@vovosv You can use the square [ ] bracket keys to make you brushes bigger or smaller. Also in CS4 on a Mac (that's just my platform, probably works for other too) hold the option+command key while left clicking and dragging mouse left or right. Control+option+command and the drag, adjusts brush hardness.

Great tutorial but i have PS Elements 12 and a lot of what you show is not on that. I can't figure out how to get the gradient on just the text, when i put it on it gives the whole image a gradient. Is there any chance you could do a more up to date version of this?

To practice, you can google a free stock photo of a cracked wall image online and credit the owner and where you got it if you plan to show it off. It's best to take your own picture.
