I make my gates with pvc (same dimensions as multigp standard 5x5ft) and I put pool noodle over it (fits perfectly over 3/4” diameter pvc) this is great for practice because it is almost impossible to break your quad on a pool noodle and it won’t shatter the pvc on a prop strike too. Also I choose bright orange pool noodle for great visibility.

My first drone race was inside a event building... I am an average pilot and I changed my rates prior to the event but never tested them. I was used to flying outdoors only and that combined with the adrenaline of the race caused me to fly into the roof on takeoff 😂. I did have a lot of fun though!!! Thanks so much for this video JB! I decided I’m going to try racing this season and couldn’t really find anything on the behind the scenes of racing and what to expect your first race and pointers for noobs like me. Sure there’s a bunch of quality pilots that show their racing footage and practice sessions (John E Fly, Captain Vanover, Justin Skinner to a name a few) and that’s a big help too for sure but this is the first video showing pretty much how the race runs both while your flying and in the pits. Definitely helped ease my nerves about competing in some of the local races in my area. Maybe when I go to IO this year I’ll do a video for rookies like me showing exactly what it’s like from check in to till the end of the event and everything in between. 🤔 Great stuff as always JB. Keep up the good work! 👍🏻

A day at a multigp drone race... yeah, its about 6-8 hours worth of waiting for nothing, because youll get your turn, and as soon as they say GO youll crash, or get rammed, and wont be able to fly, so your turn is over... if youre lucky youll get to try 3 maybe 4 times... then youll give up and go drive your rc car, which will piss some kid off, who'll go lie to his daddy whos also the chaptert leader, who will just come yell at you until you, and physically push you for telling him his kid is lying then youll decide to leave or hit him. then theyll blame you for whatever the fuck they decided and youll never return. or at least that was my experience with multigp I'll tell you to just go fly somewhere alone or with 2 or 3 good friends.

Fantastic Josh, that was awesome. Can't believe you actually WON, too. I got to race my first time last summer at Flight Fest in a "rookie race" so the atmosphere was a lot less stressful and I was STILL jittery as hell (we had teams and our team leader was Jeff(Vortex) and he's about the most chill human being you ever met - so that helped too). In any case, it was a just awesome, but I just love freestyle way more. Great tip about setting the rates to 300 or so, too, cuz I do occasionally mess with racing on the sim and find it almost impossible at 900. You are one lucky son-of-a-gun, Josh you get to do what you love and pay the bills doing it. I'm happy for you man. You deserve it.

Just had my first race @ good times California clash 2018. My advice as a new race pilot. Don't change your rates until you are used to them. Most first time racers are freestyle pilots first. Unless you are already used to flying race rates. Just stick with whats comfortable for you and fly what your used to. You'll do just fine.
@JoshuaBardwell6 жыл бұрын
I agree. Don't make changes the day of the race. But if you have the time to practice with slower rates, it's very helpful. You have so much better control in corners with slower rates.

The day before the race my main racing quad broke. I was going to use my backup quad. I flew for about an hour before getting to the race. I flew several times before the race/practice began. Some guy brought his dog to the park off leash and chased my quad. I crashed and (I didn't know it at the time) ripped my mmcx connector off the board. I put my quad on the Mat and had very poor reception. After alot of trial and error I gave up and resorted to my 3" quad. Moral of the story bring all the quads you got. I'm just glad I didn't have to resort to my BetaFPV 75x.
@danlatu2096 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisBrownKnoxville When I have no spotter and I can always hear all things around me. I will fly around to see who and what is approaching or around. In the case of a dog off leash. I will lead the dog away from me with quad (across field) and wait till dog is a good 100+' away and shoot the quad back to me, land and disarm. That way i do not risk landing in the dogs mouth with props spinning. If there is a dog/kids on the track, we tell everyone to stop flying and disarm. Better safe than sorry. With the experience I have gained from breaking things, I have greatly reduced failure to just props, broken arms. My quads break the pvc gates before they themselves break. It is rare that I have any other failures.

Me and my son compete around the south east in ⅛ scale 4wd buggies. It's very important for us to rebuild diffs, shocks, and clean tires and buggy, lubricate every moving part, and replace any bearings that are worn. I usually replace all the bearings. So my question is : What are the general maintenance tips that help have a great flying quad? And / or any tips and tricks on the maintenance side that help insure your quad will last the entire day? (If you don't wreck and break stuff of course) Thanks
@JoshuaBardwell6 жыл бұрын
There are a ton of build tips to help prevent damage but quads don't really have preventive maintenance like lubing bushings or rebuilding diffs. Mainly, maintenance involves fixing whatever broke. Cleaning off the camera lens. The motors have bearings, but typically the motor gets destroyed before the bearing wears out, or it's too much of a hassle to replace the bearings and the motor is simply replaced. The biggest thing that degrades on a quad in my opinion is the motors. They get out of shape and have increased vibration which affects flight. Most other things are electronics that work perfectly right up until the day they explode.
@TheKrisBunch6 жыл бұрын
When I race, or fly somewhere where retrieving the quad will be hard (over water) I tear my quad apart the night before checking all screws and connections. Double check solder joints, antenna connections. Etc.

Very educational. This looks like the equivalent of a neighborhood football game... very friendly. Nothing like a "Professional" football game. In bigger races (more prestige and bigger prizes) is there security? Do you have field security (a spotter) in case a kid runs out onto the field? Do you rope off the pilots and spotters and put security behind them to prevent getting distracted or touched (wink wink asked in reference to a video with the comments turned off)? Perhaps this fledgling sport has grown to the point where it is time to arrange security like they do for other big sporting events.

@JoshuaBardwell6 жыл бұрын
Depends on the race. Some will limit to 5". More informal races typically won't care. How many packs to bring... you typically have dead time between heats so probably if you were to bring four packs and a charger you could keep yourself going. But obviously you would be better off to have enough packs to not have to charge in the field if you could avoid it, just so you can focus on other things.

@@JoshuaBardwell ok, I have never done any racing but I try to fly around the course they have at my field sometimes when no one else is flying. I have made it around the course a couple times but i usually crash.I cant do the corkscrew at all.

That's a good idea but I don't know any.

Great video Joshua, thank you. Here is another idea for racetrack design ideas, you could also check some of the real Formula 1 racetrack designs ;-)

How do you see who's the winner in a tight finish?
@JoshuaBardwell6 жыл бұрын
We use the ImmersionRC Lap RF timing system. If you don't have that then the spotter will indicate when their pilot finishes. Sometimes you'll have someone watching the finish line.

Lcheck for multigp chapters near you. If there isn't one, start one for the next person to look.

@joshua I have issues trying to get my HAM license. The guys around here don’t want fpv people to have a ham license or allow us to test. Are there other legal means to obtain one?
@JoshuaBardwell6 жыл бұрын
This is ridiculous. Anyone can take the test and they are obligated to administer it. Unfortunately, taking the test in person at an authorized testing center is the only way to get one.
@bansheerider6196 жыл бұрын
As Josh said they are required to administer the test. They should be happy that you are willing to get licensed, as many pilots do not. You can complain to the ARRL...www.arrl.org
