Amazing video! I do want to point out for those that might be wondering; The Arda Tengwa for /rh/ is only used in Sindarin Beleriand Mode. Where in that same mode, Óre Tengwa is use for /n/ and not /-r/. The /-r/ uses the Óre Tengwa in Sindarin General Mode. Different Modes Tengwa tend to(or are suppose to be) written separately and not borrowed from other modes(correct me if im wrong). But most, I included, still borrow from different modes but its still not good practice. Also Hwesta Sindarinwa Tengwa as /hw/ is only suppose to be used in Sindarin Beleriand Mode. That Tengwa doesnt exist in General Mode or Full Mode of Sindarin. Still good to learn of course as it is used in English Tengwar Modes aswell.

At 2.02 you say that 'dh' is pronounced 'der-h' - but in the Silmarillion, in Tolkien's own pronunciation guide, he states that it is pronounced 'th'. From the book - "DH is always used to represent the sound of a voiced ('soft') th in English, that is the th in then, not the th in thin. Examples are Maedhros, Aredthel, Haudth-en-Arwen" So, Maedhros would be pronounced "Mae-Eth-Ros". In Appendix E of LOTR, he elaborates further, and states that on occasion it may also be replaced with an n+r as in Caradhras (as in Caran-rass)

Just a note: The word *tengwar* on the video title is Quenya. It is the plural form of *tengwa* "letter", "sign" (a written sign), "token", "indicator" and refers to the Elvish letters themselves, which represent consonants and consonant clusters. The word *tehta* (plural *tehtar* ) is also Quenya and means "mark", "sign", "symbol", referring to those signs placed above a _tengwa_ to indicate a vowel sound which follows that consonant or consonant cluster. The Sindarin equivalent to those words are, respectively, *têw* (plural *tîw* ) "letter", "written sign" and *taith* (plural is the same as singular) "mark", "sign", "symbol". But, different from the Quenya mode, the Sindarin mode uses separate *tîw* ( *tengwar* ) for the vowels; so the *taith* ( *tehtar* ) are not used. However, outside the LotR mythos, there are people who write in Sindarin using an unofficial mode that uses the *taith* , with the difference that a *taith* placed above a *têw* indicates a vowel that precedes the consonant.

Probably because it has gemination (prolonged consonants), very common in Italian, and certain distinctively Welsh consonants, such as the lateral fricative [ɬ] and the dental fricatives, voiced [ð] and unvoiced [θ].

ok ok 1: Tengwar isn't a language its a writing system. He is speaking Neosindarin which is an elvish language that writes in Tengwar 2: No matter how fluent one is in a language they will never be native unless they spoke it sense they were like 4. Being native in a language means that you learned it when you where a baby. as for your question, it probably took him at least 3 if hes an experienced linguist... tbh tho hes probably been studying sense he was in highschool. most people that i speak to that speaks an elvish language have studied it sense they where in middle school just because they love the language

Also; The Yanta Tengwa for /i/ as shown in this video is only used in Sindarin General Mode. But its also an initial /i-/. Im Sindarin Beleriand Mode the Yanta Tengwa is a /e/. When you showed the Yanta as a /i/ I was pretty thrown off as I was expecting the Tengwa for Beleriand mode as the rest seemed to be. I was like "what? Thats suppose be an /e/!" Yanta represents a /e/ in Beleriand, Full, Anor, & English mode for those that are wondering. Though the Yanta as a /i/ in this video is correct assuming General Mode! I disagree with both your comments. While it's true that some tengwar were not used by Tolkien in all of the modes, this is simply because the texts he wrote had no need of them. In all Sindarin modes we come to the conclusion that Arda represents RH and Alda represents LH because there is no other possible way to write these. As for Hwesta Sindarinwa, Tolkien never used it in any Sindarin texts ever, so you can't say "It exists in this mode but not that one." Because it is named Hwesta SINDARINwa, we know that it must be used in Sindarin and Appendix E of the Lord of the Rings gives us its value: HW. The only other possible ways to write HW would be Hyarmen and Wilya, which works, I guess, and Hyarmen with a W-squiggly-mark which does not work at all because they would intersect. As for Yanta, in the Mode of Beleriand it simply represents the vowel E in all cases. In the General Mode, however, it is used for both an initial (consonantal) I and the -E part of E-glide diphthongs. See Chris McKay's Tengwar Textbook--it's a must-have for anyone who wants to use any tengwar for anything. Also I apologize for the lengthy rant this comment became I am trying to be as polite as possible. Nai Eru lyë laituva!

I don't know what you mean. But *anna* is a form of the verb "to give" and means "give(s)", "is giving". This word has no diphthongs. The A is always pronounced as in English "father" and the NN has the same sound of "n" in English "no", "not", but a bit prolongued.

assuming you mean the sentence at 7:36? if so i think it’s because it’s a long vowel, so is put on the j-like stem. if the accent was just put on the l afterwards it would lose the long vowel aspect of it

No. Both words mean "farewell". *Namárië* is a word from the Quenya language, and is short for *_á na márië_* , which translates literally "be well". *Novaer* is from another Elvish language, almost always referred to by its Quenya name, Sindarin. It is short for *no maer* , literally "be well" (I won't explain, now, why the initial *m-* of *maer* "well" changes to *v-* in *novaer* ; but if you want me to do so, I'll be glad to do it). Unlike *namárië* , *novaer* is not attested in Tolkien's material, as far as I know (it was invented by someone, so it's not truly Sindarin, but a so-called Neo-Sindarin word).

No, Sindarin RH is definitely not pronounced as English R. Nor as Spanish R. It is a fricative (a spirant) version of Spanish R, pronounced with a wheezing sound simultaneously with the R sound. It's not very easy to pronounce this consonant.

Sorry if I'm being annoying, but, on the video title, the word *Tengwar* followed by *Tehta* placed between parenthesis give the false idea that *Tehta* is a synonym of *Tengwar* , and it is not -- the way the title is written may trick beginners into thinking that *tengwar* and *tehtar* are the same thing. So, "(Tehta)" should not be part of the title. The word *tengwar* (which is a Quenya word) is a common noun (and a plural noun) that refers to the set of Elvish letters (which represent consonants in the Quenya mode, and both consonants and vowels in the Sindarin mode). If used in the plural and witten with a captalized *T* , it becomes a proper noun used as a name of the Elvish writing system: *Tengwar* . The Sindarin equivalent to *tengwa* (singular) / *tengwar* (plural) is *têw* (sg.) / *tîw* (pl.). But since the word *Tengwar* is used to refer to the Elvish writing system (at least outside Tolkien's mythology), both he Quenya and the Sindarin modes, its use in the video title is correct -- despite the fact that the lesson is on (Neo-)Sindarin. Now, *tehta* refers to any of the five signs (the *tehtar* ) that represent the vowels of the *Tengwar* writing system -- in the Quenya mode only (the Sindarin mode uses separate *tengwar* / *tîw* for the vowels). The Sindarin equivalent is *taith* (both singular and plural). If *tehta* (sg.) / *tehtar* (pl.) was a synonym of *tengwa* (sg.) / *tengwar* (pl.) , it should also be in the plural in the video title ( *tehtar* , rather than *tehta* -- as *tengwar* is plural). It's because in this video he uses a real Sindarin accent, while the actors in the movie use English accents (except Aragorn who has a Spanish accent). Although I will agree some of his pronunciations are too Celtic sounding.

@@Enerjy Where should you born to speak a 'real' sindarin accent?? This guy accent apparently is from China or other Asian country. Tolkien is from South Africa but he was raised in England and has British accent. I think this language is one of the most beautiful of all and the accent it's important.. and this video is the reason why. But at his favor, just a few can change it's natural accent, so good for him that he is able to speak this language.

@@hgalindo12 The Sindarin accent is supposed to be somewhere in between Welsh and Icelandic. So, if you want to speak it more naturally, go listen to those langages. The reason this guy's accent is bad is because he doesn't listen to the stress rules. So, when a word should be "ADan," he says "adAN." (btw if you didn't know adan means man)
