Just wanted to come here at the end of 2020 to say thank you. I was never a huge "new years goal" person because it always felt like as soon as I stopped it would just spiral into depression(Which it had before and I just ended). I didn't really write down "goals" or "ideas" for 2020 for a theme I just kind of kept it in the back of my mind. My Theme ended up being "Hobbies" for the most part. I got into quite a lot this year including DnD, Terrain building, world building, and a few other things that really got me enjoying stuff. I'm looking forward to 2021 and continuing a lot of what I was doing in 2020. The theming really helped allow me to try out lots of stuff without it just feeling like I failed a goal especially with the Pandemic making a lot of stuff feel less worth it terrain building being an example for in person game nights. I haven't really picked something for 2021 yet but have a few ideas of what I want to work on. If there is one thing on the internet that really helped this year it was this 6 minute and 23 second video. I hope you have a great 2021.

This video helped me a lot this year. Looking back on where i started, i dropped out of college as an obese 19 year old who had no idea what he’d do with his life. Once i decided on the military i knew i had to lose weight. Instead of doing strict diets or setting a “I will weigh this weight by the end of the year” i decided to try the “Season/year of health” thing and it really worked well for me. I thought about my choices more, all at the same time working on getting my enlistment set up. 5 months and 30 pounds later i’m about to join the military and already in the best shape of my life. I’m not a mega-athlete now, but i can confidently say i’ll be middle-of-the pack once i get to boot camp, when mere months ago i firmly believed i’d never be able to keep up.

I assigned 2020 as the "Year of Worth" because I had felt guilty for not being "productive" with my time. Productive is a vague and overall unhelpful term so I sought specific activities I like doing. (drawing, reading, quality time w/ family, etc.) I do them, and I enjoy it! I feel like I've spent my time well. The pandemic has probably pushed me to fill my day with more of these pastimes. Thank you for this idea!
@Timon-IrishFolk3 жыл бұрын
Interestingly enough, 2020 was my „Year of productivity“ and I talked to a friend about that and he said „You are always too focused on that, why not make it the year of relaxation“. So I created the „Year of relaxed productivity“ and man, that helped a lot.

The one thing I realised over many years, you have to WANT to do something, and do not set a goal. I always said to myself, I want to do more workout and I have to do this and that. But after one or two days or weeks I always quitted slowly but surely. But then once I had a really bad health condition after lockdown, and I decided I will try running, at least just once a week. And after trying that out, I absolutely fell in love with running in the morning. And since I was flexible with myself, didn't set up a bar how many and when, I actually do it for at least 2 months now. And I also increased the number of 3 times a week, because I really do like it. Since that my health improved and it really became a routine, and the only thing I had to do is just find a better way I love to do.
@ellap68284 жыл бұрын
I like this, because everyone talks about "SMART" goals (Measurable, Accurate, etc., I forget the rest), but I always find that I just don't do them. My failure makes me more depressed and unlikely to try. If I have a theme, I can't fail, and that's way better. Thank you, Grey.
@atlow25434 жыл бұрын
Don't use that as an excuse to slack off. If you never hit any targets then you're still failing. The idea of themes is to make things easier for you, but many things you want/need in life don't come so easily that you can just nonchalantly walk towards them-- sometimes you have to work hard. Grey's idea of themes is a good start, but really you should focus on moving from themes to systems and you should still set targets within those systems-- but they should be more stoic of goals. So instead of focusing on output, they focus on input. It's not 'read ten books in a season' but rather 'spend at least 20 minutes reading every day that you can'. That way you're still pushing yourself every day, but if you miscalculated or can't do it for reasons outside your control, it doesn't completely throw you off your resolution/objective.
@atlow25434 жыл бұрын
@@ZLunas Exactly! We can only do our best-- so that should be considered a victory. Plus if I legitimately have school work and real work all day, then get caught helping family, I can't possibly spend two hours reading nor can I study Spanish. If my goal was just to knock out X chapters of my book, i'd feel disappointed when i miss my target-- but if my goal is based on doing what I can, when I can (while still measuring it) then that day doesn't count as a loss.

Seasonal themes seem like a fantastic idea both in terms of productive change and avoiding burnout. You could even have a yearly or biyearly theme routine or have certain re-occurring themes apply to certain seasons. For example having “fitness season” during the summer where it’s easier to go outside and there’s more sunlight or “reading season” while we spend more time indoors during the winter.

Grey has actually shifted his business model to focus on his Patreon supporters rather than his sponsors, so he's unlikely to have many sponsors going forward. He's even cut the sponsors out of many of his older videos.

I think it was a subliminal sponsorship.

"Not all tools need sharp edges" is an attitude that is **severely** lacking in Grey's early videos.

Andy Wilderness can you tell me some such videos that are snarky? I’d love to see them
@mrFryd4y4 жыл бұрын
@Andy Wilderness No one was getting even remotely defensive. I also haven't noticed the snarkiness and am curious which videos you (or others) felt were "snark incarnate".

I don't think "years of videos" is very many videos when it comes to CGP.

So I watched this video a year ago and decided that my 2021 theme would be health. I actually totally forgot about that but apparently my brain stored it somewhere 'cause I actually did a lot to stay health this year. I finally started to go to a gym and lost weight so I am not overweight and at risk of obesity associated diseases anymore. Also my mental health became a way better. It was actually a long and unpredictable journey. Yesterday I realized that I did it that far because I chose a theme for my year and stopped being like 'I totally will go to a gym next month and start following diet tomorrow'. And I came here to thank you

My theme for this year is financial security. Basically I want to save as much money as possible because after the next academic year I am transferring to a 4 yr Uni and I won't be able to get a full ride scholarship there... I think.
