Surely this is an absurd conclusion. If you press your hand to a mirror, it traces its size perfectly. If you point a mirror to the international space station, the astronauts will appear so small that you can’t even trace them.
@Vsauce10 ай бұрын
Keep in mind that we're talking about YOUR view of YOUR OWN reflection. To outside observers, yes, a hand on a mirror will fit on its own reflection. But if the hand could see, it would observe a half-sized (but very near) image of itself. Try it with your own head! Put your eyeball right up near a mirror and place one finger on the mirror at your reflection's chin and one at the top of it's head. Step back: Half size!

@ImGonnaOilYouUp10 ай бұрын
@@reply_off The size of an object in a mirror doesn't change because it travels twice the distance. The mirror reflects light, and the size is based on your perspective, not the distance the light travels. Moving away might make it look smaller, but it's a trick of perspective, not the mirror changing the size.
@ilona363010 ай бұрын
@@reply_offI like to look at it this way: let's say you took 10 steps back from a mirror and now the whole mirror appears to you 2 times smaller. Meanwhile your reflection travels the same 10 steps away from a mirror and now relatively to a mirror it also becomes two times smaller. So no matter where you go, the mirror and your reflection will increase/decrease in size by the exact same amount

I learned this manually because of the warning on car side mirrors. "Objects are closer than they appear." Edit: For some reason people didn't understand the correlation between my comment and Michael's video. But if you think about it, the objects in the mirror that you see calculates the distance from you to the mirror PLUS the distance between the mirror and the object, that's why they have to make them convex for them to look even just a little bit closer but even that can't bridge that gap.

It says 'ЯOЯЯIM', as in MIRROR but mirrored, but i think that flipped around R means 'ya' in the Russian alphabet, and apparently KZbin automatically translates that

Think of it as how objects appear smaller the further away they are. When your super fare from the mirror both you and the outline appear smaller while the closer you get the greater each one gets. Because they do this at the same time you will always be able to fin inside the outline. However if you have a friend at a fixated point the would only see you change sizes while the out line doesn’t move. Hope this makes sense. I tried explaining it in a way that makes it easier to understand

Back in the days when shorts weren't so popular, I remembered there's an episode where Michael had covered this topic in his video. The reason why distant objects appear small is that this is an illusion caused by visual angle. However, the mirror doesn't care about it. Whatever is projected on the mirror will always have the same size regardless of where the observer stands.
