I have reservations about putting electrical components on basement floors. Every permanent structure in every basement that I have owned was lifted up 3 inches off the floor by an additional concrete slab so that any moisture [or flooding] doesn't affect the equipment. Batteries, those beasts of burden. In 1975 I packaged a UPS battery bank for a Univac system that was being relocated. There were 88 batteries, each weighing 165 lbs (75 kg). That made getting them into their shipping boxes “difficult” as they could not be inverted. Also, they were lead acid. So if one of them was dropped and cracked or broke open, sulfuric acid spill would ensue. We did the job without incident…a serious relief.

I was wondering what you had in the works. I’ve only ever seen 1 other install of these and it wasn’t from someone who usually does solar stuff. I’ll be honest, when I hear “there’s a few hours worth of training before commissioning” that kinda turns me off. I guess it’s probably to help with common issues people experience. It does look like a very clean install though. After looking at some of the comments of people concerned that you ditched your Growatt, you’ve got the same idea I have. I’m gonna figure out how to put in a transfer switch to be able to switch between multiple test systems. Did you happen to mention what the output size of the inverter was? Maybe I missed it. How’s the response time in the app? Hopefully it refreshes more than every 5 min.
@AveRage_Joe Жыл бұрын
YesSirrrrr! Have been getting stuff ready for this install and doing a few other things around the house lol. Oh and also went to that Vegas thing. Anyways, Yeah the training you guessed it. Its more of online videos with a few quizzes to make sure you were paying attention 😏. I would say its more for someone who wants to become an installer. Yes my other system is all intact, just needing to throw in a transfer switch so I can switch between the 2 or 3 if you count the generator. A single inverter has 7.6kw output. Response time of the app is less then a min. More on the 30seconds time frame. I can check that tho so dont quote me lol

@AveRage_Joe Жыл бұрын
Thanks. The CT clamps are current sensing clamps/sensors and they just clip on. You "flip open" the sensors to slip around you mains wires and then snap them shut. I actually have 2 different kinds lol. The black ones are used with the EP Cube and used when installing the system for a partial home backup. That means when you are powering a sub panel like I did. This way of install will still power EVERYTHING in the home including the mains panel. If the grid goes out, those CT"s sense along with the gateway the grid is out and then stop powering the main panel but still continue to power the subpanel. The white CT's used in my panel are the Emporia smart energy home monitor. I purchased it a while back so I could see how much power certain things were using which also allows you to track over time. I wanted to see how much power my AC, Stove and Dryer used so I could calculate how much solar and battery I would need. This is the Emporia and is an aff link btw -> amzn.to/46DXcyx

I believe so for the most part BUT you would want some sort of connection to commission it and to get the update. If you want the warranty then I think you need to connect internet once a month. But I can say a lot about the external appearance. The designers at EP Cube did a great job. If the installation had been professionally carried out UNDER PLASTER (I mean that the necessary PVC and steel pipes ARE HIDDEN and do not disfigure the home "power plant"!), the system would delight with its elegant simplicity! This appearance is the path to market success, it is the path to the future.

Thanks for the detailed installation video. I'm considering this system with two inverters and 5 batteries each (you need 5 batteries to get the 7.6 KW output power when you don't have solar panels) for a whole home back up (so no sub-panel) as I'm mainly interested in instant backup and I may add solar panels in the future but not sure yet. Training and connectivity requirements are much like Enphase. In other words, this isn't meant as an inexpensive DYI system, but you can DIY it if you take the time to do the on-line training.

Honest question that just occurred to me... when your PV array is producing more electricity than you can use or store in your batteries, where does that excess go? Assuming not feedback into the grid... where does it go? I'm guessing the PV panels or controller or whatever just throttles the PV output. But even so, at the panel level, where does the power go?
@AveRage_Joe9 ай бұрын
Thats a great question! I think with older controllers it would be dumped into a dummy load in the controller. With this...🤷♂️ Ill have to see next time its full charged and a good amount of sun. Put a clamp meter on the wires and see what it shows.🤘

Do you need to be a licensed electrician to take the installation course? I would prefer to set up the system myself after taking the class and then have an electrician do the final connection to my home. Great video and kind regards.

You do not need to be an electrcian to take the course. Its videos with a few quizzes. Its mainly to familurize you with the system, how to hook it all up ect. You can 100% install it and have an electeician do the final connections. Thanks for watching btw🤘

Excellent video on the installation and operation of the system! Looking forward to the video of the generator hookup. I’m wondering if the EP cube Gateway requires a 240v generator ( I see the L1 / L2 terminals) or if it will accept a 120v feed.
@AveRage_Joe Жыл бұрын
Thanks and Appreciate that! Yeah a generator option is pretty nice. Yeah it will require a 240v connection as far as this moment in time. They are always upgrading so who knows, maybe a 120v will be an option.🤘

Pretty awesome video and your sense of humor, first time viewing any of your videos. Question - I noticed that the EP Cube inverter in the (All In one) has a TIGO connector, so is it compatible with Tigo solar optimizers? I kind of want to have individual monitoring on the solar panels to show individual panel production. What are you going to use? Thanks !
@AveRage_Joe10 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. Yeah it has the tigo RSD. I am pretty sure it works with the optimizers but can check. I believe you need to use the tigo app to see individual production. I am using TS4-A-2F on one string at the moment and they allow 2 panels for one rsd unit. They dont show any production tho. Still need to add them to the other roof string. I will also add that EP Cube has updated the app and you can now see each string production. Thats a plus because before it just showed a total for all strings added.

On a Sol-Ark 15K you can power you panel via Grid, Battery and Solar all at the same time, and if the Grid goes down, you don't need to use an interlock to disconnect the Grid and use your inverter to power loads because the Sol-Ark 15K has an internal disconnect that can sense via CTs when the Grid is down. Moreover, the Sol-Ark 15K can pass through 200A from the Grid which allows you to run a whole house panel behind it, have a Grid Tie in front of it, and allow power from Grid, Battery and Solar all at the same time, then disconnect from the Grid when the CTs sense a power-outage, but still allow you to power you whole house panel via Solar and Battery (with Generator connections available to recharge batteries if batteries run out because of a lack of solar). So in the EP Cube, it looks like there is no Grid passthrough, as your backfeed breaker must be off via the interlock if Grid power is on. Thus you have no way of combining Grid, Solar and Battery all at once. Is that true? Must say though, the EP Cube is one sexy beast versus the plain jane Sol-Ark 15K plus a host of batteries to which it can connect. Appreciated your video.

@billceve983011 ай бұрын
you are using 6 AWG from smart gateway to the sub panel....so is that sub panel only 50 amps? you are using 2 awg from the main panel to the smart gateway unit... that has capability of 90 amps. If your sub panel is only 50 amp, that is not very much capacity.. So I am assuming you are only running the 6 awg to the sub panel since the single inverter only has 7.6 kW output. If you wanted to run a higher capacity sub panel, you would need to use a 2 inverter (15.2 kW) system.... is that correct?

Question... If I have an electric stove and a 36Kbtu AC mini split in a separate none-backup panel (connected to grid all time) and I also have "net metering" setup, could this damage my system? I know that current cannot flow in two directions same time, so when the air conditioner and stofe are on, "net metering" should not work. But could this damage my system? I am posing this scenario because I would like to extend battery life.
@AveRage_Joe2 ай бұрын
It shouldnt damage anything. I have 2 different hybrid setups on at the same time and all is good. I do have a question tho. What is your other system. If its just a grid tie system, you could probly add it to this system as this allows existing AC coupled to be connected right to it.

How do you operate the system without an app ? Companies do go out of business and apps do get deprecated from various app stores. Without an offline way to operate this system, I am not sure how we can expect this system to be supported for next 20+ years.

@AveRage_Joe Жыл бұрын
Thanks appreciate that. I am unsure if you can combine solar. I dont think so but will try to find out. Minimum cost for this system alone includes 3 batteries and is $11,369.00 from Signature solar at the moment. With 5 batteries that I am testing out is $14,599.00.

EP Cube is great but still WAY overpriced compared to the EG4 18Kpv inverter with vertical wall mounted batteries from Signature Solar. They don't take much room on the wall either although not as aesthetically pleasing as the EP Cube.

One thing that bothers me about these wall type units is how long will the parts be available in the future if something fails and needs replaced will I be able to get what I need years down the road whereas if using individual components I could easily find replacements and even upgrades as time goes by. Your thoughts on this? Another question, if you cant access your app for any reason than you cannot access the system but the system will still work for backup power ? And you have to have a grid connection with this or it cannot be powered on? if all this is true then for a shtf situation there is to much dependence on outside the home tech to be up and running for it to be truly dependable in my opinion.
@AveRage_Joe10 ай бұрын
All are great questions. Ill be doin another video here soon and will answer some of those questions. For a true shtf situation, I would go with another system as you could add rando mix and match batteries to an inverter and have power. Id have to see if I could patch in batteries to this system. If I could, I dont think the %SOC would read correctly but I would be ok with that lol The app uses your local wifi network so if interwebs is down you can still access it. If your local wifi is down you can connect bluetooth. I know you need grid connection for inital startup, I havent checked if it will startup without grid since I have been using it. I will check tho
