As a Martial Artist who uses a wheelchair I have always had to make adjustments. Fortunately after training in several different systems I have found that Wing Chun works wonderfully with my wheelchair and abilities and requires fewer changes. Sticking, trapping and pulling are extremely important when fighting from a seated position and since many of its training techniques were developed so that they could be practiced while sitting on a boat back in the the Red Boat days it naturally adapts well to sitting in a wheelchair. The biggest problems I have are other people accepting that someone in a wheelchair can do Martial Arts and finding an accessible and affordable place to train.

When I teach forms I am very exact and precise to develop the muscle memory, but I tell my students to think of the exact precision as learning how to drive. Look forward look left and right and in the rear view mirror before you touch the gas pedal. Very precise driving instructions. No deviations. But two years later you’re driving with one hand, and parallel parking no problem, because you made your very own driving style.

The UFC heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou, trained a few hours with young Mike Tyson's trainer Teddy Atlas and told him he wanted to learn the Cus D'Amato Peekaboo style. Atlas told him that it doesn't suit his body type because he's tall and has a long reach. Emmanuel Steward trained Tommy Hearns who was tall and had a long reach and Wladimir Klitschko who was the same. That would be better suited for Ngannou. Mike Tyson was short, had a short reach, compact, and had exceptional speed offensively and defensively for the heavyweight division. That's exactly what D'amato designed that particular version of the Peekaboo for. There is no "one size fits all" style. Although Gracie Jiujitsu will tell you there is a "one size fits all" with their system. It is very widely applicable for a large portion of various body types. But that's not boxing.

This is a very good point that I feel isn't spoken about enough. The various animal styles each had a temperament, yet they wouldn't be used exactly the same as everyone is different.

This is some of the most essential information about martial arts that I have heard in quite some time. I'm interested now.

Once again another great informative video. My twopenny worth and understanding on this subject is that traditionally Sifu would teach aspects of their style to their students that suited their fighting attitude and physique. For example; The distance at which people like to fight (close, mid distance or long) often this is dictated by height and therefore reach or mental attitude to fighting. Animal characteristics also help to teach aspects of fighting to people of different body types. Style is the other factor that can help, e.g. I once saw a White Crane Teacher who was very tall and perfect for White Crane but his top student was at best 5' 10" and probably more like 5' 8" the top student clearly had to work much harder to deal with sparring with his teacher as the teacher could easily keep him at a distance and still attack him. So a different style (like Wing Chun) made for people who are shorter and would get in past the range that suited his opponent and get to a range that suited him and caused a problem for his opponent. Great video. Respect.

This is my new favorite video of yours Adam. Definitely sharing this one with my circle. "A System, Not A Style" I would buy that t-shirt. I would add that even without a partner or even an interest in partner or combatives work, you can still increase your biofeedback factor and move your movements in the direction of functionality (daily life or martial) by using gravity as your partner. After all, it is pressing on you literally all the time. Simple things like seeing how long you can stand on one leg and still stay neutral, relaxed, and ready to move? Or seeing how long can you stand on one leg while moving your other three limbs in different directions while keeping them all connected to your core? If you're good at standing on one leg, try it with your eyes closed. Stuff like that. It's not a substitute for a human partner, it's just a different kind of partner, one who never sleeps, gets injured, stops doing martial arts, or moves away. ;~)

Martial Arts used to be one of the most important interests to me. But I see America crumbling around me, Politically, Socially, Economically, and Spiritually. I'm 70 years of age---I know what I'm talkin' about! I have witnessed the gradual DE--evolution of, not only OUR country, but the World itself. Kung Fu, Karate, Advanced Self-Defense tech- niques will not get you very far. Keep your eyes open, and your ears "Peeled," as it were, because things are gonna' get even Crazier! We need GOD again---Get down on our knees...
