Your video is spot on with regard to running a fridge on inverter. Doing it requires a good sized battery bank and solar too. I have a truck camper with 300 watts of solar, a 2000 watt inverter and two AGM Group 31s. Fridge draw is similar when running on inverter power... about 28 amps DC. Prior to major charging upgrades from the truck camper, I almost always arrived at my campsite with nearly depleted batteries when running the fridge on inverter power. The warmer the outside temp is, the more the fridge would run, and the more depleted my batteries would be at the end of the drive. The 300 watts of solar with an MPPT controller, combined with the minimal DC charge from the truck (through 12 AWG wire) wasn't sufficient to support the fridge. I installed the inverter in 2010 not long after buying the camper. Solar came along in 2011. I started using invertwer opwer for the fridge right after installing the inverter. I have a Link10 amp hour monitor to track the actual state of charge of the batteries (it's similar to a Victron BMV712) My general technique was to switch off the inverter at some point during my drive so the batteries would recharge some the rest of my drive. If I was going to a place with shorepower, I didn't care if the batteries were nearly depleted upon arrival. The factory wiring through the 7 pin RV cable is only 12AWG on most trucks. With the voltage drop, it simply won't charge enough to keep up with the fridge. About 5 years ago I finally upgraded the charging cable size between the truck and camper. The same upgrade could also be accomplished with a towable RV, by routing cabling along the truck frame back to the hitch. I did a video on that upgrade: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIuwgqNreKyWiKc&

Many of the larger Fifth wheels and motorhomes run the fridge off the inverter. The truck on the first and the engine on the second keep the batteries charged. They are equipped with high output (200+ amps) generators or alternators. I put a 220 amp on my Suburban years ago.

Will the truck alternator charge the RN batteries while driving? If so why not run the inverter to run the fridge while driving? Won’t the alternator make up what’s used on the tv battery?
@Nonplused6 жыл бұрын
A good rule of thumb is that if your fridge isn't already a 3-way (propane/ac/12 volt) it's probably too big to run on 12 volts, even with an inverter. It doesn't cost the manufacturer much to add the 12 volt capability so if it isn't there it probably won't work well. All they need to add is a 12 volt heating element (cheap). So if it doesn't have a 12 volt option built in the fridge is probably too big to run on 12 volt power. Running a propane/ac fridge off an inverter takes a lot of battery power. Even if you say the fridge is only on half the time and it takes 30 amps (at 12volts) that's 15 amp hours per hour of travel. Since the most common battery setup people use is 2 - 100 amp hour batteries, giving 100 amp hours of usable capacity, that only gives about 6.5 hours of run time before the batteries are considered totally discharged. Of course while the vehicle is running about 10 amps will be fed from the alternator but not much more than this, and if you have solar you'll probably get at least 5 amps on sunny days, so in theory it's doable without draining the batteries if the vehicle is running most of the time. It would work much better if you have a house fridge because the compressor system is much more efficient than the ammonia system, which is why that's what you find when propane operation isn't necessary. What we do to skirt the problem is keep the freezer door full of frozen water bottles. When we are ready to travel we transfer 3 of the frozen bottles to the fridge and leave the other 3 in the freezer. It seems to work pretty good, never had the milk or anything go bad this way, or anything defrost in the freezer. Also helpful is to keep the fridge well stocked with your favorite beverage (cans of pop, beer, etc.) as these will also absorb a lot of heat before stuff starts going bad. But for this strategy to work everything must be fully cooled before traveling. I'm lucky because I have RV storage at home, so I just plug in a few days before we plan to leave and cool everything off and freeze the water bottles. But we seldom travel more than 6-8 hours at a time and we live in the north, I don't know how well this strategy would work for a long trip through Texas in the summer. We also have one of those 12 volt coolers. What I've found is that they aren't useful if you don't have shore power. Even though in theory it runs on batteries, it draws about 5 amps, and it doesn't cycle so it's 5 amps all the time. I have 300 watts of solar but if it's cloudy or we are parked in the trees the cooler will still kill the batteries in a couple of days. So I load it up and cool it down while plugged in before we leave and then we transfer frozen water bottles from the freezer to keep it cool too. We don't put anything in it besides beverages so there is nothing to spoil. Our cooler is a semi-conductor style, I understand there are 12 volt compressor models which are much more efficient, but they are also much more money. Also to be understood about semi-conductor coolers and fridges is that they just don't last long under continuous use. I had a semi-conductor beer fridge that lasted about 2 years. I also tried using a 12 volt cooler at home as a beer fridge and it was actually smoking in about 1 year. So I don't recommend them. I actually bought a second cooler of the same model as the one that went up in smoke for the trailer but it was on sale for $40, otherwise I wouldn't have as I knew it wouldn't last long, but so far because it only runs a couple weeks a year it's holding up. It only runs when we have shore power or while driving (the alternator can run it).
@Nonplused6 жыл бұрын
Oh and another tip I forgot, before leaving home we always dump all the ice in the home ice maker in a bag and put that in the freezer or some in the cooler too. The ice maker is always full again when we get home. So if you have an ice maker at home, take the ice with you. All of it, those things need to be cleaned out once in a while. Also you then have ice cubes for drinks while it lasts.

Great video! Question….how is an RV Residential Refrigerator/ Freezer powered in a large 5th wheel trailer? Assume is is powered off an inverter when camping, and directly off AC when in a park with power. Is there an AC receptacle behind the fridge? How would you turn off the fridge / freezer without just turning off the power to the entire RV? (Ours is parked permanently at an RV park and we’d like to shut the fridge / freezer off during off season - but leave power on trailer……).

We have a Gerard Model GSWH-2 tankless water heater and had the same problem with hot water shutting off when we added cold water and found out the aerator wasn't allowing sufficient water flow. I would make sure the water control valve located on the rear of the water heater is set on max flow and then try the shower without the shower head and even another faucet with the aerator off and see if you can add cold water. If so, water flow is your problem. Making a larger hole in the plastic aerator fixed the problem. Also thought about adding a shower head that had water shut off lever like outside shower, but stopping water flow shuts off the propane, so forget that idea. You might need the change your shower head too.
@AllAboutRVs6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Carl for your comment, glad to see other solutions out there for the water heater. We have tried all kinds of situations and combinations, we've replaced shower heads and aerators and tested with different water pressure and flows from RV parks. Using just the hot water side allows us to consistently have the proper temp of water. The problem we ran into is the flow could change at any park and drilling out the aerator will make it hard to conserve water when boondocking. Setting our temp and just using hot water allows us to have those options. We usually leave the water control valve fully open except when we have been in areas with extremely low temps that we had to restrict it by partially closing the valve to get it to a usable temp.
@swabbievet6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply and sorry solutions didn't work for you, but it is no big deal to adjust the temperature to your liking.

@@AllAboutRVs and Carl May: The problem is that the Girard requires at least 0.9 gallons per minute to switch on and fire up the burner. That's a fair amount of water flow -- especially in an RV where water _conservation_ is usually the goal. The Truma only requires a flow rate of 0.4 gpm -- less than half as much as the Girard.
@swabbievet6 жыл бұрын
@@Milesco There is water waste waiting for the cold water to turn hot, but while boondocking I would use a pitcher to collect the cold water and use for cooking, coffee, etc., instead of going into the gray tank.
@Milesco6 жыл бұрын
@@swabbievet : Yeah, definitely. That's a common boondocking hack. I, too, would never let precious fresh water just go straight into the grey tank! But as for tankless water heaters, I would definitely spend the extra bucks and get a Truma. Eat a can of tuna, try to pet a puma, take the 3:10 to Yuma, and then get a Truma.

Please help if you know the answer !! Thanks.

Great, helpful video! All the topics were very informative. But you confused me when you started mixing terms about battery capacity and state of discharge. You said, "bringing your batteries down to 50% or to 80%..." Did you really mean 50% or 20%? Your batteries start out at 100% charge capacity, then they go to 90%, 80%, 70%, 60% 50%. Wouldn't going lower than 50% eventually get you to 20% of charge capacity? In other words, 80% discharged?
@AllAboutRVs6 жыл бұрын
Great question I could see how that was confusing. You described it right as far as charge capacity but I was talking about depth of discharge (DOD). So 80% DOD is 80% down with only 20% of capacity left in the battery. I don’t usually recommend going that low but I know there are some AGM battery manufacturers that state they can safely go that low and I know many people do. My hope was to help those that go that low or even to 50% understand that the battery shouldn’t stay at that level for long. The sooner you start charging it the better it is for the battery. The longer you wait to charge the battery the more damage is done to the battery.

I am curious as to why people don't just leave the propane running on the fridge when traveling if they have a two or three way unit. I have done so for years amounting to well over 100,000 miles plus over the last 12 years and never had an issue. The propane used is negligible and the fridge stays cold, both in the north and when in Arizona heat at over 100 F. I have a mid to full size fridge with a two way, 120 or propane fridge. I put the switch on auto and leave it there. it switches to shore power when connected seamlessly.

The plate covers the bottom, goes up the back and covers the top. The front edges are secured with 3 plastic rivets across the front of the bottom and 3 plastic rivets across the front of the top. The back is secured with 8 bolts, Is this repairable or should I start looking for a replacement? If it is repairable should I remove the plate from the freezer to clean it up and repaint it or should I clean it up in place and repaint it. Is there a recommended paint to use?

3000W is 25A at 120V, 250A at 12V. Look up the ABYC chart on wire gage for 12V loads. Then go one size bigger for max performance. Just a few questions based on your experience with the tank-less water heater: 1. What is the amp hour (ah) rate if you left the controller on all the time? Should have just asked amp hour rate what is it? 2. When you shower is the full flow of the hot water valve being used (40-45 lbs) or do you use less than full flow on the hot?....since you don't use the cold at all when showering 3. Is there a difference between using a RV park water versus the RV water pump in terms of hot water use and flow? Thanks:)
@AllAboutRVs6 жыл бұрын
The tankless water heater is propane but does use a very very small amount of 12volt for the electronics and auto ignite. I'm not sure the exact draw but it is is very very small well under half an amp. We definitely like the parks with higher water pressure. It feels the same amount of pressure using full hot compared to a mix of hot and cold but that would depend more on your specific shower valve than the water heater. The heater does have a valve to adjust the flow of water to help set the proper temp but it's almost always open all the way up. It also works just as well on the pump as at an RV Park.

New to Full Timing and brand new to KZbin. Love your channel! Here is an absolute novice question and please don't roll your eye balls at me! LOL. What is the difference between an inverter and converter and will we need both before hitting the road? We already know we will be upgrading from 30 amp to 50 amp soon, because right now ALL the appliances and outlets are on one fuse/socket? and we are constantly tripping the breaker, so we want to separate the appliances and outlets.
@AllAboutRVs6 жыл бұрын
No eye rolling here, good question. I have a video on converters and it gives a quick description of the difference between the 2. Converters will convert the AC 120Volt shore power when you plug in your RV to 12V DC power to power things like the lights, slides, fans, and charge your batteries. The inverter does the opposite when you are not plugged into shore power. It Inverts the power in your Batteries from 12 Volt DC to 120 Volt Ac so you can use things like an electric coffee maker or TV when you are off the grid. Your RV will already have a converter but usually, the stock ones aren't good for your batteries. Not everyone uses an Inverter, it depends on what type of RVing you want to do, how often you will be without hookups. I'm planning an Inverter video soon.

Propane refrigerators use heat to power the cooling system, my experience is that using electricity to generate heat will run your batteries down in no time--hooked to the alternator of the vehicle though while driving you can probably get away with it, but don't use the batteries, cycling them up and down for refrigeration will wear them out quickly

Cheap monitors only measure voltage, which isn't very precise because the voltage doesn't vary very much between full and empty. The better and more expensive monitors use what's called "coulomb counting" - measuring the actual amount of electricity going in and out of the batteries.

I have a 2023 Keystone 5th wheel, and my residential frig isnt staying cold while I tow. They said to turn off batteries while driving so inverter kicks in. Is this correct? I'm about to take a long trip and CW says it's all working properly.

Hi. How big is your inverter to run your frig. I have an Imagine with a 6 cubic foot frig and 1 battery. I would like to run my frig as I am driving down the road. Then would be hooked up to full service

I would like the option of running my fridge from the batteries. Thinking it might would save some propane ?
@exjw86234 жыл бұрын
you said your frig drew 30 amps. that is over 7000 watts. can you clarify that? did you mean amp hours? if so that would make more sense.
@AllAboutRVs4 жыл бұрын
30 amps from the batteries when it’s using the inverter. 30 amps 12v DC and close to 3 amps AC normally.

Actually, I was hoping you had an answer involving Inverter refrigerators in new RV's. A fellow worker just bought a new RV, and, it is NOT propane..rather Inverter (with 1 battery). He hasn't taken it out yet to see how long it will work. Personally, this idea makes no sense to me at all. Then I checked dealerships in the Houston area and discovered that most are Inverter refrigerators now. How would you boondock this way? Can you help me understand why this is?

Do you happen to know,,I ran my rv refrigerator when it was -20 degrees outside and it stopped working..all fuses good but will not work at all..between freezer and bottom half it gets very hot...

A smelly question: can you recommend a good toilet paper to use with a macerator system?
@AllAboutRVs6 жыл бұрын
We use rv specific toilet paper but we know that many people out there will say that you don’t have to as long as it is septic safe. The rv tp breaks down easily and we have never had an issue with using the macerator

I believe my battery charges when hooked up to my truck.
@scdreamers17645 жыл бұрын
You may want to check just how little it charges when engine is running. Mine is only an amp or two. I believe that circuit is for any trailer with electric brakes have a tiny battery for breakaway. More of a trickle charger only. Small wire diameter.

I’m running my frog on propane as I have only battery power. However when my battery dies my frog cuts off. Is there any way to keep it on once it’s lit if my dc batteries get to low?
@AllAboutRVs4 жыл бұрын
No the fridge requires 12v to continue functioning.

If i take off my power converter will my rv still work??
@AllAboutRVs5 жыл бұрын
You need a way to charge your batteries other wise the 12 volt system won’t work, no lights, heater, water heater, fridge, most things require a bit of 12 just to function. I usually recommend getting a good converter charger.
@santiagogarza47045 жыл бұрын
@@AllAboutRVs but im saying if i still keep my rv hokked up to 30 amp? Its cause my power converter its making a weird noise when the a/c is on but then i turn on one of any lights while a/c is on then that sounds shutts off
@AllAboutRVs5 жыл бұрын
No you still need a converter. It’s what converts the power from the 30amp AC to the 12volt DC. If you take it out and don’t replace it even if your plugged into shore power once your batteries die all the other things I mentioned won’t work anymore.
@santiagogarza47045 жыл бұрын

If you put too much PV current back into your batteries, you will boil them dry and they won't last long.

A normal 230volt fridge will cost around 1/2 of the price of a 12volt/230volt camper fridge. Why don’t I just buy a normal fridge for half the price and run in on my inverter? I have a 3000watt pure sine wave inverter by Victron Energy. And 400ah of battery and 540watt of solar. And I can also charge with the alternator while driving. Will a fridge running on the inverter draw more power from the battery compared to a 12volt fridge? If someone knows you’d be of great help! Thanks :)

Good afternoon I love your KZbin Channel and information you share. I have been interested in solar power on my last two rv's. But Been waiting on what I would like to think my final RV. Its a 2019 Pinnacle fifth wheel mid bunk. I am going to wait till my lead acid batteries fail then replace them with Battle Borne lithium. I really like the Victron Package you helped Marc and Trish with but didn't want to spend over 4000.00 or 5000.00 on a system. Currently I have a 1200 watt inverter that was already installed in my RV only hooked to the residential fridge circuit and are using three lead acid batteries. I also installed Microair soft starts on both 15K air conditioner units. I have two 2000 Honda inverter generators that I've used over the last 14 years they are awesome. I have a hookup on the roof of our unit for solar panels also.We are not full time Rving yet but do dry camp frequently. and are planning to travel full time soon. If I were to get a Battery monitor for now can I mount in the battery compartment rather that in the rv since victron has a phone app. to view reading. Its stays dry but not temperature controlled. I would like to talk more about solar with you at a later point. We live in south Louisiana and if you are ever in the area please let me know would love to meet you and your family.Good Bless you Guys and Safe Travels in you journeys.Sidney

I know this wasn't a monitor review video, but since you touched on it I'm curious if you have any thoughts on this monitor www.thornwave.com/products-btdcpm? It looks like it would work well and not require running wires for mounting a display in the trailer since it has Bluetooth built in with a mobile app. I could maybe even use it without an external shunt until I install an inverter.

if your alternator charges your house batteries then your fridge will be in the most part powered off your alternator as well...this will make the strain on your batteries next to non existent.
@AllAboutRVs4 жыл бұрын
True and I have found that about 400 watts of solar will balance out the fridge if your alternator isn’t charging enough to run it.
@patrickeh6966 жыл бұрын
Amps in and of itself is not an actual measure of electrical draw. One must know the AMPS and VOLTS.
@AllAboutRVs6 жыл бұрын
Yes Amps and Volts will get you the full picture to the watts but the batteries capacity is in amp hours. Watching your amps will tell you how much you have in your battery bank.
