I don’t think most anglers are aware how much their line choice affects their rod action. It can be the difference between a good day fishing and a bad day!

I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for six MLF Championships and won roughly a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

I knew that lines either stretch or don’t stretch. I never considered that this affects the action on my rods by lowering or raising its action. Great info as now I can pair lines and rods more intelligently to achieve the effect I need. Thanks Matt definitely not a waste of our time!

Excellent point Matt, more and more I enjoy your channel not only for the short format (8-10 mins) but for the themes. I have returned so many rods precisely because of that you mention and agree again with you that there is no standard measurement and that the line type definitely changes the concept of the rod.

As a rod maker, I also believe that spine makes a huge difference in performance. Most just picks up an expensive rod and think it's good. Spine it and many are not correctly made. I believe a mid/higher end spine rod gives you more accurate and longer cast than very high end rod that isn't. Just my experience.

4 minutes in and WOW! Excellent Excellent Excellent video! I have a customer that only orders/wants XF rods, swears by them. I have another one that has broken( NOT MY Builds) 3 rods in almost identical fashion from another brand. I tried to expalin these concepts to him after fishing with him, I will now refer him to you and see if it helps his understanding. Thanks bud!

Pairing the line to rod action is critical. I film a lot of my fish catches. People ask me occasionally about how hard I set the hook and am i not worried about line breakage. I tell them if you pair the action up with the right line breakage is not a problem. I set the hook just as hard with 14 pound line as I do 17 because the rod I use matches the line strength.

Great information! I think another great video could be on how hook gauge and gap can play into this whole scenario as well. For example, I found out the hard way that 8lb. mono on my extra fast "jerkbait rod" with a medium/heavy wire swimbait hook lead to not the best landing ratios at the boat...but on the other hand, have literally never lost me a fish with a treble hook bait. BTW, I learned my lesson and bought some guppy heads...and love the hook choice.

Hey, Matt. Great info & something to be aware of when spooling up. A question: What type of line do rod mfg'ers use when rating their rods' line test range? Do they use mono, flouro, copolymer? Or does each mfg'er use a different line type?
@MattStefanFishing
@MattStefanFishing 3 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't have that answer but assume everyone does it differently since each brand can be so different.

Stefan, the way you describe it in the video, are you are talking about the effective end result to the bait and assigning the changes solely to the rod tip action for a simplified explanation or does the rod actually deflect differently based on line type? I like getting into the weeds of topics like this! Great video! I'm asking to make sure I'm not too far into the weeds on this.

Too bad all rod manufacturers don’t use a CRB Deflection Graph so everyone’s rods would rate more similar. I recently bought a M/H rod that’s closer to my XH rods. It’s way off it’s rating.

Hi Matt, everybody recommands graphite fast rods for spinnerbaits, but I find moderate fast action blend blanks with braid to mono to cast further and to keep the fish hooked better, what is your take? Thanks a lot, I love your no bs channel.

Perfect timing. I had my rod arsenals pretty well matched up and it ran across several brands and types. My comment is about my blade jig rod. I thought I had it down good and then broke that rod. Ok, I’ve got lots of rods and it should be no problem finding one that would work that day. Couldn’t have been more wrong, missed fish, lost fish.. I tried three that day and all weren’t right. This went on for weeks. I finally hit on a fluro combo that’s good but the braid struggle continues. Any thoughts on this
@MattStefanFishing
@MattStefanFishing 3 жыл бұрын
For braided line with a vibrating jig I believe the best rod is a composite blend rod. It has the sensitivity of graphite and the parabolic bend of a glass rod

So if mono moves the action 1 step lower, and braid one step higher, would fluro then be a true reflection of the action of the rod? thanks
