Srinagar, May 05: Former MLA Langate Er Rashid's son has become a star campaigner for his jailed father. The son of the jailed MLA, Abrar Rashid, has commenced his campaign in north Kashmir's Kupwara district.
During his inaugural campaign in Handwara, Abrar Rashid, without naming any local politicians, expressed, "Shame on those who are behind the arrest of my father." He pleaded with the people to vote in favor of his father, highlighting the pain his family has endured during his father's five-year absence.
He conveyed his elderly grandparents' desire to see their son one last time before they pass away, highlighting that the power to bring him back from jail lies with the voters.
Addressing the gathering, Rashid urged the youth of Kashmir to demonstrate resilience against external pressures, asserting that his father was a beacon of truth amid falsehoods. He shared the personal anguish of not having seen his father in the last five years, with their last conversation occurring in January of this year.
Abrar Rashid, the elder son of two-time incarcerated MLA Langate Er Rashid, is pursuing his Master's degree. Taking up the mantle of campaigning for his father after Er Rashid's nomination acceptance for the Baramulla Lokh Sabha seat, scheduled for elections on May 20th, Abrar has appealed to the youth of north Kashmir to assist in the campaign through social media, citing a lack of resources for traditional campaigning materials.
Experts speculate that Rashid's entry into the election in north Kashmir could disrupt the political landscape for both Omar Abdullah of the National Conference and Sajjad Lone's Jammu Kashmir Peoples Conference.
In the 2019 Parliament elections, Rashid garnered significant attention, receiving over 1 lakh votes as an independent candidate. Though he did not win, he came close to the winning candidate from the National Conference and trailed just behind the Peoples Conference candidate.
Both parties regard north Kashmir as their stronghold, with the Peoples Conference nominating Sajad Lone and the National Conference nominating Omar Abdullah as their respective candidates for the LS Baramulla.
