It honestly wasn't Kaoris death that hit the hardest in this show. "Your Lie in April..." Kaoris lie was. Finding out that this whole time she had idolized Arima as a musician and made it her life's goal to play with him. And the fact that she planned things out to avoid hurting Tsubaki and keep the 3 friends together while still being Amiras stepping stone back into the music world. ... Wow, just wow. Great stuff !

I remember one scene of foreshadowing was when Kousei, Kaori, Tsubaki, Watari, and Kashiwagi were at the school pool. They were asking each other about what they wanted to do in their future and lighting sparklers. When somebody asked Kaori what she wanted to do in her future she said something along the lines of "I haven't really thought about that yet" and it showed her sparkler suddenly going out. I'd assume this was early foreshadowing for her death.

Julia Brooks Late reply, but the reason why they made her hair more pale is because Kaori is meant to be colorful, bright, et cetera while Kousei is monotone. Kousei is monotone because of his past, and when Kaori ‘realizes’ she is about to die, that event affects her. Which leaves her growing monotone. Well, that is my theory for that at least.

For some reason I always thought she had leukemia. The symptoms are very alike with anaemia with fatigue, shortness of breath and pale skin(as both of those are blood diseases), but it still has no cure and affects people of all ages. Patients could also have sudden nosebleeds and bleeding gum, which we see in the anime. Also, when I searched how do patients with leukemia die, it said ‘it can include blood clots and heart failure’. Paralysis also can happen, but it’s not as common. But it as well says that high temperature and loss of weight is a sign that someone with leukemia has their last days to live. We can see both in the final scene where firstly, Kaori says that it’s really hot in the room(and Kousei wouldn’t agree with that), and secondly Kousei would admit that she is very light when he carried her.

Another thing about Kaori's illness that i've noticed was that during her fall in her home, the camera zooms to her feet. From what i remember reading about FA, a problem that comes with it is that the feet kind of arches, which also causes trouble walking and needs surgery to fix. Kaori also died extremely young and would've lived a bit longer if she had a diet with low blood sugar (there were many scenes of Kaori having a sweet tooth and eating those pastries that had a lot of sugar and carbs). So her diet also contributed to her early death. I think.

When he said that it "puts too much focus on less than irrelevant characters" I have to say I disagree. The background characters, having backstory and some depth makes the show all the more interesting.

She probably has cancer. Good theory, but Friedreich's Ataxia generally has profound spinal curvature/scoliosis. The scene where she is transferred to the ICU also probably isn't cardiac arrest (more likely respiratory arrest due to ascending nerve paralysis). The pills she takes are probably a combination of steroids and other things (Japan gives out a lot more medications than people in the west usually take). ALS fits somewhat but surgery wouldn't help her, ditto things like Guillain-Barre or tick-borne paralysis which would mimic her symptoms. The neurological deficits would be explained by spinal cord involvement of some process, though. The problem is that she appears to have a chest/abdominal surgery, which doesn't make a ton of sense for neurological illnesses affecting the arms. The indolent course over years that gradually gets worse supports a genetic etiology, but that she has periods of being totally fine and then getting ill again could point to something like multiple sclerosis (which would not be treated surgically), severe autoimmune conditions (which likely wouldn't involve surgery), or cancer (with recurrence occurring at the time she saw her parents crying in the hospital). My bet would be on cancer with metastasis to the spinal cord, though the surgery shown is below her neck (though this may be Kosei's imagination of her procedure, or only be showing the induction of anesthesia). Anemia generated from tumor burden, treatment, or other hemolytic process captures the ongoing weakness, and metastasis to the spinal cord could explain the ascending paralysis. Treatment of a tumor in the spinal cord itself, if high enough (above C3-5 vertebrae in her upper back) in the setting of metastatic cancer would carry a high risk/low reward like the surgeon is saying. Otherwise, a neuroendocrine tumor with paraneoplastic or autoimmune response to the nerves could occur while young and reoccur at an older age and may be found in the abdomen, but I wouldn't expect such a surgery to be that risky unless it involved a significantly vascular structure (heart, aorta) which would be unusual.

Interesting theory. It fits almost perfectly, however I think it has one problem: which is the surgery that is highly risky and only will give her a very limited extra time? The only surgery I can think for Friedreich is to put an pacemaker or a defibrillator implant but those are not that risky and would give her a lot more time. also, why such a big amount of pills? Thinking about it, I believe that it can brain cancer. Specifically, it could be a recurrence of a brain tumor she could have when she was younger (that explains the surgery in her past and the in/out hospitalization). The treatment can be an aggressive chemotherapy (such as that large amount of pills she had and the IV later) that can cause her anemia and fatigue as secondary effects. A brain tumor can cause fainting and the progressive paralysis and lose of muscular control. Depending on the tumor, once the symptoms appears, the progression could be really fast, and that's why at the beginning she seems fine and later on, the disease goes faster and faster. As for the heart problem, it could also be a consequence of the treatment, as it is known that chemotherapy (specially and aggressive) increases the risk for arrhythmia and heart failure. Finally, this also explain why the surgery was very risky (brain surgery always is) and if the chemotherapy wasn't working or the tumor could not be completely removed or she already had a metastasis, the surgery would only give her a bit more of life. Anyway, your theory fits way better than ALS or any BMD.

MatPat's theory on the body chemistry of FMA is factually wrong. There is no denying that. His mole calculations is just plain wrong. I'm an engineering student, so it was simple for me, but for anyone who has taken a basic chemistry class, yes it was embarrassing. He could have easily done more research or even got a chemistry student to check, oh well. Has to be wrong. That's not the only video where his calculations are wrong, a lot of his science based theories have wrong calculations as well. I noted down all the symptoms Kaori had, and researched all the possible illnesses she could have had. As I said in the video, the most popular theories were that she had Bone Marrow Failure or ALS, which both don't meet a criteria. No one came to the conclusion I did, which was that she had Friedreich's Ataxia. So saying that "everyone else would have done that if they really wanted to know" is ignorant, because clearly no one else has. Please do not pretend that MatPat is any sort of scientist, when he fails basic math.

I always assumed it was Multiple Sclerosis, just because that makes Kaori more in line with famous cellist Jacqueline DuPres, a truly incredible musician who was only able to preform for a decade before retiring at 28 and spend the next 14 years battling the illness, dying at 42. I know what you mean... my grandmother died a couple of months before I watched this show, and then I had to go through a whole other period of grief because of Kaori's death... it still hurts. I mean, I know it seems silly to grieve for a fictional character, but when you get attached, they're almost like real people. I still can't think of this anime or watch things about it without having to actively suppress this pain in my heart and the urge to cry. Kaori understood Kousei in a way that Tsubaki never can. That's why I hate that it's implied that he would get with her because she doesn't deserve him. Plus, how could Kousei even be able to move on after an experience like that? Even if they did end up together, I don't think Tsubaki would ever replace Kaori in his heart. They were too perfect for each other. I love a dramatic ending that really pulls at the heartstrings, but I just can't understand how you could put your own character through so much trauma... poor Kousei. I get it, and it's really beautiful and artistic and I love/hate it, but I just feel bad for the guy because I get what you're saying about treating anime like real life. I do the same, with books and everything. The characters are alive in their own world, that story, and when one dies, there's no redemption from it, so it's always a terrible event.
