The Link Between Autoimmune Disease, Chronic Fatigue, And Hidden Infections

Pandemic aside, we’re seeing a national immune crisis. Autoimmune conditions continue to rise to record numbers, not to mention all of the chronic mystery illnesses that so many people struggle with daily. I’ve experienced this firsthand, along with the corresponding frustration and fear. There is an intriguing hypothesis about these conditions that I get into with my guests, Dana Parish and Dr. Steven Phillips, today on The Doctor’s Farmacy: underlying infections. Sneaky tick-borne diseases like Lyme, parasitic infections, and certain viruses can be extremely hard to diagnose. Meanwhile, they can contribute to an immune system collapse and other life-threatening breakdowns throughout the entire body.
Dr. Phillips and Dana Parish share their incredible stories of overcoming chronic stealth infections after numerous doctors couldn’t help them. Lyme was a common factor for both of them, while Dr. Phillips was also able to diagnose Bartonella in Dana. At their worst, they both had extremely limited mobility and felt their lives were at risk. Dana shares that in addition to recovering her mobility and strength, treating these infections also had a profound impact on her mental health by reducing her anxiety and depression. Dr. Phillips’ journey not only forced him to be his own detective to find healing, but also showed him how much discordance there is among conventional medicine in treating diseases like Lyme.

To put this in perspective, my daughter went through a really bad patch at around 12. Kept getting so sick and nobody listened. Docs blame adolescence and even my own brother in law who is a doctor watch her drink water and sever leg cramps on a bike ride saying she needed to grow up. One day it hit me and i noticed her breath, checked her sugar and was high. Type 1 diabetes and nobody saw it because they wrote it off as a kid thing. Never give up and be persistent.

I saw a functional medicine doctor and she had actually quit on me (even after writing on her sign up form that you have to promise to stay the course and not quit...but I guess its ok if the doctor quits). The thing is not all functional doctors are equal. She had no idea what was causing my problems and she said I was reacting to too many things (which of course is one reason why I went there...plus no matter what I ate I was burping all the time, no Appetite, etc). So even if you go see one they might not actually help you.

Love that Dana said you have to be your own advocate. After 1 year of chronic stress at work, I developed some of the same symptoms as Dana. My General Practician at the time, just said it was stress and anxiety and prescribed me anti-depressants. I knew there was more to it and felt that he totally missed or dismissed the physical symptoms I was trying to stress to him. I eventually ended up in the hospital. At first, they tried to say it's probably stress. Then they did a ultrasound on my pancreas, liver and right kidney. They found no issues. They never said anything was wrong with my blood work however, once I got a copy of it, I researched the levels that were out of range. I found high glucose and 3 others that indicated infection. I'm pretty sure the high cortisol was causing high blood sugar. Anyway, I couldn't get doctors to help so I did my own research and decided to do a clean anti-inflammatory diet and supplements. I also eliminated my stress by quitting my job and took time out for self care. If I didn't do that, I think I would have died. It's been over a year now and I've doing much better.

Let's say the doctor is right and it is psychiatric. What burns me up is how the general practitioners treat psychiatric problems as if they are somehow the fault of the patient. It's antiquated and outdated thinking. Psychiatric disorders are biological just like other diseases. It is not the fault of the patient. I've been a consumer of the psychiatric system for 20 years. Occasionally I will have an emergency where I need to go to the ER. I am always treated like scum of the earth. ER physicians despise psychiatric patients, but we have no choice but to go to the ER. At least where I live, there are no specialty psychiatric emergency centers.

It's not the same health issue but I remember when I suddenly developed food intolerances I went through so many doctors and tests to wind up with a diagnosis of IBS. At one point they were telling me I needed to get my gallbladder removed but they also said it might not solve my problems. I decided to see for myself if I might be lactose intolerant - and I was. No wonder I had a strong reaction for the gallbladder test if they made me drink cream or whatever it was. Still shaking my head at the fact that I almost had a pointless surgery. But thankfully I came through it and kept my gallbladder 🙏 the whole experience has been crazy making and I am thankful I finally got a GI doctor who told me about low FODMAP but definitely think I will eventually need to see a functional medicine doctor since nobody I talk to wants to acknowledge the fact that my IBS and eczema flare at the same time and are connected, etc. It seems silly to me, especially after seeing so many of your videos, to try to treat each health issue as a completely unrelated and separate condition.

Makes me wonder. I was very young and in my bath and found a pink circle with a dot inside on my upper arm. It didn't lead to anything at the time, but since I've had, psoriasis (at 22), Coeliac Disease, after many visits from teen's onwards for stomach complaints, (at 65) (diagnosed very late 18 years after being early retired for depression), then polymyalgia rheumatica, lymphoedema and now pulmonary oedema. I'd had a heart check about five years ago and perfect heart valves then. After my 5 Covid vaccines I've recently gone down with pulmonary oedema and leaky valves and warned that I am now suffering from early heart failure. I've managed to reach 80 in spite of all these though! Was given Ativan for the stomach aches, thankfully not good at taking them and gave up. Now I have the doctors ringing me every week checking on me (until they give up)! UK NHS experiences!

Your channel has been such a godsend for me. I’m recovering from several chronic illness after spending everything I have to seek completely useless help from dozens of traditional physicians , losing my job, retirement fund, home, and car and almost my son. This all began with my first hospitalization in 2018. By listening to others who’ve gone through this and finally stopped myself from trying to convince drs, hospitalists and my family I’m not crazy I’m finally getting to a point I can care for my son like he deserves. I’m a single mom and it’s been tough. I’m still out of work and my private disability policy was denied at the cusp of pandemic because I had no “diagnosis” but over a dozen inpatient hospitalizations. I understand. So sorry this has happened to you. I hope you have a diagnosis and are working on curing the root cause. I developed Hashimotos a few months after a complicated and life threatening c section and subsequent serious infections. It took months and many doctor visits to find the Hashi. I was the one who suggested the thyroid test from my own research. Not the doctors. They dismissed me saying fatigue was common in new mothers. Blessings to you.

My wife has carsenoid cancer(large mass removed she almost died)the cancer had babies, cataplexia with narcalepsy, sleep paralysys. She has carsenoid syndrome. Has the suicidal thoughts an chronic fategue, degenerative discs, arthritis in the knees, high functioning autistic (ausburger). She got the druggie, hypochondriac treatment from doctors for over 11 years until she almost died when she had committed herself to an instatution, had a kidney infarction they rushed her to the hospital next door and because they didn't have her records there they went in, found the cancer and removed it hours before she would have died. She had a record mass of tumors. So you all know as well how backwards the doctors are trained to deal with reality. I hope this trend is in the process of becoming constructive like you are referring to. It took an exorbitant amount of time to get where she is now with the diagnosys of the things she has had but doctors didn't want to diagnose(literally).

Ever since I learned I had Lyme and wasn't getting anywhere with my healing I wanted to see Dr. Hyman but knew I could not afford to because functional medicine doctors I am told, do not accept insurance. I could never afford to pay out of pocket but am suffering still all these years later. Someone needs to help us with tick borne illnesses because regular MDs don't believe in chronic Lyme and end up wanting to "pill" you to death or refer you to a psychiatrist.

I am in my third year of antibiotics…after years of suffering. I had issues with my bones, joints and skin. I kept getting churned with a rheumatologist telling me I was fine and reluctantly giving me a three day course of antibiotics then finally was referred to a dermatologist who treated my skin issues and have had massive success with the antibiotic course of treatment. *I was referred to an infectious disease Dr but couldn’t find one in the area I live or I would have been on the IV antibiotics *(am on oral) but trying to find treatment for my acute symptoms was very frustrating. I am now taking Pilates and getting better by the day. Please keep researching and talking about this hidden infection-it is a huge issue. Thank You!

I still can’t understand how functional medicine differs from regular medicine. Of course, physicians are trained to diagnose and treat. What’s crucial here is the realization that the immune system isn’t as messed up as most medically trained people believe-many chronic diseases are due to uncleared infections, and the immune system is doing the best it can with an untenable situation. When AIDS came along in the early 1980s it was surprising that here was an infection that couldn’t be cleared. Now we’re realizing that uncleared infections aren’t so rare after all. Excellent and very important video. Check out the work of Paul Ewald, PhD for the importance of chronic infections in general.

Yes true, though a lot of them are for the convenience of the doctor and insurance companies that are trying to cover their butts. I have had one C sections with 4 Vbacs. My csection was an emergency one. But, I was told for my second one that I had a 1% chance of delivering naturally. The day I was suppose to get a sono, to see the size of my baby, I went into labor. I delivered him no epidural(becuz I wanted to feel it all so I could give it my all). I pushed for a long 45 minutes and he flew out ( and yes, the doc took awhile to put me back together) and then I had 3 more vbacs. The last baby I had to go to an out of network to VBAC. Or have a scheduled csection. Why would I do that after 3 successful vbacs?? That’s my story. So yes they are over done. That’s just a fact!!! Cuz woman are told like back in the day. And yep, it’s and insurance problem and docs that don’t want their life to always be on call. Jmo!!

It's nice of you to mention that on behalf of mothers who have had to go thru the C-section child birth. It's scary, and comes with dangers of it's own. Due to really High preg indcd High BP... I had to have a C-section. There were some dehydration issues and preeclampsia that had me on bed rest till 38 wks, at which point it was decided that my baby needed to come out since his lungs were developed completely, and BP-wise, he and I both were not in a good situation. I've listened twice to this vid and didn't hear anything negative toward mothers who have had c-sections. He mentioned it amongst potential sources, reasons or causes of different kinds of infections. My question for you is "Did I miss something?" or did you just make this statement re: C-Sections as a sort of PSA on behalf of C-section Mother's? I do feel some guilt even now, (tho my child is 25) that I wasn't able to deliver naturally (I mean vaginally + an epidural.) My concerns are based around his life long health, and I recall reading that there is some kind of natural immune fortified fluid or secretions that infants get when going thru the birth canal... Something I can to what colostrum is to the insides of the baby once they hit the outside world... something that my son didn't get. I've only read about this bonus vaginal canal immunity secretions once, in a book or an article I read, and I believe it was prior to knowing that I was going to need a C-section. Do you know what they're referring to? How important is this extra immunity that infants get from going through the birth canal that other children don't get?
@deendrew36
@deendrew36 3 жыл бұрын
@@kimtonearts the reason I kinda was like....”hey, wait....” was because near the beginning he lumped c-sections in with environmental pollution, eating processed foods, heavy metals, etc. And I just thought you cannot equate a life saving surgery with eating McDonald’s and smoking. Yes, I know many c-sections are not necessary. In Canada we don’t have quite as many unnecessary ones as they might in the States where you can basically choose. The doctors don’t get paid the same way here. But I know that some are not necessary. But some absolutely ARE, like true medical emergencies, life and death. Don’t feel guilty about bringing your child into the world alive. The alternative does not bear thinking about. I cannot tell you the number of dead babies I have seen because the mother refused a c-section. Absolutely senseless. As for the immunity acquired through vaginal birth....sure, it’s a thing. I have read about that as well. They get exposed to certain bacteria in the canal that help colonize their skin and mucous membranes with beneficial bacteria. But a woman can’t beat themselves up about something like that, it’s futile. That chance at greater immunity isn’t worth much if the baby is dead. Or will the father be like, “it doesn’t matter if my wife is dead, as long as my kid has a few extra bacteria.” I don’t think anyone would think this.

Any time in my life that I've taken certain antibiotics, I've felt an immediate improvement. My multiple doctors who don't communicate with each other, and bat me back and forth between them like a bad tennis ball, completely ignore me when I talk about antibiotics and infection. UpToDate: “Chronic Lyme disease - Chronic Lyme disease is a term that is used by some practitioners and patient advocacy groups. This term has not been clearly defined and can include post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome, as well as illnesses and symptom complexes for which there is no convincing scientific evidence of any relationship to B. burgdorferi infection [15,42]. Many of these patients have other recognizable syndromes or diagnoses. In one case series, for example, three patients who were diagnosed as having chronic Lyme disease had an underlying malignancy [48]. Among patients with nonspecific symptoms of fatigue and myalgias, these subjective symptoms are sometimes accompanied by tender points of fibromyalgia [49]. Since fibromyalgia is common in the general population, the association of Lyme disease and fibromyalgia may sometimes be by chance alone.”

I actually did my research before taking the vax. But if I wanted to see my mom in the nursing home, it was a requirement. And she was about to pass. So I took the plunge and got it. During the pandemic there were few options for literal life and death situations. Since then…I continue to struggle. My new “normal” reset is much lower than it had been previously. Little that I do helps. I mill my own flour from wheat berries. I cook using natural ingredients only-the “from the ground/nature” sorts of ingredients, with little or no processing unless I am the one doing the processing. It helps. But I doubt, at the rate it’s going, that I’ll ever see the old “normal” again let alone really feel good.

I promote a herbal elixir that recondition the blood activating natural killer cells, immune cells, and creates cytokines strengthening your immune defenses. Many have been able to naturally heal themselves from all types of chronic metabolic dis-eases. Inbox me for more information

@@jwmills3 Psoriasis is an over active immune response if anything it needs lessening not strengthening. Auto immune problems can occur in babies and toddler too, it’s not always a lifetime of abuse. Of course you have to give your body every chance to heal but there is no panacea. (Or none I’ve found). You must be careful not to descend into quackery particularly with illnesses that can have fatal outcomes.

Just a question - why would the cure/treatment for Lyme and these other illnesses not be shared with the entire healthcare industry? Is it too much trouble for them to learn? Is it because they can't patent a drug for it? Please.

I find it incredibly frustrating and heartbreaking to be sick and hear all this info on youtube but not actually be able to go see the specific Drs who are capable of treating people and healing them. There are very few functional Drs who are as capable as this Dr being interviewed, many just take your money and don't help. This info doesn't really help us unless we can get care from this Dr and also we need to be in a financial position to do so. I also notice alot of functional medicine drs are chiropractors, I think the MD's who then switch over to be functional medicine like the Drs in this video are usually more knowledgeable and capable.

Dr Phillips said; "We are living in an increasingly toxic environment. I think that a lot of us are less able to deal with infections that are common in the population." Many doctors and patients agree entirely. Why is addressing the infections, we cannot cope with, more important than drastically reducing our exposure to the toxins? If the reason we can no longer cope with the infections is because of the toxic environment, the problem is the toxic environment not the infections. The same applies to long haulers. The problem isn't the virus, it is that they are less able to deal with it, because of the toxic environment.
