I hear what your saying but the Jetboil works for me…and after 25 yrs of packing and using just about every type of stove there is, it’s still my favorite. A bit heavier but it’s never failed me in cold or wet windy weather. I’ve never scorched food in it, never tipped it over, and love the ease of using it when I stop for a break and a quick coffee at the top of the mt I just climbed. I use it way more than just to boil water in! And yes, I’m a thru hiker not a weekend warrior in good weather only. I also don’t use the dehydrated Mt House style meals….

Great comparison. I ended up going with the JetBoil MicroMo. It has a regulator that allows for simmer control and supposed better cold weather performance. Soto Windmaster for my primary stove. I have an old model Jetboil laying around that I don't use anymore because I vary up the cooking containers too much for a chimney stove like that. For vessels/systems, it varies by how many people are with me. If it's a large group on a full-day trip, I'll bring the Stanley Base Camp. If it's a medium group it's the Soto Navigator set. If it's just a couple of people I'll use a modified Stanley Vacuum Food System (the one that has dry storage & pot handle) - modified to include a variable height stand (Ikea utensil can with a square cut out to accommodate a variety of heat sources and a couple of tent stakes). For just me, usually just a Toaks 750ml pot but with that I'll use a DIY alcohol stove rather than an actual burner.

I've started cooking with optimus polaris optifuel stove, I have a jetboil zip and Alpkit Brukit as well, but I've now started to be more creative with making bread in a Trangia pan set , plus cooking stake and mushroom and chips , as I find there's not enough calories in dehydrated meals, or boil in the bag meals... I prefer proper food , so I use a 10inch seat to summit skillet 🍳 😋 which is perfect as it's concaved so the heat reaches the surrounding pan, and can cook a meat grill feast... the Optimus Polaris has been a game changer as it burns not just gas, but fuel like diesel and petrol which is sublime... love cooking outdoors great vid 👍

One piece of cookware that's missing in your video is the 9 1/2 inch flying pan. Probably the best complement to my jetboil sumo. As well as cooking freshly caught trout it is great for pancakes, bacon and eggs, omelettes, hash browns, peach cobbler and also many dishes that I would alternatively cook in a larger pot - beef stroganoff, spaetzle. For pasta I cook the pasta in the jetboil and the sauce in the frying pan. An old pie tin for a lid makes a great combo that actually does not really weigh that much. Easy to pick up at the supermarket and with a silverstone finish dead easy to clean (unlike the jetfoil frying pan which was a nightmare). i am sure that you could come up with a whole bunch of exciting dishes with a frying pan added to your culinary arsenal!

Hey GS. Jetboil isn't the worst stove, but does have it's limitations. Whatever stove you buy, I do recommend a wide/squattier pot for easier cooking and stirring. You can pair a pot with most stoves sold separately.

I confess I found this video in search of validation as I was asking myself if it was me that was getting crazy. So people fancy and expensive cooking systems that are limited to boil water? I don't get it either. Isn't the point to cook a confort meal and while on camp still have the coziness of a home cooked- meal? No way I am carrying around a system that doesn't even let me warm a liter of milk so a group of 3 or four people can have an hot chocolate. Or cook something for say, 10 minutes. Of just saute veggies or mushrooms. I just don't get it. Individual and single purpose. If you are two-four people isn't it more weight efficient to carry one cooking system instead of one per person anyways? And the bag food. No way I am limiting myself to that. I am not going out in the nature to endure into friggin powder food meal after meel. Heck it doesn't even work well for heating up canned whole meals. They all say that it's a boiler not a simmer. Implying all you need is a warm food and it doesn't matter if it's dehydrated meals all the time. But then go on and say that having quality coffee in 2 minutes instead of 3 is of primary importance. It takes even longer than That too cool down to drinkable temperature. People really need to stop with thisngear obsession and enjoy more the the experience, regardless of the gear. Thanks for making this video. Someone gets it!

I've always felt the Jetboil was poor value. According to Roger Caffin, most of the stove brands with the exception of MSR are manufactured by a large Chinese OEM (Fire Maple). For someone with the time to compare specifications and reviews of various alternatives, the effort could prove to be rewarding. Good point on knocking boiling water onto someone. For me, the problem with the interlocking systems is the additional weight penalty. When available and practical, I might resort to building a rock Stonehenge around the pot. This strategy of course could make things even worse if your structure is poorly engineered and now you've got the hazard of unbalanced rocks falling onto your pot. If this were to happen, it would be worse than no cold beer on a multi day hike.

"why aren't you cooking on your jet boil, instead of just being a bag eater?" well, its simple really. Hiking is about putting in the miles, NOT about sitting around wasting time "cooking".... the time it takes to "cook" a meal could have been spent smashing out 3-5 more miles! more miles always wins out.
@CodeGreen83 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that totally makes sense if your primary goal is to put in the maximum amount of miles. I don't think that's what it's about for everyone though. I'd say there's a whole spectrum of people ranging from so obsessed with putting in miles you only eat raw foods you can consume on the go; to just hiking a few miles in some place and more interested in just being out in the wilderness and spending more time in and around camp.
