If Sindarin is a quenya term, is that why it has the stress on the first syllable, like Finnish, rather than on the penultimate, as I would have expected the Sindarin language itself to have if it's based on Welsh?
@dreamingfifi
@dreamingfifi 7 жыл бұрын
In Quenya, stress falls on the penultimate syllable only if that syllable is the first syllable of the word or if it's heavy (ends in a consonant cluster, has a long vowel, or a diphthong). Sindarin's penultimate syllable is "da", which means that the stress falls on "Sin" instead.

I'm turning the textbook into an actual book that you can buy, so that's taken precedence over making videos.

There's a link to the textbook in the description box. At the moment the class is full, but I could put you on the waiting list in case someone drops out before the class starts.

What if I wanted to get a tattoo of The Riddle Stryder? I would rather have good transcription of it in common elvish writing. If not, I would probably just get it in English. Thanks!

Are you making a translation request? I'm not sure what you're asking for.

How much linguistic material are we lacking to translate The Hobbit into (neo)Sindarin? 50%? 60%? Any linguistic adventurers doing this yet?
@timomastosalo

It's safe to bet, way over 50%. Maybe try to find a Sindrin corpus, to get an idea. I don't know many sights to start the search, but Ardalambion is one page to start with. There are some links to other Tolkien fan pages.

You profess to be an expert in Sindarin, but you can't even get the pronunciation of "dh" right. The Sindarin "dh" has the value of /ð/ - this is the sound of the voiced "th" in English "the", "then", "that" (as opposed to the unvoiced "th" of "throw", "thing", "Thor"). It does not sound like an English "d".

Yes, I know the phonology of Sindarin, and I know that it has two interdental fricatives. When did I mispronounce /ð/? In my dialect, ð > θ / _#, so I have a hard time saying /ð/ at the ends of words, but an easy time of it at the beginning of a word or intervocalicly. I'm more surprised that you didn't pick up on the many many times I struggled with the rolled Rs - I just can't do those consistently.
@entwistlefromthewho
@entwistlefromthewho 8 жыл бұрын
Towards the start of the video it definitely sounds as if you're pronouncing "dh" as /dʰ/ rather than /ð/. Rolled Rs aren't such a propblem as many people struggle with them and a tapped R can almost always be used instead.
@dreamingfifi
@dreamingfifi 8 жыл бұрын
that's because I don't have a good microphone, and because of my bound tongue, I often end up making the interdental sounds postdental instead. I couldn't stick my tongue out until I was 14. Most English speakers can't hear the difference though. You have a pretty sharp ear! If you pay attention to the English parts too, you'll hear that and dark Ls appearing where they wouldn't normally.
