Would definitely love to see a video of you guys retaking your test. That could be very entertaining. Maybe all these bad habits you guys seem to talk about could picked up, especially Ethan jumping red lights 😉 (which I've definitely done before. Not the same thing, but I've definitely, accidently, ran a red light 😖). Also, on the creeping forward thing, I agree with the emailer. When I see a stationary car move forward less than foot, it just think "whhhy? Just stop". I also really appreciate Barney's email. I have recently been trying improve my driving by slowing down a bit, making better decisions, giving myself, and everyone else more room, and having a little more patience, especially if someone fucks up. We all make mistakes. However, I've always been patient and I wait for the right time to over take a cyclist. I don't give a toss about people having to wait, or myself for that matter. One of my biggest pet peeves is people over taking on a corner or on the brow of a hill.

About those "creepers" The ones I understand the least are the ones who creep over the stopping line until their car is almost half over the line already. It's, like, why? The light's still red. You're not getting anywhere faster like this. Just fucken wait. If there's a red light camera, it might even get you for entering the intersection while the light is red.

One big reason for Electronic Parking Brakes is the fact that everyone can apply the same amount of braking effort. It doesn't matter if you are Arnold Schwarzenegger or an elderly woman. If it was a manual handbrake, the old lady might only lift it a couple of clicks and the bodybuilder might lift it too much and damage the system (stretch the cables, etc).

I’ve set up quite a few temporary traffic lights for roadworks and a common reason for all lights being stuck on red is that if a car jumps a red light the system reacts by turning all the other lights red, and then tries to reset to its programmed sequence, but when the lights are far away from each other or there is no line of sight, they cannot reconnect to each other and cannot reset

On the creeping forward at lights, sometimes its to stop the stupid auto start/stop. Admittedly I've done it a few times when I didn't want to disable the start/stop, but I knew the lights were going to change in a few seconds, so I stop a little short of the lights (less than a car length) and creep forward a bit.

In Tasmania, Australia I noticed a dip in driving quality even though we didn't really have a lockdown just heavy restrictions, just more of an heavy encouragement to work from home and avoid going out. But I agree, driving modern cars are mind numbing, I have driven my mums 2020 Hyundai Tucson (Auto) and its just so mind numbing vs my manual BRZ. Having a manual car is so more engaging and forces you to focus on the road.

Other reasons why industry implemented electronic parking brakes instead of traditional one, except cost reduction through DfM and create an environment for autonomy that Gareth mentioned, are(that I could think of): -packaging space: this can also be related to cost reduction but also saving space in the center console area and also allowing for more modern trim parts design for interior. -Gareth mentioned less parts but it is also less movement between parts, wear which is mechanical and therefore in resulting in less need of maintenance; however, there are some cars where either electronic module/switch /calipers with actuators fail, which could overall result in a more expensive solution than traditional one due to the price of expensive electronic parts. Love for JLR! -

Regarding Jeremy's question, I recently asked myself the same question. I'd been driving (and fixing) a 1997 Fiesta for 10 years and decided to replace it with something more modern. So a couple of weeks ago I bought a 2013 Citroën C1. I did spend £4k for a top of the range model with low miles and service history, but there are loads out there (not to mention Peugeot 107s and Toyota Aygos, too) for less money. They're cheap to insure and fuel (easily 50+ mpg) and after 2012 road tax is free.

I came to a massive factor that Gareth almost hit with electronic handbreak. As we all know for years have been getting lighter due to keeping efficiency up for regulations globally. When you look at the weight of a mechanical over electronic handbreak the weight saving is massive. Hence electronic handbreaks.

This may offend most guys, but being an avid listener & follower of Scotty Kilmer, the straight forward answer to why Electronic parking brakes are becoming increasingly popular amongst car makers, it's cheaper to manufacture and the bean counters push it. Also if a Electronic parking brake fails it is more expensive to fix as well as it involves sensors.

@MrSteveBertone
@MrSteveBertone 3 жыл бұрын
The blue light flashing middle lane hoggers, works in a couple of ways, one it makes them move but two it shows they’re paying attention, between the blue lights starting up, to the car moving shouldn’t be a long time.. if the car doesn’t react the driver clearly isn’t paying attention to the road. Flashing will likely only aggravate or scare the driver ahead, meaning they’ll stay where they are to annoy you or move out of panic. Many years ago a was taking to a policeman at around 2am at a services, we talked about speed, he said if I was doing 80/ 85 and he was behind me, if I braked gently or moved out of the way slowing towards the speed limit, they’d be more likely leave me alone, as it shows I was alert to what’s happening around me (so long as my driving was safe and not erratic) so I would think the same applies to blues and twos to move middle lane hoggers

Back in January there were temporary lights set up and it was snowing. My lights were on red and I had a car sitting behind me. At the other end were three cars waiting and I could see the red light reflecting on the front of the car at the other end. Eventually after about two minutes I put on my hazards and went through the red. I stopped at the other end and explained to the guy in front that there was snow on the sensor and I watched in my mirror as the three cars also went through the red. If you do it slowly and with due care then it shouldn't be an issue.

What are you gonna do when (if) Gareth ever sells that bloody M4? It’s been the gift that keeps on giving so far. You guys keep on recommending the 130i but prices are going up at the mo, any for around £3.5k will be bloody dogs. The 125i is a good shout and is easily remapped to 130i power.

Probably the most "thought out" episode of Car Throttle that I've seen so far - particularly in relation to "inexplicable" behaviours such as driving through red traffic lights. I did the *exact* same thing that Ethan said happened to him once, and then questioned "why did I just do that?" These are my thoughts on this: I think that there's a subconscious human *need* to exercise our sense of autonomy now and again - particularly if you've spent your entire life being "controlled" (ie through "rules", legislation, arbitration, etc.) Sooner or later - particularly if someone questions a matter but receives no satisfactory explanation as to _why_ (in this case, I mean the forced ignoring of your own common sense), then eventually, the "act" begins to drop, and decisions such as exercising your own autonomy to make decisions based on your own lived experiences, will inevitably kick in. I may have mentioned this before here, but there is a difference between _driving,_ and _travelling_ (as far as common law may be concerned). This may have something to do with it... Existing under common law, requires no driving licence, MOT, motor insurance, REGIStration etc. Whilst it might not necessarily be a _legal_ requirement (it is certainly _lawful),_ it might be worth considering using a bond (such as your birth certificate (it's printed on bonded paper)) to fall back on, should you genuinely be involved in a collision to which you are responsible. Do you think it would be a good idea in your next produced podcast to discuss the freeman philosophy and motoring in general? The standards of motoring may very well (gradually) begin increasing again, when the motoring *community* work together, to address all motoring related affairs, that directly involve US as motorists, rather than the "Do this, don't do that, go this speed, don't drive through that"-type existence that we live through on a daily basis - causing REAL problems with each other on the road? Many thanks.

I think the standard of driving is dropping not down to lack of training / test but more on people in general having less respect for each other.

Automatic handbrake in the winter sucks, during colder periods talking like -10C and below they allways freeze up during the night.

@Ross Bourne Mechanical handbrake is not automatic. I can choose not to pull it, but if the electronic one goes on automatically I dont really have an option do I?

Electronic handbrakes are the worst Too many parts and switches and motors that was somehow replacing some metal cable in a plastic tube that does EXACTLY the same job

The electronic handbrake on the older Insignia really is the most stupid handbrake I’ve ever experienced. In comparison to the VWs or Mercedes I’ve driven it doesn’t turn on automatically - not even when the car gets parked...

Similar incident happened to me with e handbrakes, with a hire car we had. Pulled the car onto the drive, went inside, came out to find the car not on my drive, but on my neighbors drive opposite.
