The phone questions to ask when buying a used car are important for a number of reasons. They will help you determine if the seller is a legitimate owner or a broker. You do not want to be buying from anyone who is pretending to be the owner. Therefore the questions that you ask will always have that in mind. You do not want to waste your precious research time on dead ends, and brokers are, for the most part, dead ends. The idea behind these questions is also to establish yourself as a legitimate buyer. Sellers will get tons of responses from listing agents, brokers, dealers, and others who are interested in getting an appointment. When you speak with the owner you want to be the first person to see the car. If the car is a great find and you are the second person, then the chances are that the car will be sold from under you. You cannot let that happen. This video goes into the crucial questions to ask when buying a used car so that you get the best car from a real private party seller. The video will also help you know how to be the first person to look at it. - See more at: yourcarangel.com/2013/10/quest...

Most of the times people sell their cars privately because it will soon need a big maintenance item done and they want to get more money than the trade in at a dealership, so once they get their money they get a newer car. Also, when you buy a car from a private owner you buy it completely AS IS, once you hand the money if the car splits in two you own both halves so take that into consideration. Not all private owners are honest and not all dealers are crooks. The Internet is a great tool to see which dealers are in for a quick buck and which ones take pride in the products they sell.

Your comments are 100% correct and I agree. I will add, as well, that I have ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS been burned on private auto purchases. I don't trust any private sellers at all-which is amazing since I definitely don't trust car dealers either. But with a dealer you do get an organization that will generally stand behind the car. I have absolutely had it with private sellers. Plus, despite what some say on KZbin, private sellers ALWAYS are asking more than what I can get teh same car for from a used car dealer. Finally, there actually are honest car dealers, as you said.

It's so unfortunate that these days when joking, you have to add something to it, otherwise people completely miss it. People have lost the basic ability to recognize a joke when 'lol' or 'tongue in cheek' or laughing emoji is not added.

I've bought dozens of cars in the last 45 years (I'm 69) and I like everything "Your Car Angel" has to say on this topic. I've asked all these questions in prospecting phone calls but never in such a methodical and logical sequence as he has presented. At my age, my used car buying days are mostly over (I have a 2016 Sonata Plug-in Hybrid and 2014 C-Max Hybrid SEL) but if I were buying again, I'd listen to every word this guy says.

The worst cars are those driven and owned by women specially under 50 years old. It means no maintenance was done on it and there is usually a hole on the carpet under the gas pedal. I am in the car business and I know what I am talking about. The most well maintained cars are those owned by men over 40 years old who have a stable job and family. Avoid repo cars at all costs. If they didn't have the money to make payments, it means they also didn't have money for maintenance.

I think a good question would be "do you have any problem with the car being checked by my mechanic?" Any hesitation or negative response, then walk away.. Any legitimate person selling a car in good condition shouldn't mind if he/she has nothing to hide (and if you're willing to go that far in your interest and expense, it also shows you're serious).

I disagree with dealer servicing being the best way to go... the dealership is where u are most likely to get robbed. I've also had dealers claimed they fixed an issue only to end up having to take it to a private garage and after telling the mechanic the issue he laughed at they dealers analysis and resolve and fix the issue for way cheaper ... I can give several other reasons... my advice find a reputable local mechanic!
@brianday13
@brianday13 5 жыл бұрын
Getting ripped off by the dealer doesn't matter if you're a potential buyer. I agree, they charge too much. But if you want to get a good used car, having it dealer maintained is a great indicator.(think about the garage kept step) After all, everyone knows the dealer is expensive and yet they took it there anyway. That's a good sign of a good owner that cared about they're car.. Getting OEM parts and fluids is great for the buyer too. Most independent shops are looking to save you money(through the aftermarket)OR make money on overcharging for parts they get from Autozone. Or both. Once you buy the car, take it to your local mechanic!

Juliette Rogers the only reason to do dealer maintenance is not to void warranty. And in case of buying genuine spare parts. Other than that, it is bad and ripoff. I have been attending/allowed to attend regular maintenance and the least i can say, appalling. Normally, you would pay for 3-4 hrs labour and in fact, it is less than 45min at its best. It is in dealer benefit not to do a good job for two reasons, either you keep coming back to them or you buy another a new car

Voice mail advice is spot on! The purpose of the voice mail is to get a return call, thats it. Its not to answer every question you might have. Ditto the text: My name is Bill, I am interested in buying your Toyota Highlander. I live in xxx, and can come by today at your convenience. Thanks! Potential buyers think there is some kind of "dibs" (I was first). Dibs are fictional. Responders that appear easy to deal with will jump the line, while the PITA potential buyers get put to the end of the list. Leave your questions for either in person or a phone call.

All good advice, of course. My experience with dealer "maintenance" has been less than good with my car having been sabotaged at least once. The car was in for some routine service and came back with the lug nuts severely over-tightened resulting in warped rotors. I weigh 180 and had to bounce on a 3' breaker bar to loosen the lug nuts when I replaced the rotors (myself). Asked a friend who used the same ("luxury") dealership and he was cheated but was unaware of sabotage, though he was not car oriented at all. Something I often ask friends about, and would ask any seller, is not only how often they change the oil and filter but who does it. If they go to one of the quick change places, I'm MUCH less interested in the car or will check it in much more detail for premature engine wear. What I want is someone who buys his own oil and filters and does it himself, like I do. I don't want to hear the he goes 20K between changes "because I use synthetic" stupidity. I also check the pH and conductance of the coolant. HOAT and OAT are usually pink or reddish, not green.

Buy a late 90's to early 2000's Nissan or Toyota and learn how to fix it yourself. Doesn't matter if you buy new or used, you will be making payments one way or another, either to the dealer, the bank, or to maintenance. The best part is with maintenance you somewhat get to decide when, instead of paying constantly and gambling your investment on a new car.

However the hood paint is pealing off and the front bumper is a little loose. I love it but i need to get a 4wd suv, it's just hard to sell it because it's manual shift and that paint condition.

This is extremely valuable information, I’ve used this and saved myself a lot of wasted journeys to see cars. Regardless of the car condition I’m always looking for 100% honesty from the seller, anything less and I’m walking away. I will add one small detail about high mileage cars with city miles which you may find useful. I lived in Thailand for many many years and I know a few Bangkok Taxi drivers.. some have taxis with well over 500,000 miles on them that are all city miles in the most awful conditions with extreme heat, terrible roads, and traffic queues from hell. Yet many of these Taxis (virtually all Toyota) are in mechanically sound condition and better in fact that a lot of cars with half the miles. In their case it’s all down to frequent and meticulous maintenance, so my feeling is that meticulous service records trump mileage in many cases. To be clear I’m not advocating buying an ex-taxi. I know a Bangkok hotel courtesy car which is a 1997 Volvo 940 with 1.2 million km on the original engine that’s only ever had a top end engine overhaul, if you ever stay at the Dynasty Inn in Bangkok it may still be there !

Hi Greg, I maintain my own cars, I do this because firstly I can, also because I can take my time and use my skills to be thorough, it is after all my car, and last but not least I can afford to use the highest quality fluids, because, my car, I love it. Do I expect this to increase my cars used value? Of course not. I'd value a dealer stamped service book over my own service every time. Why? It's not because I, or other passionate owners can't do a good job, it's because of what Greg said, a dealer will be more repeatable and more reputable (hopefully) than back yard Bob (me) for the majority. Even though I don't trust anyone other than myself to perform the scheduled maintenance on my car, I sure as heck don't expect anyone to give any credibility to my service skills, I'm un qualified, un trained and un certified. Basically the money I save on doing it myself I will happily pass on to the new owner. It's as simple as that. Greg knows his stuff, and he knows it well. He has no idea of how competent or not I as an individual are. But he has an idea how competent a dealer service department should be.

Hello Greg, I found you just in time. This is very valuable information. I'm in the market for a used car, preferably a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry or the sister car Lexus. I've owned a Lexus ES 300, but I'm partial to the Accord simply because it was my daily driver and it served me well, but at 264K miles the transmission is going rogue. I had a 7th generation 2004 model V6 and that generation was known for transmission issues. This process is taking awhile, I'm weeding through scammers and curbstoners, they're everywhere. My preferences are very specific as well so that extends the time it's taking me to find what I'm looking for. I'm finding less and less V6 Accords and Camrys, that poses another reason for this long process. That and the fact that people are holding on to their reliable Hondas and Toyotas longer. I'd really like to buy from a private seller to avoid the additional add on costs from a dealer. Just from experience, you live and learn, I've learned the questions to ask up front. I think that prevents wasting my time and the sellers time. In this process I've run across 'sellers' that will spew out answers to my questions UNTIL I ask for the VIN to get a Carfax report. All I get is crickets, to me that's a red flag, there's something on that report they don't want me to see. I've seen rebuilt and salvage cars that look brand new with very low mileage and the fact that it's rebuilt or salvaged is one of the last pieces of information that 'seller' relinquishes. Red flag! Those buyers that aren't aware can get taken for a ride. My Dad did mechanic work on the family cars as a way to save money and he taught my brothers as well. I picked up a few hints here and there because as a young girl I used to sit and watch them work on our family cars. I digress, but I wanted to applaud you for giving used car buyers some important pointers when in the market for a good used car. Tfs!

Buy cars on their MERITS, Not stories. I have been in the car business for over three decades(with several retail lots in my area), the questions are all relative to the market value, you should absolutely carfax a late model. For a under $2,500 car your money is better spent on a mechanical inspection. Ultimately you are buying the car on it's merits, if it is being sold by a broker, curber etc is inconsequential. People love to get hung up on why are you selling the car, it does not matter it is an open invitation for everyone including the original owner to "get creative" When you ask a ton of questions everyone from original owners to brokers, from savvy sellers to grandmas inherently think they are getting set up to be low balled. If the car interests you, just ask if it has a clean title, current emissions and go see it, you can carfax it while you are there. Evaluate the car, not the seller. I am remiss as to why you believe brokers are dead ends, good brokers have to buy the best cars that will sell fast and not tie up their cash, most are realistic to pricing and all they do is source all day.

Movin'Iron Me, 35 years in the business as well. I agree it is all about the car. However, if one is to have the best chance with the limited time that most people dedicate to the car buying endeavor then you should have a certain plan on asking specific questions. As veterans you and I can hash out the car very quickly. Where I live Curbers are notorious for picking up rejects at an auction and doing a fast fix'n flip. As a rule I recommend that the average car buyer increases their odds by calling on legitimate one owner cars that have a clear history. And by the way I always recommend carfaxing every candidate with one caveat; get a professional accident inspection by someone who knows how to do one, because we all know there are a lot of cars that have clean histories but have been previously damaged. Thanks for the reply.

You're absolutely right, most people totally overthink the inspection process and lose sight of the car's merits. Or do everything right and still end up with a lemon because they have no feel for what attributes make a particular car a good candidate. Thanks for your insight.

It's cheaper for my mechanic to inspect the car then to check carfax. Carfax would be my last step and I'd only do that if your 99.9% serious about buying the car and are suspicious for some reason. I think it's anywhere from $30-$50 per viechle carfax and if you have a couple viechles you're looking at it adds up pretty quick.

I want to buy a 2006 Cadillac DTS with 60,000 miles on it, good idea or bad idea? One owner car and the car has lived in Florida it's whole life with all service done at the Cadillac dealer where it was purchased. I know these North Star motors and Cadillacs in general are famous for problems and have expensive repairs. My second option is a 2006 Lincoln town car but I really want the Cadillac because of the name and status and plus I have always wanted one

I have a burning question. If anyone would be kind enough to help. I have a 2002 Honda Accord coupe. ULEV V tech 4 cylinder. Runs great now but has 162,000 miles on it. I'm old enough to remember when 100,000 and your car was done. What (on average , approximately) can I expect from this car? Do I not put a penny into it because it will likely conk out soon? Or may there be much life still in it? As I said it runs great now. Thanks in advance.
@brianday13
@brianday13 7 жыл бұрын
162.000 isn't that bad if you've maintaned it well. Is it an auto or manual transmission? If it's an auto trans, how often did you change the fluid, did you use honda fluid? If you changed your oil every 3-5K miles, that engine should be great for up to 300K+. Its the other parts of the car i'd be worried about. Honda auto trans must be babied to last.

If you walk up on a car dealer that has the VIN's covered up.... don't walk, RUN! They're hiding something. I have seen dealers and individuals do this. They get all pissy when you call them out on it too. If I see that, I will call you out! And also, do the numbers match on the dash, on the doors, under the hood, sometimes etched on the glass??? If not, the vehicle has been in a major accident. And does the VIN on the vehicle match the number on the title? A BIG item that many buyers miss. Never buy a vehicle without a title. That title shows ownership and/or any leins. You never want to buy a vehicle from someone who doesn't actually own it or you could have problems registering it or find out that you owe someone else money too because there was a lien on it.

@@mostmost1 yes great point. Even if you won't do the work yourself you will know all about it to help avoid getting totally ripped off. I do think the mechanics shouldn't be told how to do their job obviously. So if you out source you need to let them have most of the control. But if they know you know whats up they will be far less likely to totally rip you off.
