You don’t need to wash Lechuza Pon before using it, as it comes pre-cleaned and ready to use from the factory. Lechuza Pon is specifically formulated to be clean and pH-neutral, and it already contains a small amount of fertilizer that will last for several months. Rinsing it could wash away some of these nutrients, so it’s best to use it straight from the bag to retain all the benefits.

If you wash the pon before use It, there is no danger of washing away the fertilizer initially contained in the pon? and if the roots grow down, is there no danger that they will be able to pass through the holes on the bottom of the container, thus ending up in the water, with consequent damage to the roots due to water?

@aniliname
@aniliname 3 жыл бұрын
Half sphagnum half pon? Pon hold much more moisture than one would think. Unless it's a baby plant (and even if it is) I wouldn't add moss to the pon. It'll be too dense and moist. Monsteras like to dry out a little anyway. My large non-variegated adansonii (and two babies) love straight up pon in just regular pots with no reservoir.
@Hero87
@Hero87 3 жыл бұрын
@@aniliname Thanks for your reply. The way I have it is in separate layers, so pon at the bottom and then sphagnum moss on top. Do you think that's fine? I didn't want to risk using all Pon on my variegated adansonii in case it killed it. I tried doing 100% pon on my Monstera Peru but the leaves turned yellow so I transferred it back to soil. However the M.Peru was in poor health anyway, will give it ago on some other plants.
@aniliname
@aniliname 3 жыл бұрын
@@Hero87 I’ve heard that they’re pretty “furious” growers and not all that sensitive regarding humidity, so I don’t know if the extra moss is really necessary. I feel like it might potentially induce stem rot or fungal spots in the worst case. If I were you, I’d just go for straight pon and just keep it a little extra moist in the beginning if it’s a juvenile plant. Pon itself somehow manages to create a humid microclimate for plants. For instance, I have 6 calatheas in pon and no crispy edges and no humidifier. It depends on your environment, of course, but more often than not, my extra babying efforts have ended up being too much. Also, I’ve converted at least 90 plants thus far and haven’t had any yellow leaves and that includes a few real divas (so I was surprised when it was mentioned in the video). The only failure I had was a fittonia, which isn’t a big surprise, and a big philodendron verrucosum (but they’re super sensitive to just about everything and have rather fine roots). My small verrucosum with hardly any roots did extremely well, however (and has turned out to be a much more resilient plant with lower watering needs than the other one since living in pon). Usually the “worst” thing that happens to me is the plant slows down its growth for a little while as it shoots out some thicker new roots, but it’s normal that they first focus on their roots after being repotted anyway. Good luck whichever route you choose!

OK, pretty sure I've worked this out for myself. It's because with leca you can get root rot if you change from soil without cleaning the roots off. Lechuza pon advise (on the bag) that you don't need to so I assume that doesn't tend to happen. I did mine yesterday by cleaning most of the soil off but not actually rubbing the roots clean so hopefully it will be fine.
@aniliname
@aniliname 3 жыл бұрын
@@Tismesue I've seen this advice from Lechuza as well and that applies to larger plants in their self-watering pots. It helps to wick the water from the reservoir and isn't as damp/is more airy as pure soil in self-watering pots. However, I (and all the gardeners I know that use pon) clean is off as well as possible. If you use self-watering, having soil deposits around the roots can keep them too wet. If you have no reservoir and just let the water drain out, it's a bit less of an issue. I personally try to clean them as much as possible and have had a lot of success that way.
