This skit is hilarious! I recently had an surprise retirement party thrown for me. Not that I couldn't do it for myself and invited the same people. I enjoyed my time in the military. It was a choice I chose to do. I did not expect the party or the gifts. I told people who showed up that their presence was my present. Only because I have been blessed to do what I enjoyed doing. My present for me was to retire and not have to work if I don't want to work.

It depends on the occasion because if you know the person is truly struggling don't invite them if you're going to expect anything but their presence 🤷.... Sometimes people truly invite people just because they bring so much joy wherever they go and that's undervalued way to much

This thread right here. When I was a younger and single mother, I was invited to two events that I know I intended to bring gifts but forgot to. The first time, I said I was going to swing by the store and grab a card on the way there, but my route did not take me by the dollar king And I didn’t see one closer to their house on the way so when I got there I remembered that I forgot to stop. The second one, I think I just didn’t get a chance to shop before the event or I purchased the gift and left at home. I’m at least 30 minutes one way from most of the events my friends have and so I probably left it at home early in the morning and had all kinda errands to do and that event was in the afternoon and then I remembered that I forgot to pack it. They each got a gift after the event but the first one said something about it, tho not to my face. Because some people are adults and not grown. I’ve learned that some people are more like this and I am more like ” your presence is the present“. I’ve had events when no one showed up or very few. Having those experiences at a younger age make me grateful when people take the time to show up even if they come “empty-handed“. I can always get a gift or a card, but your time is something you can never get back and I value that adding extremely high level than I do objects. Since then I have learned to be extra conscious of having a gift/card when I walk through the door. You never know how some people are thinking or feeling if you don’t and I don’t want to leave a bad impression. Also, I am not eating all that much food. I’ll get something and maybe one or two wings and you know an extra glass of beverage. Not 2,3 and 4 and I’m certainly not taking anything home unless stuff is being packed up at the end and I am specifically being offered to take the things home. Gift or not. That’s just greedy and distasteful.

I am one of those that will stay home and not go to anything I'm invited to however I am also that one that they typically beg to come because I have a way of keeping the gathering going and if there's any discussions that get to heated I have a way of cooling them down so if they want me to come I'm not bringing anything and that's already a known fact however if they really are needing something in particular and they tell me then yes I will bring that and that's if I go because they're normally calling me even the day of trying to make sure and beg for me to be there I typically don't like social gatherings so it takes a lot for me to go in the first place

Warning. Dissertation 😆. While I understand that this was fine for comedic value, I must disagree. When my husband and I got married we didn't do a registry nor did I do a bridal shower because we wanted people to come and not feel like they couldn't because perhaps they couldn't afford it. It was the saddest thing when I went to a wedding and no one showed because they did not agree with the marriage. She got lots of gifts but no one showed and she cried. The lady at the venue felt so bad for her that she gave her some of her money back. The money they spent on the event could've been used for a private trip or what have you. At the end of the day I want people to celebrate with me. For birthdays and everything else I ALWAYS emphasize please come. I don't care if you bring a gift. If I can't afford the festivities and people to come eat and be merry then I won't have an event. My job ended up throwing me a surprise bridal shower because they just couldn't believe I genuinely just wanted people to celebrate with me. I've been in situations where I couldn't afford to go and was embarrassed to say I couldn't afford to buy a gift and the person was upset with me for not going. I've also been in places in my life where I remember not being able to afford gas as a single mom to get to an event and was ashamed to say so and the person was upset. On the flip side of that one of my good friends and I formed a relationship because when she met me she was touched by something I had said just at a friend's house. She was insistent that I go to her bridal shower. For some reason I felt comfortable telling her I couldn't afford a gift. She told me to come and gave me a gift from one of the door prizes. Once I got into a better position there was nothing that I wouldn't do for her whenever she called upon me. She passed away but I still cherish our friendship simply because my gift to her was my preference. I understand that I am one of the few that feel this way so I won't go to events unless I am very close to the person and choose to get them a gift later if it is not in my budget at the time.

I’m sorry about your friends passing 😪😪 But I agree with you. My family is the same way. They DON’T care about gifts or money when they invite you to something. They literally just want you there to enjoy their event. I, too, was a single mom and couldn’t afford a lot. But then you get some folks who get upset if you come empty handed. It’s a tough one cuz some ppl don’t care, but then you got those who ONLY care about the gifts.

It's really awful how people want to shame you for your financial situation. People interpret you being rude because you're trying to avoid an embarrassing situation but at the end of the day you know what your finances are and if they want you to bring a gift then they need to do something to help you make more money. If they won't do that, then they need to understand and not be petty. Celebrate the people you are celebrating because at the end of the day if tragedy were to strike, you're not worried about that gift. You're grieved about the last thing you said or thought about someone you thought was too cheap.
