With gratitude and understanding, we share with you today answers to some of the questions we have received regarding Phabeni's passing and the related events. Thank you for your patience. This has been a difficult time as we did not expect Phabeni's death. Death is certainly nothing you can ever be fully prepared for. And it is something that we all deal with in our own way. Our media team have done their best to reply to as many questions as possible, but we do receive a countless amount of comments, for which we are grateful, as we know the majority of our followers here care deeply about the elephants, and orphans like Phabeni. Like you, we want what is in the best interest of the elephants. Adine and Owen took time to talk to you here, to share their minds and hearts in depth, so that we might all learn, heal and grow together.

I truly hope you are not being criticized for how Phabeni’s healthcare was handled. It was always clear to me that you were constantly seeking the best options from all available sources of expertise. What I learned from this sad experience is how fragile a young, motherless elephant actually is. They appear sturdy, yet are quite vulnerable. Thank you for your exceptional love and care of the little bull. Continued success in your work with HERD. This is a calling not many could handle. ❤

My thoughts exactly. It breaks my heart listening to them “explain” why they couldn’t save Phabeni. Adine is always far more diplomatic than I would be under these circumstances. Let’s discuss the obscenity of carved ivory elephants on necklaces and earrings. Everyone at HERD is obviously committed to providing safe, enriching, enjoyable spaces for these beings we have hunted to the point of extinction. They recognize that they are SENTIENT beings and treat them as such. The level of heartbreak I hear in their voices, when they speak of the elephant family members that they’ve lost, is almost unbearable. With Phabeni, a child was lost. We weren’t there when he took his last breath. They were. My god…😢😔

Agreed! I’ve read the comments about Phabeni, as a way to help process the loss of him, and to see the outpouring of love and support. However, among those comments, were plenty of triggered people projecting their own issues and perceptions onto this organization. It’s never ever gonna be perfect, and some patience and willingness to understand that wild animal rescue is messy, complicated AND complex, is foundational to being *humble* in the face of human-caused destruction and suffering of our family-of-life. I have seen that everyone working here is full of Grace, patience, humility, and humanity- again, never perfect, as there is no such thing. Easy to criticize from the comfort of an armchair, easy to be a keyboard warrior, infinitely harder to actually do the work of a calling like this.

Concern and questions are not necessary negative criticism. I have a few friends who work for non profit organizations in different parts of the world. and they do have to explain to their supporters what is going on and give regular updates. It’s a way to be transparent when an organization is fully funded by its supporters. They provide updates in form of in-person meetings, financial updates etc. My friends said it’s important for maintenance of trust of the work they do for the supporters. Unfortunately besides being motherless his immune system was likely constantly working trying to heal the broken hip bone. So new challenges were adding to the stress in his body. They are doing the right thing by providing additional and follow-up information.

@@bridgetsclama I whole heartedly agree. Humans are still learning about ellies. Elephants are complex, these carers devote their lives to them. And the rule of nature is survival of the fittest even in the safest environment. This was not a failure, it was the best chance an orphaned baby had to survive. Given that Phabeni was not born into the herd, the decision to protect the herd and the carers from further stress was logical.

@non.8994 I was not comparing the aims of the two organizations but rather the difficulties in raising the orphan babies. Dame Daphne Sheldrick was an amazing woman but if you have followed her story for years as I have you know there were many failures at raising orphans in the beginning and even today success is not assured. As I understand the elephants at HERD were moved there from Zimbabwe because their existence was threatened. Different situations, different goals but same challenges raising baby elephants.

They come to you in deep trauma and whether they make it or not, they will not get any better care or more love from any other place. And that counts for everything. Please don't feel bad over the loss of Phabeni. Phabeni died surrounded in love and not out in the bush alone.

To everyone at HERD, thank you for this video . I can see the toll it took on you, Adine, to make it. In fact I cried along with you as many of your followers probably did also. I still can't believe the little bull is gone. He brought so much joy and laughter to those of us who follow you regularly. There was not one second that I thought you didn't move heaven and earth to save his life. I can see how much you are still grieving for Phabeni and the carer you lost so suddenly. That was a one. two punch on the gut. I wanted to have a piece of Phabeni in my home do I ordered a picture for my wall in my bedroom of Phabeni and Khanysia together. I also ordered a mug with Setombe, Klaserie and Phabeni together. I also have items with Fenya on them as well. One last thing, after Phabeni passed away, I had a dream he came to play with me. I loved him dearly and miss him, but I will have momentoes of him and eventually I will be able to smile when I think of him.❤

One thing I know above all else, Phabeni knew he was loved. He did not die alone, he was surrounded by both elephant and human love. No stone was left unturned to help him survive. Life is a precious gift and no one can predict how long that gift will last. Phabeni was a wonderful gift to all of us and although his life was short, he made a huge impact on all our hearts, especially Setombe's. He also has helped all who will come after because of the knowledge Adine and the other human members of HERD have accrued from this very difficult and heartbreaking situation.

Adine & Owen….this video was heart-wrenching and must have been so difficult to make. Anyone in the world who has followed your journey, even for one day, sees the love and dedication that you all at herd have for these magnificent elephants. There will be always questions as to why certain things happen and, yes, it’s human nature to try to learn and prevent it from happening again. Knowledge is a wonderful and useful thing. However, Nature, sometimes, has a harsh way of reminding us that we’re not always the one in charge. Little Phabeni taught us all, that very lesson. He was probably here for much longer than maybe he was supposed to be, thanks to all of your knowledge and nurturing. But in his short time here ,he was happy and surrounded by not only his own kind but by so many others, who loved and cared for him until nature told him his work here was done. And oh, what a wonderful job he did!

I can't imagine how painful it is to raise and lose baby elephants. You mentioned Sheldrick Trust and even they, with all their experience lost babies. But the fact that you and they and other rescue groups still forage ahead and do everything you can to give these beautiful orphans a second chance is simply amazing and awesome. It must be heartbreaking when you lose one, but then you look at Khanyisa and all the damage that poor baby had and most might have given up on her, and yet there she is, living with her new family and looking happy and healthy. It takes a special kind of person to keep going through this and you have no need to feel like you need to explain to anyone what happened. Yes we are concerned and miss Phabeni and the others, but I"m sure we all know you did the very best you could and no one could ask for more.
