It's amazing how moving away from where people think a phrase should start changes the groove, that and the swung 16th notes sounds great.

Right?! I've always loved how one phrase can have many different 'feels' depending on where you start that phrase in the bar.

this was really helpful - thanks Rich! Breaking this down to really understand the placement & shifts is helping me feel this better. In the past, when filling in the space between the repeated pattern, I’d often hit a “panic point” where I’d realize I wouldn’t be able to launch into the pattern again at the right spot. This is helping me to visualize & better anticipate the shape of the groove 👍🙏

That's for sure! When I started writing songs and not just jamming, covering or adding to ones that my peers wrote, I found this dilemma that happened very frequently to me and, j found out later, others. When you are looking for a chord progression to start on, to write around ..most of them are so familiar lol. Like I could randomly pick a B flat progression and after playing it for a few minutes straight, I would start to hear a song that existed. It bothered the hell out of me! So much so, that I stopped composing on purpose lol. I would basically just make a vamp loop on my guitar, sit down and feel out a moody, funky , groovy drum track. Then I'd literally just stand there with my eyes closed getting deep into the creation. Feeling the drums and getting the sound of the chord into my head so much that it was the only thing in there. Then I'd start going at it. Keeping the deepest possible groove the track would allow and diddle around with whatever I could think of that went with it. Most times, I'll get something out that just clicks in my head. I record it and throw it in the loop....boom, song started. I've locked in 5 songs that I am pretty much satisfied with. And about 300 thag are still sitting on my hard drive waiting for me to grow them lol

In all honesty, that has always been a struggle for me as well. I wouldn't be the best guy to ask about this. Players like Scott Devine, or Damian Erskine or pdbass (my favourite bass channel) would be far more knowledgable about this.

Hey Redd. Thank you! My metronome is set to 80 bpm with beats 1 and 3 turned off. If you're not able to mute specific beats on your metronome you can set yours to 40 bmp and think of the click on 2 and 4. Hope that makes sense. 🙏🏾
