I love my 19' 1970 O'Day Mariner. Almost everything on it is original and has held up over the years. One thing I like about this year is that it has a forward hatch (my kids loved to stick their heads out and look around), and wood trim on the coamings.

I had an O'Day DS II and took it sailing all over North and South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, lakes, big rivers, the Pamlico Sound. I courted my wife in that boat. I added hiking straps and one of my favorite memories is sailing with her on a moderate sized lake. We launched midmorning and because there was no wind, motored out to an island where we swam, sunbathed, and picnicked. After lunch the wind really piped up and we had one run across the lake where I was hiked out as far as I could get. I could see the centerboard below me. I was controlling both sheets while my future wife steered. The boat had some weather helm and she was screaming at the top of her lungs while I was yelling not to let it round up as we planed at seeming supersonic speed over the water throwing green water off the cutwater higher than the decks but still remaining dry. What a blast that was! I wanted to repeat the run but she had had enough. She married me anyway.

Hey Tim, I enjoy your videos. I didn’t see anything on the O’Day 37 cc. I currently own one and it meets nearly all your criteria for Bahamas sailing. Mine is an 85 less than 1000 hrs on the Westerbeke, bow thruster, elec. windlass, feathering prop, heat and AC, Full enclosure solar, dinghy davits, wind generator and excellent condition. I did pay a premium price but I would sooner buy a boat with everything I want than buy and install them. The boat easily gets 7+ knots with 11 or 12 kt’s. Of wind. Love the aft cabin. Much faster than I thought it would be. I sail on L.Huron and Georgian Bay. Cheers. If you are ever here in the summer come sailing. Steve

I bought an O'Day 19 in late fall of 2019. This past spring, I fully restored the exterior of the sailboat and learned a ton! Lots of fibreglassing and lots of sanding followed by a fresh coat of paint the entire boat over. What a huge difference! My wife and I spent the summer relearning how to sail and loved it. This coming spring we're going to electrify the boat so we can spend a few overnighters this coming summer. I'm going to install a single line reefing system as well to make reefing a whole sight easier. I can't wait to get through this winter and into the warmer weather! Great vid!

I just finished the Missouri River from Yankton to St Louis in my DS II this Spring. The Teton Adventurer cot fits perfectly in the cockpit floor, and with a boom tent you're good-to-go. A reefing main and a storm jib were an absolute must!

No way! I sail over in Yankton and grew up next town down, on the Missouri. What's your boat, how long did it take? My buddy did that same trip, homeade kayak in the 70s. Tool him a month. . . . I wondered about navigating those sandbars in a sailboat, some tight areas between Yankton and Ponca. I kayak a lot there too .

Awesome boat. I love the idea of a 25 foot trailer boat with a shallow draft, I think it would be ideal in the Florida keys while avoiding the hassle of having to find a Florida slip. How does she sail? Have you done any weekend cruising on her?

Hey Tim - I first came across your site over a year ago while researching the O'Day 25, which I eventually bought. I now have a season of sailing on Lake MI and Lake Huron behind me and am hooked. Happened across your channel again recently while beginning to explore the idea of longer passages and new adventures. I started watching from the beginning and am now caught back up to the "O'Day" episode. If you're ever going to be near Frankfort or St. Ignace (Michigan), would love to grab a beer with ya. Thanks for all the great content.

@@mattholley3642 I'm planning to head to Beaver Island and do portions of the North Channel (with her this summer, along with my wife and two kids (8 and 10). We've done single-night overnights on her in the past and it's a little tight but doable. Plenty of room for a week's worth of supplies. The boat doesn't have much tankage for fresh water so I'll plan on carrying some but also filtering lake water (which I've done when camping with no ill effects). I've made a bunch of upgrades and re-cored/glassed a section of the transom that was soft around the lower rudder mount. She's got a couple hundred watts of solar, wind instruments, a nice new chartplotter, auto tiller, and a large 230 Ahr Li battery. I also purchased a new mainsail and am super excited to see how she sails compared to the blown out original mainsail that came with the boat. Eventually, I'm planning to go bigger but the '25 is plenty capable. Love the shoal draft, encapsulated lead keel, and swing centerboard. She can be sailed with the centerboard up (as necessary), unlike swing keel boats.

Have to agree. An O'Day 25 leads my club's race fleet almost every year. He received first place once again in this year's series. Beautiful boat that I get to stare at all the time since it's two slips down from mine. Now that I'm racing my Catalina 25, I can tell you hands down that his is faster and more maneuverable - at least at this point (okay, his skill level obviously helps, too). I've also looked at a couple of Daysailors and really like the design for a dinghy. Would have been a great learning boat and racing would certainly be a blast.

Another great video. I have a 1979 O’Day 23 with a swing keel. The boat is solid and the hull gelcoat shines like it just came off the factory floor. By far the easiest boat to sail. Most likely going sell her as I don’t have the time with my other sailing ventures (crewing for racing and working with disabled Veterans). A friend also has a 27’ O’Day, another well made and solid boat.

Had the O'Day 25'...... I liked it... about the same time you made this video... For a boat built in the 1980's it seemed well constructed... Lived on it for a year until the marina was destroyed in a storm....while I was asleep on the boat... The storm literally destroyed the whole marina...and I didn't even realize it until I woke up the next morning and opened the hatch..and noticed the pier opposite mine parked on my outboard... But yeah...solid boat.. way more solid feeling than the Catalina '25 I had looked at... The Catalina '25 had nice lines but it really felt plasticy compared to the O'Day.. the O'Day looked a lot more modern for its age.. don't really know if Id recommend an outboard powered sailboat for open water coastal sailing but for a lake boat yeah... Everything about it just felt more solid compared to the Catalina 25.. like it was built to last....... They did a good job constructing it..

Yes "Uffa" Fox, Naval Architect, Isle of Wight in the UK. Lots of designs and plenty of books. I can very much see Uffa's touch on the O'Day, day sailor. I'm from Jersey, no not the island but the State and I learned about Uffa from my father, who like me is from Jersey. The large flat bottom Clorox bottle boats are taking his designs and enlarging them. For a day sailing racer I'm okay with that, but there in no way in hell I would want to be in a Beneteau in the weather SV Delos was in off norther Madagascar. give me something that sicks long and deep in the water.

I have thought of getting one and learning more about O-days, it would be interesting if you compared them to Catalina boats as trailer sailers. If you feel inclined, it would be great to hear your take on WindRider trimarans. I know its a little out of your normal cruising sailboats, but the Jim Brown design seems like a great compromise and fast trailer-sailer, at least until we can afford a Corse-Air folding trimaran .

What happened with the lead and water is that molten lead is quite hot. When water touches it, it boils and expands in volume exponentially, throwing molten lead everywhere. Water and any molten metal will do this.

Deck coring totally rotten, no reinforcements in the areas that have holes drilled . The glass has Massive voids and water tunnel tracks. The transom is very weak, the interior is poorly constructed and attatched. Water intrusion everywhere ! I have repaired all the issues and more, I wouldn't do it again. Macs where set up great with the being able to make it a sailboat or a powerboat. There queen size bed in the back mixed with a pop top made them the boat of the year. Design was a head of its time. Quality not do much. They brought more people into the sailing world than any boat made. Roger was a smooth operator in a good way. Great boat and you got what you paid for. Was not what I would call a real sailboat. However it sure fit the bill for a new sailer or someone that wanted a hybrid.
