Simple fact of the matter in this case is that quite literally everything is toxic in high enough doses. Sodium spikes your blood pressure, too much potassium can stop your heart, too much calcium can cause digestive distress, kidney damage, and, ironically, increased bone fragility.

@jin00305 Oxygen is an EXTREMELY reactive element (located right next to Flourine the most reactive element on the periodic table), with an entire class of chemical reactions named after it: “oxygen reduction reactions. Despite being necessary for most Earth-based biology to function, oxygen can be toxic even to us in the form of “free oxygen radicals.” They float through a cell and will bond to almost anything at random, usually breaking an existing bond in the process. This can wreak havoc by destroying a segment of DNA or RNA or a protein. Bunches of free radicals can even just kill a cell by bonding to it’s membrane and breaking it open. That is why “anti-oxidants” are good have in your diet to try and keep that stuff under control.

From what I’ve read, the amount of flouride in water is not enough to be neurotoxic for children on it’s own. However, in conjuntion with another source of flouride consumption like swallowing flouridated toothpaste, it can be enough to be neurotoxic. This is a manageable risk, though. Toothpaste meant for kids has low or no flouride to prevent toxicity if the kid swallows it. Even if a kid uses adult toothepaste, if they simply do not swallow it, they are fairly safe. Teens and adults can tolerate higher doses of flouride and are less prone to swallowing toothpaste, so they are also fairly safe from flouride toxicity.
@Iban-Underground

Well, with modern dental hygiene water flouridation is mostly unnecessary, especially since the fluoride in modern toothpaste basically does the same. That's why there's not really a difference in dental health outcomes across modern countries with varying rates of flouridated water.

@samiamrg7 Күн бұрын
@@Iban-Underground Yes. Incidentally swallowing a small amount is also not enough. The other thing is that unless it is a super-high dose, it has to be fairly consistent intake to become a problem since unlike lead, flouride is very bio-active and is flushed from the body easily.

I went to a corporate dentist after one of the wires in my permanent retainer broke out of the glue holding it in place, and since I'd never been to that dentist before, they had to onboard me, taking a set of x-rays and examining my teeth before they could glue the wire back down. After probing my gums, they insisted I had severe gum disease, and should pay them $2,500 right away to start deep cleaning my gums. I thought that was rather abrupt, and decided to get a second opinion. Also, their repair on my retainer broke over the weekend, where it had been fine for years before breaking the first time. I got my second opinion from my old, individually-owned dentist in my hometown, which was a bit of a longer drive away, and their conclusion was that I didn't have gum disease, and in those spots where their readings came close to those of the corporate dentist, they said that things would get better after getting back into a regular cleaning schedule, since it had been years since my last cleaning (I hadn't had dental insurance for a long time before then.) They also said that corporate-owned dentists had a tendency to upsell their patients unnecessarily. If you can, find yourself a small, family dentist. Avoid Aspen Dental, as in my particular case.

Counter argument: they are $100+ where I live and I have $30 in my bank account after rent. Food takes priority. A regular toothbrush is better than no toothbrush. A regular toothbrush with flossing puts you ahead of most people for dental health. I'm poor. I care about keeping my teeth because losing them is a lot more catastrophic for me. The bigger issue I see so regularly is people getting anything more than soft bristle brushes. Dentists recommend extra/ultra soft Unless you wear dentures. Brushing your teeth should be focussed on the gumline; they are very sensitive and you can harm your gums and "chase them away" with bristles that are too stiff. Also, don't bleach your teeth. Yellow teeth means nothing, it's staining or your natural tooth colour, you're weakening your enamel. Those ads with "the napkin test" are absolutely disgusting, morally repugnant. Person with perfect bright white teeth saying "ugh still yellow" comparing them to a napkin. What, they don't emit light like LEDs? Here, ruin your enamel by chasing a ridiculous beauty standard. Teeth don't need to be white, they need to stay in your head. When it comes to dental health, nothing takes priority over that. Rant over. Anyway, yeah they're measurably better, but you're fine if you keep on top of your dental health and go for regular checkups. If you're doing that you're already ahead of the curve.

for those in chat asking how to take care of their teeth, from one depressed person to another i got some tips: flossing is more important than brushing. both are very important, but if you have to pick one then floss. which is easy to do in bed or at your desk. keep floss close, set alarms. you can do it any time just do it every day brush your teeth in the shower. keep your toothbrush in there, either add toothpaste or don't but somethings better than nothing. i only shower twice a week but brushing my teeth twice a week is still better than nothing look into disposable toothbrushes to keep in your room. they dont need water or toothpaste OR keep your toothbrush in your room, buy children's toothpaste (the shit you can safely swallow) and just rinse your toothbrush when you go to the bathroom next if you have an easier time brushing your teeth, you can do it normally after you go to the bathroom too. you already got out of bed and you're already in the bathroom, what's a little more time and if you can only brush once a day, night is better than morning. sleep with clean teeth, your mouth is in more danger while you're asleep

ive looked a lot into fluoride because i find it interesting and there has been real science not just conspiracy theories doubting it but the overall answer is its a good thing we put it in stuff and that we are not putting too much into anything what the recent research is actually suggesting is in places we DONT put fluoride in water as in some natural bore holes and wells and so on may have deleterious effects due to how high their levels are, we do not put enough fluoride into normal water to cause any problems (with fluoridated toothpaste AND water we may be using more then necessary since it seems you get enough simply from either but we are certainly not using enough to be a problem) so no its not like we will find out a new bit of info tomorrow and stop putting fluoride in water, we know we are putting safe levels in the water! what may happen is we find out that some natural water sources are not acceptable for human consumption (especially children) that have previously only been warned may be bad.

Cancer, heart disease, cognitive decline and chronic inflammation. Native populations typically take care of their teeth, by chewing on specific sticks which act as toothpicks, using urine (typically cow) which helps to neutralise dental eroding acids and bacteria, the Romans did this not too long ago, they actually had a pee tax for the whole population for many uses (it sounds pretty disgusting but it was effective) Native populations as you mentioned also have much lower sugar Intake which helps with dental hygiene greatly, they also tend to chew more which helps the teeth stay active and aligned

There's a long list of health issues with direct correlations to oral health. Yes, that includes forms of heart disease. And native peoples absolutely do clean their teeth; we as a species have been for our entire existence. They just don't necessarily use toothbrushes. Tough and fibrous plants and nuts that are parts of their diets help to strengthen the jaw, teeth and act to clean the teeth as well. They also consume less refined sugar which leads to diabetes, heart disease etc. and feeds cavity causing bacteria. Short version: bad teeth, bad health can be and is absolutely correlated.

I mean, IQ is real, but it is not particularly meaningful, nor was IQ originally even meant to reflect intelligence itself. IQ represents such a narrow aspect of intelligence as is, and like Vaush mentioned, the skills required to perform well on an IQ test can be trained into a person. IQ is decent for predicting long-term socioeconomic status within a capitalist economy, and it may predict a person's ability to perform well on certain tasks, but it is by no means an adequate method of defining a person's intelligence as a whole. Intelligence is more of a qualitative construct than quantitative, and even if we could meaningfully quantify it, we probably shouldn't. The Nazis and eugenicists of the 1900s tried that, and it ended very poorly.

Having too much fluoride can cause fluorosis which is like a staining on the teeth and sometimes can weaken the teeth. So, Fluoride can hurt your teeth, but the fluoride in water is too small of an amount to do that kind of damage on its own. Usually fluorosis is caused by early childhood fluoride treatments being done too much.

I also woke up during surgery, but it was a tonsillectomy and it was mostly the tail end of the procedure scrapping out scar tissue. Also I wonder if I was under the effects of the anesthetic somewhat still because I didn't feel that much, I just remember panicking and flailing around while they quickly put me back to sleep again. The horrors of surgery recovery almost kind of dwarfed the experience of waking up during it tbh. I know not every procedure is the same though.

Do be wary not to take this as all implants are bad always, implants when used in the correct scenarios are amazing. If a tooth is unsalvageable, alternatives to full implants are incredibly temporary, often only lasting a few months to a few years, and also often leading to more expensive dental work further down the road. For example, root canals and crowns are cheaper than getting an implant, but they don't remove the problem, and that tooth will get infected again. Implants *are* expensive (about $5k per tooth, $2.5k for the screw and $2.5k for the cap), but they're totally worth it, as they save a lot of trouble down the line. For anyone wondering, the review that RFK Jr. is referencing had some serious flaws, particularly regarding the quality of evidence that it uses. The studies it examines are largely from places like China, which already has a decent amount of naturally occurring fluoride in its water supply; increasing the fluoride in those areas is not beneficial beyond a certain point, for this very reason. The studies failed to control for a number of third variables, such as exposure to certain contaminants, such as lead. The current consensus is that fluoride is beneficial in very small quantities, and pretty much all drinking water has some level of fluoride in it, whether added or not. Some other misconceptions to bear in mind is the idea that Europe banned fluoride because it was deemed "unsafe" for consumption. Some European countries do have fluoride in their water, whereas others have fluoride in their salt and/or milk instead. So many of the places that do not have it in their water do have it in some form of commonly-consumed food product, in order to ensure high-quality dental hygiene. Other places, like China, often do not require added fluoride, since the natural fluoride levels of the water are already high enough to prevent tooth decay.

The whole fluoride argument is basically "Hey, isn't fluoride bad for you at a certain level? Let's test that on people and see what happens?!" And then *surprised Pikachu face* "Oh my! Having too much fluoride is bad for you! We should ban all fluoride!" I hate how we have to cater to the lowest denominator instead of teaching people not to do stupid things.

I actually *do* have an electric toothbrush, on the basis that my dentist said my mouth generates more plaque than average, hence why I get more cavities than I should. Therefore I need an electric brush that brushes it off harder, plus a fluoride-heavy toothpaste. The next year, all of the teeth that were "looking troubling, but don't have cavities" were doing a *lot* better.

I'm laughing about the electric toothbrush cleaning. I had a similar irrational thing about the dishes I took to work. Though I washed them at the office with soap and hot water, when I brought them home I would wash them again. Why? Because. Something about the office water not being as clean as the water at home. Huh??? Yeah well, like I said, irrational.

Portland banned it, and their kids have cavities 6% more than Seattle kids. Also they missed the first paragraph about that fluoride study: The NTP monograph concluded that higher levels of fluoride exposure, such as drinking water containing more than 1.5 milligrams of fluoride per liter, are associated with lower IQ in children. The NTP review was designed to evaluate total fluoride exposure from all sources and was not designed to evaluate the health effects of fluoridated drinking water alone. It is important to note, however, that there were insufficient data to determine if the low fluoride level of 0.7 mg/L currently recommended for U.S. community water supplies has a negative effect on children’s IQ. This is right before the part about the moderate confidence. They only have a moderate confidence of levels ABOVE 1.5, and none for those below.

Yeah, most likely. The review that he is referencing had some issues regarding the quality of evidence that it used. They did not control for factors such as natural fluoride levels in the water supply, lead, or arsenic. Furthermore, some of the studies mentioned in the review had nothing to do with the consumption of fluoride in water and instead related to burning coal in homes without proper ventilation. Another critique about the review was that some of the studies involved may have not had very good methods of operationalizing IQ (though I strongly oppose the usage of IQ as a measure of intelligence).
