Ayn Rand is a novelist, not surprising she is outselling a niche libertarian philosopher. And no, Kant does not undermine knowledge - on the contrary, and does not save God from Enlightenment - on the contrary. He demonstrates that reason has a purpose - to integrate information from the senses about objective reality, not about metaphysical. Nothing can be said about metaphysical or supernatural by the way of reason and senses. Kant is a hammer against postmodernism. True intellectuals like Jordan Peterson precisely know this. Intellectual cranks like Objectivists don't.

29:28 very interesting. How can Hoppe speak of "standard norms" and "degeneracy" (which implies failing to meet some standard) and people leading "undisciplined" lives. How can Hoppe speak of these personal norms, unless you can get an "ought" from somewhere, something that Hoppe explicitly denies can be done in his argumentation ethics. Since Hoppe denies the natural law position of Rothbard and the virtue ethical position of Rand, it would seem he is either smuggling in a lot more norms than just private property and the NAP that are unsupported, or else he thinks we can get a lot more from the _a priori_ of argumentation.
@NicholasSinard6 жыл бұрын
He believes in the is-ought gap. That does not mean he doesn't believe in ought-statements. Furthermore, you can have norms that are stated as is-statements that prescribe nothing. Simply descriptions of social rules.
@2046-b2o6 жыл бұрын
Umm yes, I noted that he believes in the is-ought gap in my comment. But Hoppe himself disagrees with you, he says his theory is "value free" and doesn't contain _any_ oughts (EEPP p. 401, 408 ff.) Now of course there can be purely descriptive accounts of social rules and behaviors, but without _any_ prescriptive force ("that prescribe nothing" in your words), it would be hard to call these _normative,_ for what we think of as normative is just what we think is making an ought claim.
@NicholasSinard6 жыл бұрын
_ 2046 I know AE doesn't contain any oughts, but that doesn't mean he doesn't believe in any oughts.That doesn't mean he rules out the justifiability of such statements.
@2046-b2o6 жыл бұрын
@@NicholasSinard 1. What functional difference is there between "believing in oughts" and "thinking oughts are justifiable"? It can't be merely "I believe that other people believe in them" because that would tell us nothing. 2. Indeed Hoppe can say, I believe there are personal norms, oughts, and one should live a "disciplined life," as he says in the video, and that these norms are not grounded in is-statements, but then he has two choices: (a) he has unsupported norms which his own theories do not do any substantive work to support, or (b) you can get a lot more from "the a priori of argumentation" than just the NAP and private property, which he hasn't shown. Note I'm not saying you can't believe in such oughts, or that I even disagree with Hoppe that living a disciplined life and having personal norms is good, only that it's interesting that Hoppe speaks of them while they seem to be at tension with his "value-free" version of ethics and while he has taken other ethicists to task for even attempting to provide a grounding for such claims (cf. EEPP pp. 312-23, 407-8.)

Yeah. But there's a certain level of intelligence that will cause someone to fixate on a grammatical error without realizing that by doing so they are making themselves the butt of the joke. And the way Malice uses the title, it's never ungrammatical. He will start by introducing the guest and then saying "and you can take that as your welcome" or something. So the joke is that he has chosen a title that will provoke certain people over and over again to reveal themselves as smart enough to know basic grammar but not smart enough to understand the full context of what they are talking about. It STILL sounds like he thinks of behavior as something with its origins in the same thing that gives a person blue eyes or thick, wooly hair (i.e., race) rather than the values with which they are brought up and the examples set by those around them (i.e., culture). It's hard for me to believe Barack Obama (much as I loathe and despise him), has an attitude toward time (e.g., when it comes to showing up to work on time or meeting a friend at an agreed-upon location when he says he will) that does NOT reflect his going to the expensive Ivy League schools he attended, his working mom's work ethic, and similar non-biological influences. Meanwhile, it sounds as if Hoppe looks at him (if he didn't know who he was) and figures he's "like them" rather than "like us", as he says to Malice. Which reminds me: I wonder what the basis was for his taking for granted he and Ukrainian-born, Jewish Michael Malice are members of the same race. Or if he would still classify the two of them that way if he were aware he's Jewish (if he doesn't already, I mean). Not all German--probably Lutheran born and raised--people, nor all Jewish people see it that way. Mind, I don't care about any of this in the context of someone who wants to take the power to DO anything about any feelings they hold regarding others away from themselves and from all individuals, so my questions really are largely academic and a result of amused curiosity and nothing more (certainly not rising to the level of some kind of accusation), but it DOES entertain me to wonder whether he realizes what he says he thinks is somewhat belied by how he expresses it.

Depends on how pedantic you feel you need to be. Broadly speaking, the right historically stands for the conservation of certain historical institutions while the left historically stands for the destruction of those institutions in the name of progress. Many libertarians, especially rothbardian/hoppean/misesian types, are in favor of the preservation of institutions like private property, traditional marriage, the family, and more broadly "the west" as the cultural milieu in which those institutions have best flourished and brought about unprecedented prosperity. So in this sense, libertarianism belongs on the right end of the spectrum (flawed as it is).

Degeneracy would die out in a free society? ...What?
@kulak85486 жыл бұрын
@Adon HaddadPresumably as an anarchist, he means one without a state. I see it somewhat backwards, where such a free society could only exist if degeneracy dies out first. But I don't see any reason to believe that is even possible.

He defined degeneracy as those behaviours that only exist or are more common because of the existence of the state, so to say that degeneracy would die out in a free society is tautological.

How disappointing to hear that Hoppe is an agnostic.
