Today I'm explaining why your workout doesn't matter as much as you think it does. You'll get your Total Daily Energy Expenditure explained, aka your TDEE. What is TDEE? Make sure you watch the entire video. I'll give you some ideas on how to increase your NEAT and how to burn more calories in a day. To increase your daily energy expenditure, your workout isn't the factor to think about. Enjoy!

I agree. I think why people (mainly women) give up on exercise is because they see it being the way to lose weight rather than realizing the majority of the benefits aren't weight loss related. The best exercise is the one you do and like you said the point is to keep your body moving.

Totally agree. I never understood why I started gaining so much weight when I changed jobs. I went from walking 14k steps a day at a clinic to a desk job where I barely walk 5k.. being active will always take priority (in my opinion) over food.

I wish I understood this more when I was right out of college - my body went through a LOT of changes and the biggest reason why is likely because I went from walking all around campus, in the mountains, to sitting at a desk job all day basically overnight. It's hard to get that movement back in when you don't have natural mandated movement breaks (15 minutes between classes, walking from your dorm to the dining hall, etc.) in addition to whatever exercise you're doing. Sure you can take the stairs and park a little further away but it's just not the same if your daily life isn't walkable like it used to be. Thanks for the video!

This is a big part of my healthy goals. I don't sit down unless the kids are in bed. I am also a server and go to the gym 3 to 4 times a week doing mainly weights. My body is changing so much and I don't get crazy with the calorie counts/ restrictive eating. And I do drink a bunch of water. Once the kids are down I read for an hour. I feel so good.

I live in quite a big city in germany and here (I think in most bigger european cities) most places aren‘t too far apart. I used to use public transportation or my electric car a lot. However just recently I started walking EVERYWHERE. When I visit my parents‘ house I walk about 2 hours (8km), when I go to my college I walk about an hour (4km) and I feel SO much better. You just have to start planning differently and check your weather app regularly😂

Wow it's actually eye opening. I didn't realize how much my life has changed this year to 100 percent sedentary. I actually should be thankful that I didn't gain even more weight. I was so depressed for such a long time that I don't lose weight despite everyday exercise. I can really see how my body changes for better, but my weight stays still. Well, ofc it does, because I don't go anywhere...
@Alayne504

This totally makes sense and is probably the reason I’m not loosing weight. I’ll do a youtube workout between 30-35 mins sometimes 40-60 mins and it will be the only excercise i do lol. Other than that workout I am very sedentary here at home. I know I should add some walking which I have in the past and when I think about what really worked in the past walking has been included along with strength training. This is the confirmation I need to just get up and do it since I was literally on the couch depressed because I can’t understand why my weight loss has been slow. Thank you.

I was the strongest/leanest with P90X2 back in 2011. I ate well and stayed on my feet most of the day. I did X2 again a few years later with poor diet and ONLY did X2. No walking, just working out and driving everywhere. My results were poor. The moves are not for the faint of heart and they definitely make you stronger and leaner, but the body is not designed to endure that amount of intensity then stay sedentary the rest of the day. This video speaks volumes 📣📣📣

Yeah, it's insane how important the movement part is. From the whole not moving, stress and eating badly I got heavier than I've ever been during quarantine. I've always had some body image issues, and that got me super depressed. Which certainly made it harder to lose it. Luckily I got it under control and scaled back again, but it's an ongoing struggle.

Thank You!!!! This was the most helpful video I have ever watched on KZbin! I injured the tendons in my ankles and spend 2 years sitting/laying in bed most of the time. I received bad advice from the first physiotherapist I saw and bedrest was not what I was supposed to do and just made things worse. I could not understand why I gained some weight during that time. I still could do leg workouts but on the ground and lifted weights while sitting on a chair. In fact, I was even lifting heavier than before my injury. I still ate pretty much the same way. I was always blaming my weight gain on the fact that I could no longer do cardio but when you talked about NEAT it all made sense to me. The third physiotherapist I saw was able to help me and I'm recovering now. I'm starting to be able to move my body more (NEAT) so I hope in time I can get back on track and finally get back to how I looked before!

I know this is a year old but so helpful. Thank you for being so honest about not being on point on your diet all the time. Diet is the hardest for me but I'm improving! I've had to get my steps in via a low impact walking workout videos. I have a sedentary job (working from home) and other than my lifting (at home) I'm a potato. LOL. So I recently just added these "workouts"...not intense, just a lot of steps. That helps me get to 7K average a week. Officially it's a workout but it's really more about increasing my NEAT if that makes sense. When my job was in an office, I had much more NEAT. The building was large and the walk to the company gym was a haul and also walking to meetings and to and from my car, etc etc etc. So the NEAT came in naturally.

Same here. I mean, somedays I actually can't move with my chronic illness. I think goals for movement need to be adjusted for folks like us, and we should be forgiving of ourselves for not being able to be the kind of active healthy folks are capable of. Right now I am getting in exercise every day, but weird things always happen to mess that consistency up eventually (injury, sleeplessness, or some other weird health issue cropping up). My goal is simply not to give up and try my best given the body I have. And days when I can move more, I definitely do! But it's so hard!

For me, my pain is more manageable if I don't stop moving. As soon as I need to sit down or lay down, I am done for the day because all of my pain and stiffness seems impossible to overcome to get up and moving again. But as long as I keep moving, my pain is manageable and my arthritis doesn't bother me as much.

I really think I should ignore the scale for a while to be honest...it gets too into my head and then I get frustrated. As for muscle mass I completely agree on the increase as well as strength. I started her workouts in September 2020 off and on (on more now since the new year) and I’m doing exercises I NEVER thought I could! Thank you so much for your wonderful content. I’m glad I found you!😁

This video was so helpful. I definitely underestimate the importance of those day to day movements that can be as simple as going for a walk. And then when I stop working out for whatever reason, I don't have that to help support me. ✨

After living through a VERY cold winter in a poorly insulated house, I resorted to staying wrapped in blankets for practically three months. The result? I got quite soft, to say the least. The solution? Moving to a better insulated home and living in a neighborhood where I can walk to do most of my errands. My toned body came back in about a month. You're right, Justina. Non-exercise activity really matters!!

I've heard this before, but it's totally drowned out by all the diet talk. I have been tempted to "work on" my perfectly fine diet and this video came just in time. What I really actually need to do is find opportunities to move all day. That will be better for my spine/joints and muscles, too. Thank you!

This is so great omg I worked at a warehouse 4 times a week and worked out maybe once or twice a week once i left and covid started i gained about 20lbs 😭 i didn’t wear a tracker at work but i was probably getting about 30-50k steps in a 10 hour work day! Personally for me cardio and walking works better for me since i have a hormonal problem that causes insane water retention but it’s making sense i average about 5k-7k a day and while I do workout I’m still 10lbs heavier than I was pre covid. No diet changes either. This is a great video & im gonna walk around my apartment for an hour now lmao btw new sub 💜

I am working out way more during covid than before and I have maintained my weight because my daily movement/steps are way down. With working from home - especially in winter - I barely walk. So, my increased exercises compensates for the lack of movement throughout the day.0

Hi Justina! Great video as usual. Since I watched it and thought about it for the past two weeks (lol), I kept thinking of one question - how does the body differentiate between exercise and non-exercise activity? Especially for things like steady state cardio? Is it an intensity thing? Sorry, this is a stupid question and I know at the end of the day it all comes down to moving more and treating your body well in a balanced manner, but just curious :)

Loved this video! So insightful. Looking forward to one about cardio vs. strength. I find cardio really boring and only have 4/5 opportunities to work out during the week. Should I be devoting all of that to HIIT/ Strength or do I need to do some cardio?
@JustinaErcole
@JustinaErcole 3 жыл бұрын
So happy you enjoyed! The amount of cardio you do depends on your individual goals. For most people though, I find they only need one day of cardio per week and the rest of their workouts should focus more on strength. And remember cardio doesn't just need to be a run! I'll give lots of examples in the video :)

I'm so anxious about where nutrition on youtube is heading towards and I really hope it won't transfer in real life. I watched in the last few days diet videos to get meal inspiration and even on ones that were 3 years old I saw comments like: calories in calories out is a myth, counting calories is toxic, you promote eating disorders... all these people talking about intuitive eating... we never talk about nutrition in schools in my country, I have friends that belive a chocolate is 30 calories 🤦🏼‍♀️how can you talk about intuitive eating when we have shows like secret eaters with people who say they eat 1200 cals but they actually eat 3000-4000. I am.glad we still have acces to reliable information and people that are happy to listen to it

I miss walking (from 15k steps a day, in average, to 6k) but I'm so afraid of COVID that I prefer to self quarantine at home. I've changed my diet, although, and choose more strenght workouts than cardio ones, so... I lost 14 lbs since the last year. But still miss walking (doing it in the hall it's not the same and my knees don't like it). *** Sorry for my crappy English, Spaniard here.

Interesting enough I must’ve been one of the odd people who actually was more active and fit during/after Covid. When Covid hit (preface I was mainly doing home workouts pre Covid anyway) I was working from home and taking workout breaks, then was furloughed/then my position was eliminated and fitness was one of the few things that brought me joy during this godawful time. I also wasn’t eating out as much during that time as lots of places were closed.
