The Old Goat is under the hat behind Greg. I've dealt with contaminated compost in my raised beds. Finally got it worked out of my soil but took a couple of years. Some of my plants still don't thrive but it's getting better. Very frustrating for raised bed gardeners. Thanks for the information.

I’m taking master gardeners class. This weeks topic was soil. We are learning that it is definitely the foundation of your garden. Very important to get soil tested. Mr Greg, you must be a master gardener. You could have taught the class today. You touched on pretty much the same sudjects our teacher did. Great job.

Hi Greg and Shelia We are fans of your youtube channel and have purchased seeds, fertilizer & injector, irrigation system, and garden tools from ya’ll. This summer the heat and drought was record setting in Central Texas. Due to this, no one we know had a successful garden. But, we managed to have a good garden and we contribute our success from your advice on row by row, youtube videos, and the supplies we purchased. We have enjoyed your wonderful recipes. We also wanted to say that we have been inudated with fire ants and didn't know to take care of them safely around the garden. The Fertilome-Come and Get It Fire Ant Killler worked just like you said and our fire ants were gone in a few days. Randy and Vickie

This past spring I had to buy soil to fill 30 gallon containers. I bought bags labeled as Garden Soil. I used it to refresh some containers and to fill new containers. This was the worst year ever for my garden. Going to replace all that soil, gradually, with a name brand soil, potting soil. Hope I have better success this fall.
@Chris-op7yt2 жыл бұрын
What you want for containers is not soil but potting media. Just saying there's a big distinction in what works in a veggie patch vs containers. It's a shift in thinking, as you dont really care for having potting media that has all the usual soil goodies in it, as the primary and crucial criteria is good wetting/re-wetting and not turning into sludge on the bottom of container. Mixes that are majority pine bark are terrible. All nutrients are supplied as soluble fertilizer and from time to time give them a good flush with water. All this relies on having the media drain well. Putting crocks on bottom of pot does not help drainage. I use mostly a combination of my peat/perlite mix and coir blocks. You do need to flush the coir blocks, by fully soaking in water and draining that off. You could add a bit of well composted manure or a bit of pine bark mix, but not as the major part. In pots you actually want stable media that does not bio-degrade quickly, so that plants, especially perenials, have a stable mix for many years, without needing constant re-potting and adding of media. Coir based mix will never drown plants, and it's easy to tell when they need water, as pots become very light and easy to tip.

Great show, as always! Thanks for what y'all do for us! That Grazon sprayed hay and straw is a big problem for a lot of folks that mulch with it! It's getting harder and harder to be sure of what you put down. I'm covered up with pine trees at the cabin property and I'm starting to mulch with pine straw and just remove it after the season. Hasn't really affected my PH as of yet and it's free, abundant, and clean. Chiggers and ticks are the biggest negatives. And of course fire ants will get in there, like they do in everything else lying on top of the ground around here. Broadforking is a great way to loosen those soils, introduce oxygen deep into the soil, allow better transmission of water, without "turning over" the ground or damaging it, and get you a heck of a workout all at the same time. That's what a lot of the "no till" folks swear by, to answer Sheila's question. They will also us the "tilther" made and marketed by Johnny's. Powered by a battery operated drill and only "mixes" the top inch or so of the soil, with pretty fine tines. I've got quite a bit of broadforking in my future, come help!! ;)

I watch Roots and Refuge homestead on KZbin. They just moved to SC on a new homestead. Jess started her 1st garden this spring. Since they were anxious to have a garden they bought their compost from a place that sold organic compost. Only it was unknowingly contaminated and all the plants in her high tunnel were just as you described. She decided to plant sunflowers to help pull the contamination out of her soil. The seller was not aware of the contamination and actually thought they were selling good organic compost. LOL Old Goat is on the 2nd shelf from the bottom or Greg's side wearing one of Greg's hats.

I've been trying a psuedo-no-dig since last year. Heavy mulching with dead leaves over the beds as soon as I have them, and I amend when it starts raining in Nov/Dec and I cant really grow anything between Nov-Jan anyway, so I let them sit with the leaves on top during this time. I don't dig all the way down to the clay/sand native layer, I build on top of it, then surround the garden bed "mounds" with wood chip to try to keep them from drying out and make paths.
