I think a rule about committing the French Guard is worth considering. Maybe something like only after the first infantry brigade breaks, can you commit them. Until then they stand on the start line - or something like that.

The Old Guard grenadiers were larger men than the Chasseurs so perhaps they get a +1 for hand to hand while the chasseurs get a plus one for shooting? Guards are lovely units regardless of nationality or history, they all look smashing imho. Have a good summer Tim and we'll be anxiously anticipating that Raevsky video.

Yeah, it's a great looking uniform. For a slightly different one, the Prussian adopted the kiwer in 1816 and this looks cool with their super dark blue uniforms

Re: guard units in other games. In soldiers of Napoleon all guard units and most cavalry heavier than dragoons are out into their own reserve brigades. Reserve brigades have to start off the board and arrive during the game. Also guard units have a greater impact on the army's break point when defeated.

General d’Armee have four troop gradings: Elite, Veteran, Line and Recruit. Different guard units can be found in all grades except recruits. For instance the old and middle guard as well as 1st and 2nd british guard regiments are considered elite but the best Young guard and british 3rd guard are considered Veteran, as well as crack line and light regiments. French Young guard post 1812 are normally considered to be of Line grading. Line quality is +~0 (standard with no modifiers related to the grading). Veteran and Elite units have better moral/discipline and manouver quicker. Elite battalions get extra skirmishers, more fire power, more melee damage. To differentiate between Young guard and ordinary line troops they can be of grenadier quality. This means that they are veterans when rolling for discipline but line i all other aspects. This can also be applied to better line regiments and guard units of lesser quality from other nations. The rules are not as nation specific as Black powder. The rules are intended for division-corps-size games. In the scenarios 12-16 battalions per side with supporting cavalry and artillery are normally fielded. For me I think it is reasonable rules and it is pretty much up to the players to agree upon grading, if not stated in the scenarios.

The BP rules should have Guards in their own Brigades as well . Not as Ive seen mixed with line infantry. Makes Brigade breaking interesting. I got the "Black Hussars Saxons" the other year but have sat in my parts containers for a while. Really good sculpts and compatible size. Mark from Chasseur blogs had me inspired . I don’t know how minis Roman games work, but SPQR by GMT prohibits you from using Triarii undoctrinally unless you are commanded by Scipio. Now in Civil War games, if you want to use your best troops first that’s your call.

Scots guards shame they don't get the highlander rules as well, the Russian gaurds were very tough equal in many ways to the French old gaurds.

I actually play Empire III and guard are often Guard class, then moving downward Grenadier, Elite, Crack, Veteran, Conscript and a few lower. Cavalry has a ACE rating
@sirrathersplendid482511 ай бұрын
Far too many grades. You could easily do away with Elite and Crack. Guard troops often had a very high opinion of themselves but little or no actual field experience, viz the British guard cavalry at Waterloo.

My homebrew 1:72 rules treat guard units more or less the same across all factions (I took the Phil Barker approach in design), with +1 to pretty much everything they attempt to do. Normally, I feel no need to differentiate beyond this unless I'm playing a scenario where, say, the British Foot Guards are pitted against the Russian guard grenadiers. However, there are some optional unit rules that give guard units the "Stoic" ability, which allows them to ignore routing friends.

Hey, whatta you gotta againsta the Neapolitans, hey. They drinka more wine than the French theya make betta pizza than the Prussians and they looka betta in their nicer uniforms than the Polish. Seriously, in a points game combined with the French you can pin the enemy in position with the Neapolitans in line and smash through with French columns. If you have a big enough battlefield you can simple swarm around the flanks as they don't walk any slower than anybody else. Always swings and roundabouts.
@NapoleonicWargaming11 ай бұрын
Hahaha. Exactly tbh, I don't really know much about their performance, I wonder if they are unfairly treated. I have to be careful Katy's dad is Neopolitan, so I just told her they're counted as Italians in the rules....
@iainmc985911 ай бұрын
@@NapoleonicWargaming Like most Italians they were a political pendulum, Monarchist to Republican and back again. They do have the prettiest uniforms of any Napoleonic Army; even today Neopolitan fashion is considered a cut more daring than any other Italian suits. Its also demoralising to the opponent in a points game where you just keep bringing more and more troops on to the table😁
