But that is not what a lot of spiritual teachings say. They say that karma causes our suffering, not that our Higher Self causes our suffering."

Do we have any control over our future rebirths . For example,Can we create the cause to never be reborn as an animal. ?

Yes, we do. The more awakened a soul is, the more personal choice and freedom they have in their incarnations. We can incarnate down in dimensions and levels of consciousness (like animal, plant, mineral, etc) with relative ease. However incarnating into higher dimensions and higher forms of consciousness requires more soul-level awakening. We can also incarnate back in time or forward in time. So you could potentially have your next lifetime start in the 1800s, for example. Going backwards in time is easier but going forwards is harder because the collective human consciousness is awakening also. So, right now, you are at the most advanced time period on the earth in modern history (since Atlantis). On the other side, we are encouraged to incarnate into a lifetime that matches our level of awakening and boosts our awakening a little more. Too much of a jump is too difficult because the lessons are harder to learn in a single lifetime. The best part is we have eternity to do this. So no pressure! Just love your life!
