I'm new to fiddle tunes, I started learning them on mandolin, switched to fiddle (my childhood instrument) and recently have been trying to flat pick my guitar from my mandolin/violin music. "Most" other "Whiskey" tutorials (and many others) play D tunes in Capo 2 using the C shape. So that's how I've been learning it. You're not using a capo and this tune seems to be about the same level of difficulty either way. My question is this, how do you know when to use a Capo? I've found through just trial and error some tunes are easier with a capo. Especially if they have high sections on the high E string.

Great question Joe! You’ve got a good handle on one reason I’ll use the capo over open position - if any of the sections require a lot of notes on the high E string, a capo might help. Not always the case, but a good rule (I use open position for St Anne’s Reel and it has a 7th fret B note on the high E). These days, I’ll usually try a piece of the tune in both positions and see which one I like the tone of best. I’m a sucker for droning open strings, so open position (or drop D) wins a lot of the time for me 🤠

@@HayesGriffin Thanks for your response Hayes! I enjoy your tutorials, they're very clear and easy to follow. My problem when using a capo, it hurts my brain looking at standard notation and trying to transpose. As I said I'm coming from fiddle so I have a lot of tunes in standard notation.

@@HayesGriffin I also love the fact that the lessons you choose to put on KZbin are complete, and not teasers for your course. I understand the need for monetization and your compensation, but these are very nice for us who may not be ready to make a commitment.

Hey question , this version is in key of D Norman plays alot of times in Eb if I capo first fret would that be the same as his Eb version ?
@HayesGriffin5 ай бұрын
Capo 1 with this version would indeed be Eb! You could also play capo 3 out of C position (I’m releasing the C position version soon 😊)

Hey :) I can alternate pick (sometimes even above 200bpm short phrases) and I have practiced some cross picking.. when you come from other genres to bluegrass what would you suggest as a learning path - which songs and in which order?
@HayesGriffin Жыл бұрын
Great question Igor! I started out as a rock guy and had a similar problem. For me, focusing on alternate picking technique, looking at transcriptions, and exploring improv tools like pentatonic scales and triads. Here are a few tunes (in no particular order) that served me well: Angeline the Baker Red Haired Boy Gold Rush Big Sciota Salt Creek Cherokee Shuffle Black Mountain Rag Billy in the Lowground If you need more, I’m happy to suggest.
