Re Lawrence’s question: if you feel too awkward about discussing driving with an elderly relative or are unsure if now is the time for them to hang up the keys then you could suggest that they attend a driving assessment. I work as a driving advisor for a ‘Driving Mobility’ centre. Driving Mobility is a charitable organisation backed by the Department for Transport which accredits over 20 centres across the UK. The assessment is a little bit like a driving test (but not as regimental/formal) with safety being the main focus, at the end of the assessment a recommendation will be made. Assessments are undertaken by a Driving Instructor and an Occupational Therapist who will write a report with their recommendations and further advice - this can include being told to stop driving with immediate effect if a dangerous standard of driving is observed. Families often find this the easier option as the assessors deliver the bad news based on evidence from the drive.
@Leo312913 жыл бұрын
The issue with this though is that it's like passing a driving test. You drive to your best, once it's finished, you relax and drive to your normal standard and concentration levels. My Dad went through this. Passed his driving assessment and then a few months later got into an incident to which the police advised him to give up his license and that was enough in the end to convince him.

Passing someone on the inside isn’t an illegal move. Overtaking is a manoeuvre, as is undertaking. If you pass someone on the inside then pulling into the middle lane that’s bad. Maintaining the speed limit, in any lane is fine.
@brianbillington3 жыл бұрын
Undertaking - If you do not change lane to undertake (i.e stay in the slow lane and pass the car in the middle lane) you have not committed any offence , but if you move lane to undertake you are at risk of committing a offence as you had the option to move to the outside lane to overtake. Moving from the inside lane to the middle lane and then to the outside lane to overtake a car in the middle lane is classed as a higher risk than staying in the lane you in (inside lane)

Really easy for me to fix when it breaks, things that I have had to replace twice are the drop links because my city's roads are full of potholes but they are super cheap. Tax is a quite high on the 206 sport though, think its £165 which just is not what I expected when I bought it but honestly the best car ever I absolutely love mine!

as someone who is driving a sportscar on the motorway daily... the lorry lane (sidelane) is dangerous because the lane is completely ran down, and the grooves on the road can take over my steering and throw the back of the car all around... so even when i just stick to 70 with cruise control, i usually stick to the middle/inside lane... but of course if i see anyone coming like a madman behind me, i will take my leave to the side lane without a question...

Europe is wild to me as an American. My insurance is $78 USD a month for my Camry. Gasoline is also much cheaper in the US and I get great mileage. On a tank I can go a theoretical 600 miles. Recently gas went up in price and all the dealerships near me are all basically sold out of the newer more fuel efficient cars. Recently a major car brand is introducing a 3cyl turbo gas car which is incredibly rare in the US. Horsepower also trips me up because on the low end most cars get about 200 at least and go up with larger cars or sports cars. Euro economy cars have much lower horsepower.

having worked in China I can confirm that the driving style leaves a lot to be desired. Not sure if it was due to the customer I was working for at the time but traffic meant nothing to any of the drivers, quite a few evenings I thought o we must be going a different route today back to the hotel when there was a que in the turning lane then the driver would just cut in at the front of the que. Nearly every day we saw a crash on the way to the factory and a personal highlight was being driven through the centre of a local market. The most commonly used phrase was "who's bravest goes first" and "the problem comes when both people are brave"

28:00 with regards to the Ship of Theseus paradox... I've often wondered how many Modifications you make to a car that the DVLA/Insurance company just gives up and brands it a kit car?! There must be a point where it is nolonger the car it was and is now a new beast!!
@Robert_B_4452 жыл бұрын
There's a points system IIRC. This means that your car in stock form has a particular amount points (can't remember the exact figure) If you perform a major modification (I'm talking about engine swaps, gearbox swaps, suspension mods, reshelling, etc...) will reduce this number of points. The number of points varies depending on the modification. It's worth noting that if you perform another major modification, the points will be reduced again If the number of points gets low enough, the DVLA will decide that your car is now a kit car That's my understanding of the basics of it anyway

I would probably feel the same about my car being messed with / stolen as taking it to the dealership for service 😄
@silverperzon3 жыл бұрын
I never understood the whole, not feeling a connection with a car ever again or "dirty feeling" after it had been stolen thing. Personally had a couple stolen within the family and almost all the time we did everything in our power to get them back. It's not the car's fault for getting stolen. If the thieves made a mess of the interior or exterior, clean it up to the best of your ability and drive on. (So long as it wasn't totaled in a wreck) If you really love a car, keep it, repair it if feasible, and make it so it doesn't get stolen again. I suppose I have more of an emotional attachment to some of my vehicles but, I won't pass on/sell a car after all the memories I had with it even if it was recovered from a theft situation. I understand it might not be worth it, paperwork wise, but I'm not one that's concerned with resale value. So long as the car is in good mechanical nick and passing it's yearly test, I can live with a salvage title if it ever came down to that. Best regards from someone/'s family who had the same cars for 10-19 yrs and have been stolen a grand total of 3 times. (Most of the time they only take the wheels, cats, or the sound system and then ditch car somewhere.) I should also add, if the car was used as a lethal weapon during it's theft, only then will I release it from ownership.. It's just the correct thing to do in that particular circumstance.

You can book them in for a driving test, or even some lessons. Even if they fail the test it doesn't matter, they can't lose the licence but it might just be an interesting experience.

Id have suggested a Citroen C2 code for the bloke at uni. Cheap to insure, cheap to run, parts are stupidly common and its reasonably nippy at 120 odd bhp. My first year of insurance was £950 no box

Something I was told a number of years ago, apparently, a vehicle is only insured between the number plates - so if your hanging it in the windscreen your technically not insuring your front end. Not sure if its true or not, but its a good scare tactic if it isnt!

@Do One I dont want to sound like "that guy" but do you have proof of that? Only reason I ask is when I was younger and used to chuck the plate in the window, there were a number of times I got stopped by the police and told to secure it to the front bumper. Kinda makes me think otherwise :/

I wish I was in the debate about ethans thought experiment, as I believe that the time period in which things are replaced is what causes the identity to change or remain the same. As the ship in his example had wood replaced this would have been over years and years meaning the replaced panels would have been worn to the point at which it becomes the original ship. On the other hand if we come to a car that is being built in a year and has all new panels new engine and the only original piece is part of the shell, this is where something has been lost it may be a part of the original car but its lost part of its soul.

~1000 pound for an MX-5 is so good, in Australia there's nothing under $10,000

Sinking the Vitara in a Cesspool is all fine and dandy but if somebody opens the door and goes through the glovebox it’s off to the scrap yard Lol.

Hey guys love the podcast, keep up the great work! Is it weird that i have a bad gut feeling towards my car if I'm riding shotgun whilst my car is being driven by someone... It's like i have been betrayed by my car somehow, but it all works out after i get back in it and take it for a joy ride (sometimes get the bad gut feeling starting up the car and the first few Kms i drive it)
