure things out. So for instance in this video i teach bare minimum and it'll be good for people who know nothing, and they can use this video to maybe experiment a bit in hammer themselves. But yeah, i very much think people should learn 3d modelling basics, even if its just in blender, it really helps with the cs2 workflow. Luckily we dont gotta worry about ngons as much because the new hammer editor triangulates faces anyways when compiling. Although yeah as you said, a lot of things in the editor are broken, i can see myself having to update a lot of tutorials when they eventually fix these, like my water video.

@@GoutrialI'm not dissing anything, I'm just saying for anyone looking at the comments that they should learn to model. There's definitely merit to messing around in Hammer and learning more later, but Source 1 was much more accommodating for that, and un-learning bad habits or changing your understanding of how something works is often more difficult than making yourself learn the complex way to start with. I'm just trying to put that idea out there, there's no wrong way to learn this stuff, but there is a best way, and there are wrong practices that can be a pain later.

could you do a match settings tutorial? such as buy time, amunt of players on each team, or gamemode? also is there a way to have those cameras at team select and mvp things at the end of games

if i have a custom vmat texture file and i want to compile everything in the vpk map file, can I do it? because when I copy the map vpk from the csgo_addon to maps folder in the game directory, the texture for example on the floor doesn't work and it shows red and black square. any help? Thanks

Do you know why when every I try to run my map, it builds correctly, but when it tries to run the map, it stalls and crashes?

im not sure, in my experience its been happening whenever i place a bombsite, haven't been able to find a fix for it either. I'll let you know if i find a fix for it

Update: I removed both bombsites, and just to be safe, the buyzones because I added them at the same time. It still does not work. I tried making a new map from the defusal template and removed both bombsites and buyzones and it continues to stall upon load.

@@spiderpig20Look at the console with "~" and see what errors you get. I'm not sure how/where the log files are dumped but you can search online for that. Also, asking how Valve did something that's broken in Hammer right now - several things are just broken right now. Hammer will be fixed, but it's jank ATM.
