I cannot with that somatic workout. I’ve done all the therapy modalities. EMDR, somatic experiencing, DBT all real ways to deal with trauma. And guess what, I’ve lost over 200lbs and I still have to go therapy. Being a size 4 has not relieved me of my trauma or the need to see a therapist when things crop up. I hate it here, but I love Justina. Lol

I have more things to say. Regarding cortisol… I knew I had some hormonal issues. I fed into the cortisol thing and read that horrible hormonal book encouraging folks to take things like ashawaganda(linked to kidney issues) because I was constantly being told I was fat and to just lose weight. So I had a panel don’t prior to surgery and discovered I had a entirely separate hormonal disorder. Start with your primary or go to an endocrinologist. Cortisol issues aren’t super common, but estrogen related issues are way more likely to be an issue. Go to the doctor loves.

It's not demon food, but I know it's nutrient void, so I factor it in when I can for enjoyment. I factor it into my general daily calories. I did a lot of work looking at why I ate, when I ate, and how. I used to rely on high calorie, high sugar, nutrient void foods to relax *every night*. You always make me so glad I’m not on tictok. I’ve never heard of the somatic bs, but WOW. 1) it implies that all big people are mentally unwell and all small people are mentally happy and healthy. 2) it’s bad enough when exercises promise to make you sweat buckets or collapse from exhaustion, but now the goal/promise is to sob?!? 3) if you have unresolved trauma or constant stress, see a mental health professional, not a seedy app. 4) it kind of implies that losing weight is more important than our mental health, like these women are only dealing with their emotions so that they lose weight, not even get physically healthy, just lose weight. 5) way to take the positive quality of exercise helping many people with stress, anxiety, depression, etc., and totally ruining it for a super vulnerable population.

Somatic therapy is real, however, it's not the least bit a fitness routine. It should only be done with a licensed therapist, and even then, not all are knowledgeable in this particular modality. At its core, somatic awareness is about understanding patterns of behavior that have been established due to chronic stress. Sometimes traumatic experiences are part of the stress response, but chronic stress also creates a trauma injury (think of the way a dimple is created on a rock with a steady and constant drop of water). Somatic therapy is meant to build capacity for stress by redirecting the activating event. I hope that helps.
@BrawnyKingFitness Жыл бұрын
Another swell reaction video 👍 What people get wrong about stress is that it is actually good for pure fat loss. 😖stress increases brain activity and your brain does need a substantial amount of calories. Some people also start fiddling and shaking when stressed which also adds up, although not a lot. Stress in itself does not cause fat gain. People tend to eat more when stress and that could be a factor. Even if there is a positive correlation, it's not significant. Diet and lifestyle always come first. Not that stress should not be addressed, but it will not contribute to fat loss.
@JustinaErcole Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah it's the same thing that people do with cortisol. Cortisol = bad. Stress = bad. It's just more nuanced than that.

“Storing emotions in hips” is something I have always questioned. I first heard it in yoga class where weight loss wasn’t even mentioned. But emotions live in our heads sooo….??? What’s that mean? Why the hips? I’d be more likely to believe that emotions are stored in the neck and shoulders because of the physical response to negative emotions (hunching, scrunching, stooping) but hips? 🧐🤔
@JustinaErcole Жыл бұрын
I heard it a lot in yoga too. And we need to remember that yoga is much more of a spiritual practice but has been misrepresented by the fitness industry. So I don't really have an issue with that claim alone. But when people start using it to sell weight loss, I see a huge red flag.
@violettefemme21 Жыл бұрын
I’ve heard it a lot in yoga (not related to weightloss at all). The only time I’ve completely broken down in tears in the middle of a yoga class was in pigeon pose which is a big hip stretch so I tend to believe it in a sense. But more in the spiritual side of things… not a fitness/weightloss things.
@jennterry6977 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I have used somatic exercises recommended by my therapist and have also had emotional releases in yoga classes so I don't think it's a complete lie. It's just not weight loss related.
@bulbasaurevolved Жыл бұрын
In my yoga class they talked about storing emotions in lots of places in the body including back/neck etc. Idk why these people keep focusing on the hips lol but when I heard it was more like, “different people store emotions in different places in their body”
@henbanana Жыл бұрын
it's rly not just the hips it's more about which joints you clench when you're stressed-some people have it in their hips others in their knees, elbows, etc but i think a part of it is also more spiritual

Definitely enjoyed the video. I love content that debunks bad fitness advice or just nonsense advice that won't really hurt you, but it's just not that effective. Also, I'd love to hear a deep dive into semantic workouts. I have a good amount of trauma that I'm processing. If that's a legit way to release the pain, then I'm gonna try. Even if results vary, but it's not harmful, I'm going to try.

Gotta love all the claims about how a certain workout lowered their cortisol levels. Like are they really doing the blood test needed to prove that claim? Somehow, I doubt it 🤣

That's so crazy. I burn more calories faster than someone who is smaller than me. It's genetics. Lol

You might want to do some reading on nutrition before making “educational” videos. Sugar and candy are far worse for you than potatoes. Also, it’s perfectly possible to never eat them. Why do you assume people are going to binge on them? I haven’t eaten candy more than about 5 times in the past decade, and I know dozens of people who are the same way. I think you’re projecting your unhealthy addictions onto the people trying to get you to change.

Hey Richard, I've done plenty of reading and am a Precision Nutrition coach. It seems that you've completely missed my point regarding the negative effects this type of content has on people's mental health. I'm more than happy to send over the studies that support this.
