Conventional medicine approaches illness as a name it, blame it, and tame it game. But these labels or diagnoses are just names we associate with a collection of symptoms. They have nothing to do with why you have those symptoms-with the root causes of the “disease.” Conversely, just because your standard lab panel comes back normal does not always mean you are experiencing optimum health.⁣

In this episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Todd LePine about how Functional Medicine seeks to get to the root cause of health issues. They dive into the world of unconventional and advanced lab testing that they use to identify dysfunction in the body and optimize health.⁣

Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.⁣

You basically have to take out a loan to pay for these tests. They are VERY expensive. Like mortgage payment expensive. I went to a functional medicine doctor and paid $350 just for the initial consultation, then was told I needed a $950 blood test, a $800 fecal test and three more toxin & metal tests totaling $3800! These Doctors should give us a heads up on the cost of these tests. I did a functional medicine Dr. He found gluten sensitivity and Caisine allergy. Most folks are lactose intolerant, but Caisine is the protein molecule of milk! At first, changed what I eat, this made a big difference . But after a while the symptoms returns, now Dr has a lot of expensive tinctures and supplements . No more. Hi Doctor Mark. It's wonderful that you can do so much to help sick people, that go to there GP over and over for years and get no where. I'm one if them. I live in the UK, and it's difficult to find some one like you. I have been ill for 40 tears following a Hysterectomy at 32. I have been a guinea pig for Doctors for years. It's been none stop drugs of some kind. 6 years ago I had breast cancer. I have CFS and Fibromyalgia. I have tried every diet treatment and supplement available. For three years now I have been loosing weight, big amounts. I was over 11 stone, now I'm barely 9 stone 2pounds. I have been treated for Sibo, and so on. But now a scan has revealed concerning areas on both my lungs and my spleen. As I have had breast Cancer, I'm fearing the worst. But I could never afford some one like you. You are not there to help poor people. It's sad, but money talks. I bet you would not see any one that doesn't have big bucks. I would have to sell my house to see you. The worst doctors are the Endocrinologists treating and testing for Thyroid. They do not test for the active thyroid hormone FT3 and base it on just TSH and FT4 which is the inactive thyroid hormone. And the phrase “your labs looks good” is what you always hear and yet the patient is miserable. These Endos doesn’t believe in conversion issues and that’s what’s always seems to be the problem with thyroid patients and doesn’t know how to prescribe and test for T3 meds. And yes changing diet makes a big impact to help with conversion and improve one’s wellbeing but ordering the correct and needed tests is very important.

Thank you for writing that comment. You have to be wealthy to afford to be healthy! I live in California and I don’t have functional medical doctors that are in my area. Can’t find them, anyway. But I look at these videos with longing, because I have been too exhausted to function, for decades now. But I also know the disappointment t of knowing that it probably costs thousands and thousands to get treated. (I traveled to LA to see a functional doctor and she was pretty bad at it. Some of them get stuck in one healing method, and apply it to every patient, instead of doing this kind of health detective work, like the doctors in the video do.)
@katk1958
@katk1958 3 жыл бұрын
The most unfortunate thing about it is, if insurance did start to cover functional medicine then it'd no longer be any good either. The insurance companies via disincentivizing, etc., would tie the doctors' hands. You wouldn't get tested for anything more than you do now... your temp, blood pressure, and maybe a simple cbc blood test if you're really lucky. The system's worst nightmare is having a test show what's wrong with a patient who isn't actively dying/medical emergency within a few hours or days. As a matter of fact, even with positive tests they worm their way out of the diagnosis anyway. So then there's no treatment to give you a chance at overcoming your illness because you don't know exactly what you're fighting. All we have available is our diet, which is extremely important. But, diet cannot grow new adrenal glands, repair channelopathies, neuromuscular junctions, or tubulopathies, repair other organs like hearts, or remove tumors, or repair genetic mutations. Diet can only do so much.

Do u know for sure that ur Canadian Medicine doesn't pay for these kinds of tests, w/ Some form of Functional Medicine? Just curious abt. ur 'system', bc. I live in "US" n we're pretty much 'out of luck' trying to get something like this paid for by insurance, Gvt. based or private either. Unless it' a 'fluke'. n Most people here in 'US' think of Canadian Single-Payer as the 'gold standard'. But I had an 'allergist' once tell me that ---"some people are pretty much 'bothered' by everything", n he did tests on me that others hadn't. Here, it was covered by my insurance. Also, Chiropractors often deal in a lot of the same issues that these Dr. Hyman n others on these videos often talk abt. I've had members of my family get relief from health issues that their 'conventional' Drs. couldn't help them with. Also paid for by public n private insurance. Have u seen U Tube videos w/ Dr. Eric Berg, a Chiropractor, who discusses many of the same things that Dr. Hyman n his guests do? I'm not even interested in Keto dieting (too much 'fat'), but I still find many of Dr. Berg's vids. highly informative.

Found a functional doctor in Arkansas who is also an oncologist. Checked out her website, Does not accept insurance! Why? I am 64 positive At age 40 Lyme and was treated, also tested positive for rocky mountain fever. Took me, several doctors, to get this diagnosed. Then when I still was not feeling good the doctor swore to me he never said I had Lyme Disease! Called my insurance and asked if Lyme was in the records. Yes, he had. Now why did he do that to me? He yelled at me about how he had tested me for malaria on and on. He was clearly frustrated and had a belly full of dealing with me. So he sent me to another doctor in another state. Who went so far as to tell me Missouri and Arkansas do not have Lyme disease. Told me I was too young to be feeling so bad. And sent me on my way. I had given him a brain scan that had been done and he took it threw it on his desk, and never looked at it. It was all so weird I pretty much gave up on doctors. So for 20 years now I have complained of bone pain, joint flu-like symptoms, and stomach issues. I also supposedly have a blocked 100% carotid artery in my left neck Which was operated on. when it was 50 - 75% blocked, 5 years later, and ultrasounds on the neck every year. Which funny thing was the first year it was right back to the 50-75% level. Nobody said a word. Year 5 is 100%. That was 13 years ago. Feel at this point I must be on the verge of death. I feel so awful I look forward to death. At least the pain will be gone. I do not have a life to speak of cause I feel and look awful. My hair is falling out in clumps now. I suffer the same joint pain, nausea and throw up weird pain in my upper tummy, and rib pain that is just off the charts. Luckily for me, rib pain passes pretty quick, feel weak, Yet my latest attempt with the general GP said all my blood tests are normal. Does any of this sound normal to anyone? Memory issues, hearing issues, shall I go on. ugh

I hear you! I’ve been paying out of pocket to see a functional health practitioner and my husband is about to have my head since it’s not covered by or otherwise really good insurance. Thank God he is incredibly healthy, although that is part of why he doesn’t really understand I think, but I have so many complicated issues I finally just forged ahead. I’m glad I did, but it really is getting expensive... can’t do all that they want me to yet.

Hi! I was developing chronic pain and taking 2 Advil a day despite never popping OTC meds for aches before. I chalked it up to having a physically demanding job (even though I did it in my 20's) and to getting old (pushing 40's). What finally helped was taking Essential Amino Acids. Something in there (not histamine) took away all the aches and I didn't need Advil anymore!!! I did more research on why it helps and it turns out that AAs + Collagen + Saw Palmetto extract is a synergetic combo. I don't know about saw palmetto but the collagen helps my joints!! I hope this helps you and anyone else out there with chronic pain!

My Lyme and mold specialist just goes by the numbers on my lab work. I still have a fuzzy headache, and I feel stiff and weak. I’m doing my own research to figure out how to feel functional in my everyday life. When you said sometimes doctors don’t test for nutrition, it hit me that she never mentions anything about my past infections besides the Lyme coinfections, the horrible stress I have going on, nor nutrition. I’d love to have some of these tests run and find out why I’m so weak and not healing. I also have a broken shoulder that hasn’t been healing correctly, so that’s an issue as well. Ugh! I’ve been sick for 20 years, but did have Scarlet Fever and strep at least 3 times a year growing up, pseudonymous aeriginosa 5 years ago from a surgery. Any thoughts?

This is always following some type of infection when my autoimmune system is working overtime against me that my creatinine, Bilirubin and Gilbert syndrome are high. Still no treatment because everyone I’ve been to is dumbfounded because it is not in their textbook. If anyone can connect me with a specialist boy that would great. I know where you're coming from and understand completely....I'm sitting up in bed here in Tasmania, it's 12.37 am and I'm worried about my heart because of palpitations and not being able to sleep....it's not every night but when I over do things in the day, I'm hyperthyroid and take carrbrimazole so I'm the opposite of you🤗...I'm seeing a new doctor this week and will make an appointment when I can to see a heart specialist to get a complete check....it costs a bit but I just save for it.....it's kind of funny because I had a stress test a few years ago and everything was fine, I was convinced there must be a problem somewhere with my heart, I went away and not worrying about it anymore got rid of the symptoms and it was a relief....so try and not worry, talk to someone about how you feel, find a different doc and get another opinion, just talk to people who can assure you and find you some peace with how you're feeling.Its no fun is it, but do your own research, that's what I did, are you able to see an Endocrinologist!?....they specialise in the thyroid but a lot of it can be diet, gluten, lack of magnesium etc....I swear by magnesium for nerves and sleep..look after yourself the best you can, eat as healthy as you can, find things that relax you in the meantime💐🌹and also check about how much medication you're taking, it might need to be tweaked etc....just a thought, but please look in to magnesium 💐🌹💐
