I don't think any individual loading time is that bad but when you get into back to back battles after a while it does make you think how much of your play time has been waiting for it to load

@@jaretco6423Honestly same. For as generic Paper Jam is, it at least didn’t drag on for so long like Dream Team did. DT took me 43 hours to beat while PJ only took me 19 hours to beat, about the same length as TTYD & Bowser’s Inside Story. Hell even Brothership didn’t last so long like Dream Team did. Brothership took me 35 hours to beat as opposed to 43 hours. Dream Team just dragged man. I know I’m definitely in the minority here, but that’s just the way how I feel about Dream Team.

@metashade4218 Yeah. For an Mario & Luigi game, that's too long. I don't mind if that added some length just as long as they options for side fetch or something. But not only is the pacing so bad that you can't skip it, but the battles are even slow and I hate some of the Bros. Moves that involves gyroscope.

I agree that comparatively it feels like it doles out the upgrades at around the same rate as the older games, it’s just that the general speed of Brothership is so much slower than a game like Superstar Saga that it just feels way longer. Still, I’m just about three seas in and I’m feeling like it’s finally hitting its stride now. This is the Twilight Princess of Mario & Luigi in terms of pacing, while also being the Wind Waker of M&L in terms of general vibe and setting.

4:14 Thanks for featuring my comment Daniel! The game is so charming, but yeah, the humor is either not hitting, or not really an emphasis like in previous entries. I think in general there's been a decline from the first game to the most recent, and I kind of contribute it to the form factor of each game. Something about the snappy delivery of text and poppy animation between sprites in Superstar Saga really heightened the silliness in a way that higher res visuals either can't quite emulate, or they aren't focusing on those aspects as much. Love this format for a video btw, great to see everyone's opinions!

I wouldn't necessarily say it's the "same ol M&L", since the last few Mario & Luigi games before AlphaDream's closure definitely drove the formula into the ground (and I'm including the remakes in that statement), while this new game has the same "spirit" of the other games while making some changes that feel refreshing in comparison, particularly with how this game handles Luigi.

I’m guessing by my game map that I’m about halfway through, I agree that the beginning is an absolute slog. I think this game is the longest it’s taken Mario and Luigi to get hammers and the first bros attack. Luckily it picks up soon after that, but if I already wasn’t a fan of the series I’m worried I may have stopped before then. Combats great, I love the battle plugs, good replacement for badges/battle cards/etc. Music is just fine, hope Shimomura can return for the next project because she’s just so good at writing music. I honestly am ok with Luigi’s movement in the overworld. It’s a different concept than before, but having Luigi grab turnips or smash boxes while Mario is talking to NPCs is honestly a pretty cool idea to me. They should definitely switch him to the B button for battle menus though, it’s pretty messed to switch his button for two presses and then swap it back. Overall, I think I prefer BiS and Dream Team over it, but Brothership is a solid game, especially for a team who is at least somewhat new to the series. Hope the series continues.

Out of the blue all the time I think back to Super Mario Galaxy and how as Mario you save Luigi in the one boo galaxy. I remember after getting the 120 stars and unlocking the Luigi mode how much I anticipated finding Mario as Luigi in that galaxy. I was so excited for it. Then I got to that galaxy... and I saved Luigi as Luigi. I cried and wheezed from laughter for probably half an hour. I wish that would happen in every Mario game. A bit off-topic, but I always wanted some funny cameos like that and content further implemented into the Mario & Luigi series.

Having gotten farther into the game without actually finishing it yet, I can safely say, despite the slow start and sluggish pacing at times (plus a rather excessive amount of pointless cutscenes that, admittedly, you can skip), this really might be one of the best games in the Mario & Luigi series. It's really funny, especially if you go for certain sidequests, and the characters are likeable and memorable in their own, unique way. The branching paths make your choices feel important while also adding to replayability, and I like the various new things they added like the Battle Plugs system or having Luigi Logic during certain boss battles. It feels like a bold new start for a revived Mario & Luigi series, and if it does continue after this, I hope it keeps on this same path while improving on various little things (since there are a lot of minor gripes I have with the game that didn't really deter from my enjoyment of the game).

Definitely not a Mario&Luigi fan, so I don't have any opinion on the game itself. But Daniel's take on reviews is spot on, I think. They're kind of stupid, because they're entirely subjective and biased by their very nature. The best reviewers do what they can to mitigate their personal bias, but you can never get rid of it entirely. So, like Daniel said, find reviewers you can trust, whose tastes are similar to yours. That way, whether they like or dislike a game can be a good indication on how you'll feel about it.

Man, I wish I saw rhe Bluesky post about this, I've been using that more often. I'll make sure to give you guys a follow there. As for my thoughts, I beat the game 100%, so I have some words to say. I absolutely feel like a lot of these negatives may be sinple growing pains from being a new developer on the franchise. Perhaps Acquire didn't realize how intuitive Luigi's command blocks being B really was, so they thought to themselves that having a uniform confirm and select button would be easier to get to grips with. Maybe they wanted to try something different with automated Luigi and it just didn't pan out like people wanted. Afaik, no one in charge of the story or pacing worked on the prior games and they didn't realize how important especially those first few hours are, because after the first 3-5 hours but before the last 5 or so, I feel like the game got REALLY good. I think the new music isn't bad, it's just not Yoko and her style of music. The performance is- ok actually I can't see an excuse for that, the loading screens start to add up, there's loading screens in places I never thought there would be loading screens, and while I never once had a problem with frame drops during my first 60 hours (out of 70), once I got to ppst-5th sea content, god it started to absolutely chug on the overworld. I fully agree that Luigi needs to control better in general and that pacing and performance is probably the games biggest issue. Some decisions really do feel baffling, honestly. But I honest to god believe that they have something truly special in their hands. I love the battle system, and they absolutely nailed the enemy patterns and attacks right out of the gate. I absolutely adore this art style. I think that this is the most ambitious Mario story a game in general has tried to tell, and while I personally thought the villains didn't have their full potential realized by the end, I really dig the rest of the cast that start to join the ship and play a fairly active role throughout the story. One thing that I feel not many people talk about is how good the side quests are. They feel like a natural extension of the story and all have enough varience to them that I never really got bored of them. I'm not a fan of numerical scores, but I absolutely feel this game is worth a shot. Personally, Brothership is now my 3rd favorite game in the series, above Dream Team but below SS and Bis. I hope the series continues and improves upon this entry by listening to criticism.

Just wanted to say, I’m REALLY enjoying the game so far, but as for how the game handles Luigi, I’m a bit mixed. On the one hand, he’s given more to do, with the “Luigi Logic” being used to have him come up with solutions to problems and even help out during boss battles. I also like the combined attacks for the hammer and jump moves, it helps emphasize that Mario and Luigi are stronger together l, even without the Bros. Attacks/Moves. However, I can’t help but feel that the teamwork Mario and Luigi have on the Overworld is a bit more disconnected than in previous games. You can still make Luigi jump with B (and press Y for his hammer), but there’s no real reason to do so when Luigi automatically jumps as he follows you. In fact, while it is cool that you can make Luigi do things by pressing the L button, the fact that Luigi is controlled by an AI makes it feel less like Mario and Luigi are exploring the world together and more like you’re controlling Mario and Luigi just happens to be there to. It clashes a bit with the messaging of Mario and Luigi having a deep connection and are working with one-another throughout this adventure. That, and having the A button be used to select stuff as Luigi in battle when he uses B ever other time really throws me off, I messed up so many action commands because muscle memory kept messing me up there. Still, those are nitpicks, I think the game is solid as a whole.

loading times, however short, still adds up over the course of a 40+ hour RPG. I played Octopath 2 on my ps5 and it was just instant loading. Just think about the amount of time that saved over the Switch version where every screen transition, battles and just cold boot takes up like 10+ seconds every instance.

I’m very mixed on it so far. The story development is dull, the characters aren’t very interesting, the dialogue feels too friendly and lacks that edge it had before. Hot take but I while the battle system is really fun, I don’t really like the mini bros moves for jumps and hammers, I think it’s too slow compared to how quick battles were in the older games. I’m not a big fan of the visuals, it does look nice in places but I would’ve much preferred a more pixel art (Bowsers Inside Story is peak for the visuals imo). I’ll probably finish it but I’m not enjoying it as much as I thought I would. After 12 hours I would give it a 6/10

Shame they didn't do an “Ask the Developer” interview for this game, I'd really like to know how long it's been in development and how involved the former Alpha Dream staff was in its creation, whether they pitched it or if Nintendo came looking for them at their new companies. This was nice to see a variety of opinions on Brothership (and would like to see this again), but I do want to push back on that final point about whether reviews matter by making fun of IGN's review. I feel like if someone claimed that GVG's opinions can't be trusted because your channel gave The Plucky Squire got too high of a score, I don't think those on staff who didn't care for that game as much would appreciate being grouped together. I think what this exercise did was show how subjective a numbered score can be when something that's unacceptable for one person could be seen as not a big deal by another.

I know the story and characters are in a bit of divisive place right now and I can see why some might be put off. The writing isn't as quirky or exaggerated as in previous games, but I thought what was here was cute and endearing (Some parts genuinely made me laugh out loud). Technikki is a notable favorite of mine as you see her growth and the introduction of her rival. Especially by the latter half of the game and especially endgame I was seated all the way and it's one of my favorite gaming experiences in recent memory. This is the most deep a Mario story has gotten since arguably Super Paper Mario (In fact theh even shares similar themes) , and I played that game and once regarded it as my favorite Mario story (I also really love the Mario Adventures comics)

Back on handhelds, 'Why Can't we Play Co-op' was often dismissed because, from Partners in Time onward, Mario and Luigi did not have the capacity to separate. So the game would need to severely be reworked in its puzzle design to accommodate a two player mode. And also the act of connecting would require two systems and two copies of the game. This switch game doesn't have either caveat so the omission feels several times more glaring. This is the problem with new developers tackling an established franchise, they don't look at the limitations of previous games for ways to add meaningful design choices.

Out of the way, this game is a 8/10 for me. The obvious knocks against it like the performance, Luigi’s command schemes, it’s pacing issues, and it’s underwhelming ostensibly do a lot in terms of holding it back. Yet, a key thing I want to address when people criticized its cast or narrative is what makes me feel that people aren’t getting what they expect. Previous entries captained by alphadream aren’t completely here for Brothership, so it’s hard for me to compare that style with this entry that’s on console, not handheld. The theme of connections are the heart of this game. I loved that (even though it affects the performance) loved that shipshape grew as a community. You may not know everyone’s names, but they do have plenty of characterization in dialogue. The gossipy ladies near the warp pipe who all are snarky, but give hints to side quest. There’s the Twistee island residents who have very artistic pursuits, where any time you’re on another island you’ve connected, if they talk about what inspires them, you instantly recognize they’re from Twistee island. Or, any from Lottacoins, which is obvious from their business suits or being overworked. You know that archetype, but you know where they’re from, what they represent. The entire Chillham and Bernadette relationship being an entire arc, culminating in everyone you met showing up to the wedding. Even small bits like the little kid near the uni-tree watching things grow in the community, or the wisdom from the fisherman, Issa Rock’s reefs, Arc’s Arc with rescuing his father, Connie’s being having to travel up the great lighthouse and almost doing a Final Fantasy like Ritual that purifies, Technikki’s inferiority complex as an inventor compared to the person she lost to in a science competition (and a nod to her interests in impressive girls, but being so scientifically minded and awkward) The brothers from allsand island being parallels to the Mario bros. The list goes on. They really stuck with me on this adventure, and bonds really define themselves in the end, which really completes the package.

My comment on Bluesky was the same as Thomas', more or less. Soundtrack was weak with the weakest battle themes in the series. Really brought down the experience for me. The battle themes have always had a frenetic energy to them that's been replaced by something... way too chill. They leaned very hard into seafaring aesthetics with the music (brass and a *lot* of accordion) and it's a detriment. Also, for a game where the major characters are themed around electrical equipment, there should've been *some* degree of electronic music. I figure that the SMRPG remake and Brothership were in development at the same time. And given Yoko Shimomura seems to be working on KH4, she probably had to choose between the two and picked the remake.

It is quite funny how Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi have swapped in the humor department. Paper Mario used to be a little less jokesy (until Sticker Star tried really hard to be funny, then Color Splash fully succeeded) while M&L (especially Superstar Saga) had very punchy dialogue.

What I don’t get is how a series like Final Fantasy can completely change genres and everyone praises it as a bold new thing, but Mario and Luigi changes a few things while trying to keep what makes the series good there and everyone treats it like a failure. I know they’re different series, but one of those situations feels more genuine to the source and it’s not Final Fantasy.

The thing is, FF16 got some roasted too in their community (at least in Reddit), and Mario & Luigi (at least in Reddit) are positive than I thought. I think there is every type in every community.

Pros: -Nice graphics -Excellent animation -Deeper combat -Many interesting systems at play, like plugs Cons: -Takes forever to get going -Animations are great but it gets tedious watching them over and over -Some enemies are real damage sponges and take a long time to dispatch despite being regular field enemies -Way too much yapping from uninteresting characters saying nothing of value in unskippable cutscenes -Performance ranges from poor to atrocious -Far too much loading Overall it's good, higher than a damn 5, but its a game that does not respect your time which is unfortunately common among jrpgs. Still worth a play and I'm having a better time with it than dream team.

I am surprised how much a single IGN review has riled the public up. I remember last year when the new Spongebob game got mixed reviews, there was a big kerfuffle, but I guess Mario is a different beast since it's been over two weeks, and I still see people talking about it

@@Fooza05 You say that but I'm about 10 hours in and while it's certainly gotten better...I still think it's one of the weakest entries in the series. I agree people will eventually move on, but then again I also remember the wars the Paper Mario community has had surrounding it, and it is troubling.

The load times aren't that bad. But ive been playing games for a long time and load times used to be a lot worse. I do love how the bros interact as well as their animations. But... The Soundtrack is good but not memorable. UI feels bland. Writing is bland. I like what the story is trying to do, but its not quite landing it. Its vary slow paced. Battles drag on too long. Oh but i do LOVE luigi logic! I think its a great addition and i was always very happy whenever it came up. Its not a bad game. Its just... eh. I'm almost 9 hours in, about to wrap up the second sea and I'm struggling to find the motivation to keep going. I heard it gets better in the 3rd sea but I've never accepted the "it gets good half way in" argument. Well, let me try putting it this way. For me its important that a game be replayable. Even if I do beat brothership i don't think I'll ever play it again.

I just beat it last night. I wanted to like it, I really did. But this game just kept dragging and dragging and dragging on. It does that thing, TWICE, where you think you've reached the end but NOPE. More fetch quest, more revisiting almost every island you've already been to. It was padding and fluffing just for the sake of padding and fluffing. The developers obviously didn't plan this out. Side quests aside, this game definitely over stayed it's welcome. My play time was at 60 hours and thats doing everything. This game is mid and anyone that doesn't think so, clearly hasn't beaten it yet. If anyone still think the game is great, just wait till you reached near the end. Incredibly disappointing game.

My only gripe it's with the Final Boss, an epic final boss with all the spectacle that the series always has, BUT the music GOD it fell flat SO bad, the final boss phases music they're so generic and boring, literally the worst final boss themes of the entire series, the absense of Yoko Shimomura really hurt in that department.
