Truss rod adjustment is often out - and you need to learn how to do this, since it will vary according to climate and humidity. Incorrect relief of the neck will massively impact your action and also can affect intonation. You do need to follow certain regular maintainance steps for your guitar, and it can get stupidly expensive if you have 3 or 4 guitars that you have to take into the tech. Best to learn it yourself and to perform adjustments slowly in a considered fashion. It isn't too difficult and you only need a few basic tools.

A great comment. Thanks for posting. And yes, eventually doing all the guitar maintenance yourself will save time and ££. Although there's a tonne of information online, I do find independent music shops are happy for you to ask questions or watch them do the setup.

I learned how to set up a guitar as I learned to play. All the screws and bolts can always be turned back the other way if they are wrong. The first time I adjusted a truss rod I was shaking. I had heard all the myths that only trained Luthiers should adjust a truss rod. Bollox. Always undo first then adjust to wherever necessary. High frets can be a problem though, make sure you don't file too low. Little by little. It isn't a race.

Great comment, mate. Hopefully the beginner guitarists see this. Saves ££ and time if the adjustments can be learnt and done without taking to a shop.

Taking your guitar to a tech for truss rod, bridge and intonation adjustment is like calling an electrician home to change a lightbulb. Other than filing nuts and leveling frets, it ain't rocket surgery

Learning to perform basic guitar adjustments (and to know when it needs more in-depth attention) should be seen as part of learning to play. That is: changing strings, and adjusting the neck relief, action, and intonation as a minimum. Measuring and cutting nut slots, dressing frets etc. takes you into more specialised territory, but anyone with half-decent DIY skills can do these too. Regarding first guitars: bottom-budget ones are always, without exception, garbage (no matter what KZbin "influencers" might say). Go up a couple of price points, to the Squier CV or equivalent. These are good, reasonably priced instruments.

100%. Great comment. I alluded to the budget guitars at the end of the video. It's better to spend a bit more money and have it relatively setup well then get a super budget one and have to spend time (and maybe money) fixing it

also want to make sure all your strings are correct i have had 2 B strings instead of a B and high E, and had all sort of frustration with the E string always having high action and very difficult to bend. wrong string is not fixable without changing to correction string to match your setup but funny the reast of my string stayed in tune quite well considering totally wrong string there ha.

Yes, this does happen. I once bought a packet of strings which was actually missing the high E. I emailed Elixir who sent out a high E string which arrived in a couple of days haha

It is. I would swim much faster without it,

The other option would be to get rid of the guitar which is not reasonable. So really, there's no other option but to use the guitar and swim

@@JKGuitar Not reasonable at all. So yeah I’m putting in time woodshedding those all-important aquadynamics. If guitar sharks can do it so can we.
