I use the small APC 550s on network and computers. I have a manual transfer switch wired to the circuit hooked up to a 7500w generator over 10ga copper.

I got the 1500 for my PC setup to protect it. Awesome products. Going to have to get another one for my modem that is in the other room. I work from home as well and getting cut off in the middle of a meeting with a customer is never good. Good review.

Moved from the UK to Romania where we get frequently power outages, especially at our home in a rural village. I'm getting one of these to make sure my internet doesn't cut out while I'm working from home. Only want it for the router as we have a generator that auto-starts with a power transfer switch but our fiber internet takes FOREVER to reestablish once power has been cut

not sure about the google hub but if that is a router/wifi like your traditional TP-LINK router you can take the Ethernet straight from the ATT fiber to Ethernet dmarc and skip the ATT router "modem" box you have. They probably charge you 5-10$ a month for that router..

Have you ever thought using a portable power station with LiFePO4 battery? That seems a much better solution and can be used for other purpose while no power outage.

@@TechWinnerCC But LiFePO4 PPS will last for 10 years or longer whereas UPS battery usually last 3 years or so. In the long run, PPS will be more cost effective.

I don’t agree about it being more cost-effective. A replacement battery for this APC model costs $37. Even if I replace that 3 times over 10 years, that’s a total of $111 added to my $129 cost on the front end, Over a ten-year lifespan that’s approximately $240. I agree that a PPS gives you more flexibility all around with things like portability, perhaps leveraging solar, etc. But it’s not more cost-effective.

@@TechWinnerCC It really depends on how you look at the cost. If you buy a LiFe04 PPS, as you said, you can do many things with it and it can cover the needs for a APC. On the other hand, you bought a APC, if one day you want to something else, like travel around with a portable fridge in the back of car truck, for example, then you need to buy another PPS at that time because the APC is useless for that. So you need to buy another PPS or similar device. It will cost more. For the area I live, we only lose electricity 2 or 3 times a year. It make sense and is much cheaper to have a PPS so I can use it for many other uses, rather than have a dedicate APC for internet power backup.

I get what you’re saying. In your scenario it sounds like you’d hook up the PPS after a outage has started. My goal here is to eliminate downtime and have a automated process for handling power conditioning. A UPS provides that. I totally agree that a PPS is more versatile. A cheap Jackary starts at about $350 and better models approach $1k quickly.

Recently got my battery back up and was wondering what would the difference be if I were to connect the network directly to the back up vs just connecting the modem as a plug in? Not sure if I should be using the cable in/cable out or network in: out options.

i just bought a bluetti eb3a for this same reason but for me down in Florida where we could be without power for 8-10 days or longer if a hurricane came through i went this route so i could charge it with a cheap 100 watt solar panel to help prolong the run time

I have four 12V mini UPS units for my 1gbps fibre modem and mesh wifi routers, these have lithium ion batteries which replaced my loud and inefficient APC UPS that drew tons of power even when idle. It’s no bigger than two playing card decks side by side and can power my network for up to 8 hours vs just a bit over 2 hours on the APC. Tiny, quiet, and lasts long. CHEAPER TOO.

I would love to know more as well! Converting DC power to AC to then converting it back to DC wastes a lot of juice. It's best to not convert AC/DC or voltage levels which would greatly extend the battery power.

I also want to connect my router to a UPS. But I read and heard UPS's have a minimum watt recognition. Any 15watt or below the battery will not turn on hence the whole UPS will not recognize that there is something plugged in it. I assume when only a router is plugged to a UPS (even the base model) can power it for like 3-5 hours.

Hi there, that really depends on how much wattage your Wi-Fi router consumes. Your mileage will vary, but it’s somewhat safe to assume that it’s going to be a little bit longer than the estimate here.

I think you mean can the screen be turned off? Yes it can. A UPS like this can be used to support anything that’s plugged in to a wall outlet. How long the charge will last depends on the battery capacity and how much power the thing(s) you have plugged in draw.

I wanted more from That review, instead of telling us how many Zoom calls you are on a day. What we want to know is if this stays plugged into your outlet and the modem is plugged into it, so if the power goes off this kicks in automatically.

Yeppers! I bought a Cyber Power 1500VA/900W UPS last year to power my modem, router, and Ring Gen1 at that time and got around 2hrs 45min! I have since switched to the Ring Pro and currently only have one power pack for it and have not tested this. I can't speak for APC but the reason I went with Cyber Power is you can add a network card (which I did) to the UPS and with this option when the UPS switches to battery power it will send me a text message and an Email telling me my power is out providing my ISP is still working which so far had no issues. So pleased with this setup I'm looking into buying another smaller UPS (500VA) for my garage door opener! Because when my power does go out I can't get into my garage as I have an older door opener and then have to leave my vehicle outside and enter my house through another method. Now my power goes out quite a bit in the summer months and sometimes for DAYS so I ended buying a portable 2000W/2200W surge generator which will run up to 12hrs on one gallon of gas (In ECO mode)! This is enough to power my fridge, a small laptop, some LED lights and fans. Not living LARGE but can maintain with this small generator! I can unplug the fridge and Microwave food and then plug the fridge back in. Plus I also have a gas stove to cook with. Anyways, got off topic but a UPS is a definite must for shorter power outages! John! I’m jealous of your setup. GREAT idea about the UPS for the garage door. I may have to look into doing that, and possibly tie my MyQ garage hub in as well. Like I mentioned, our power doesn’t go out often, but it’s common for me to leave the house without house keys, completely under the assumption that I’ll have power and be able to open the garage door. Dangerous assumption.

@@TechWinnerCC ; Lol! Yes I'm using MyQ as well hooked into Ring! Also, I try to "travel" with less keys as well but I plan ahead for those times when my power is out when I get home. I always like to have an "Escape/Entry" plan so-to-speak! As far as the garage door the power rating will be listed on the actual door opener motor so that why I'm looking at a lesser wattage UPS that I can get "several" open/closes out of it. Search KZbin and there are a few videos on it that gave me the idea.

I'm highly disappointed at the on time you got with the modem and router. I know you as I do only mostly have very short power off times. But just two weeks ago we had a power outage for 26 hours. I was hoping for 10 or 12 hours. But 2 hours is just not worth it. I might as well go with a generator transfer switch and a generator. I know it will be a bit more expensive but as long as I can get gas I'm good.

Yeah you really should be looking at a generator for longer outages like that. If it were me, I’d still use a UPS and tie it in to a generator when it starts getting low.

I work at home (as does my wife). Having a UPS on a modem also provides power during the times when power flashes off for a second. Without it, your modem will reset and take 10 minutes to come back up. A UPS fixes that problem. But yeah, if you are planning on an extremely long power outage you should have a full generator of some kind to run your fridge(s) at a minimum.

The Ring power pack is FAR FAR superior to a UPS in this situation. UPS's are meant for short term operation in the event of a blackout. They don't use Li-Ion batteries like the Ring power pack does. The batteries in UPS are not meant to be fully discharged. They are not deep cycle batteries. Like the 12 volt batteries in cars, every time you significantly discharge UPS batteries, you are shortening their lives. Also, by your own test one UPS lasts much less than half as long as a Ring power pack. I own several UPS units, and have had one connected to my modem and router, but I will be switching to the this new Ring alarm and buying three of the Ring power packs.

a ups is great for internet modem backup as long it aint time warner/spectrum because when the grid gos down so dose spectrum . unless you have verizon DSL fios or fiber optics that will remain powered than a ups is useless
