Greg - Your Car Angel looks at the three most popular used plugins that can be bought for under $10k. The first generation Chevy Volt, Ford Cmax and the Prius plugin hybrids are all presented comparing each plugin model with each other and highlighting the problems both as well as the good and bad. The battery packs in each one of these cars is configured differently and they all get different range on the electric charge.
Different topics are covered with the coolant pump problems with the Volt, the timing chain cover leaks on the Prius and the overall quality of the Cmax.
The first gen Chevrolet Volt ran between the years 2011-2015, the first gen Toyota Prius Plugin ran between 2012-2015 and the Ford C-max ran between 2011-2017.

yeah, I recently discovered this guy and it's refreshing to have a normal sounding person, who talks on his videos like he would talk to you one on one.. which I like. It's easy to like this guy.. he had a ponytail and I still like him ;)

Traded in my 2001 Corvette for a 2015 Volt. Best move ever. The amount I’m saving in gas alone pays for the car. It’s also built like a tank.

Sold my 2010 escape hybrid w 133,000 miles for 6,600 bought a 2013 volt w 52,000 miles for 10,500. Ive only had to fill it up twice in the 2 months ive owned it. I love it so far!

We picked up a brand new 2018 CT6E with 500 miles this past March. We like seeing almost 45 miles of range and haven't used gas since the dealership sent us away on a full tank.

Keeping my 2019 vette for occasional driving, but use my 2019 Volt for every day use and love it, it has been my 3 rd volt.

I had a 2011 Volt for 5 years before giving it to my son. Then I bought a 2018 Volt for me. Two of the best cars I have ever owned and Im' 57 years old. I've been through a lot of cars.

We had two 2013's and love them too. I traded one of them for a 2019. I like that one even more! I've had many cars too. I'm 71. They put a much better rear camera on the second generation and the dash and controls are arranged much better.

I love my 2014 Cmax Energi. Just got 80,000 miles on it. Super comfortable and even passengers enjoy sitting in the back.

@Grace Sullivan I don’t have the car anymore. But it gets 20 miles from the plug in part. I does sound louder going up large hills but that’s the engine working to get up the hill. The gas will kick in and gas engines do sound louder than electric so 🤷‍♀️

Have owned 3 volts, leased them all. Currently the 19 volt when the lease is up plan on buying it just loved them all. Too bad it went away otherwise I would have leases a 2021 at the end of my 19 lease

My volt has a special story My mother Wanted a red car and she liked the vault We sat in the car and I explained about it to her She did not like all the technology but she said I would love a car like this and she picked the Captiva instead Anyway my mother had passed and I had to take the Captiva in for service work and the only car they had to loan me was this red Chevy Volt The same exact one that we sat in I went back to the dealership wanted to buy it The dealership explained they could not sell it to me due to fact it was a general motor's loaner and it was not supposed to be sold to the public after going there every week to two weeks to ask them to sell me the car four months pass by and then as a birthday gift my father went to the dealership sat there telling customers that the dealer would not sell them a car that they wanted car dealership gave up told my father to tell me to come in and do the financing on my birthday That was November 4th 2017 The car is crystalline red

I have a 2013 C Max Hybrid, it's a great little car , and yes with very little storage. I love the way it handles and am relieved to know that people are getting many, many miles from these cars ! Thanks for the excellent video and everyone else for your comments !

We have two 2013 Volts. Very good and reliable! Good for 30-40 miles daily with no gas, but I drove mine cross-country and got 38 mpg. I've always liked hatchbacks. You get used to it's alleged shortcomings! Backup cam?? Who cares. I drove for 40 years without one.

Have had two 2014 Volts. Leased the first 1, bought the 2nd. Put performance tires on my current model (cost me 1 mile of electric range) and it sticks like glue. In over 90k miles between the 2 I replaced 1 set of tires, 2 sets of wipers and had 2 oil changes. Nothing else required and not a rattle or squeak in all that time. Most importantly I've not seen any degradation in electric range. Haven't put gas in it in 3 months.

I own a 2013 regular C-Max hybrid. Have had no major problems and really love the way it handles in traffic and the gas mileage. Very good acceleration and all controls are easy to operate. Currently over 140,000 miles and had the first rear brake job. Fronts are still original. Also, the first new set of plugs. Have had many new cars and this is the best by far. Getting over 40 mpg in summer. Ten years old and just replaced the 12-volt battery.!

We've got the 2013 C-Max Hybrid and have a very similar experience. Around 140K, just recently replaced the 12v battery. Still original brakes, though I may replace all 4 in the next couple years just because it feels like I should have a long time ago. Along with plugs for the same reason and maybe a transmission flush 🤷‍♂ I also agree that acceleration is very good at any speed - even more so if the battery is near full. Not gonna compete with a sports car or a newer full EV, but comparable to most full-size sedans. I don't get 40 MPG in this one, unfortunately (my last one did). The battery probably isn't what it used to be. Only thing I wish it had was the plug-in charger... Maybe next time.

I bought a 2013 volt for my commute to work 22 miles one way. I drove it in comfort mode, not eco, and a tank of fuel, 20-25 dollars, would last me more than 6 months at a time. My daughter drives it now, she is still going 4-6 months on a tank. Zero problems, one of the best cars I've ever owned hands down. Spend the money and get a 220 adapter at the house. It's 100% worth it.

The volt back up camera can be adjusted while the screen is on. Just turn the "Tune" knob. Also the reverse bulb sucks OEM but a quick change to LED changes the game completely. Also charge door unlock is only on 2012-2013 models, others are just a push open door.

I own 2 Ford C-Max’s. One is the plug in Energi. I used to have a 2010 Prius. I like the C-Max way more. I feel like it’s built better, it’s more comfortable and it’s been very reliable. One of them has 182,000 miles on it. I bought one for $9k and one for $6k

I just bought a 2013 ford c max sel yesterday, has 70,000 miles. Looks brand new. For 7,000. I was worried I made a mistake, but it seems well built and has no weird sounds.

Bought a plug in Energi for my wife 2 years ago, she loves that car and so far so good, no issues at all with it. The C-Max is a great used car buy, and I like that it's engine is bigger (2 liters) than a Prius. The C-Max may not be quite a fuel efficient as a Prius, but it is still an easy 45 to 55 (or more at times) MPG car, and it has something resembling pep when you step on it, and 80 MPH open highway cruising (I live out west where such highways exist) is relaxed. Our sister in law has a '12 model C-Max that managed to escape the transmission bearing issue that afflicted some of the early cars (fixed in later models) her car has almost 300K miles on it. As shown by that anecdotal story and also by the Toyota hybrids used in New York Yellow cab service, eECVTs are very reliable, I think quite a bit more reliable than "normal" automatic transmissions as they have far fewer moving parts. The C-Max shares it's general transmission design with Toyotas of it's vintage, Ford and Toyota had a cooperative agreement back then.

@@toddbenfield6546 I own a Model Y Tesla and I owned a CMax Energi 2013-2016. The Model Y feels much better than the Volt or Prius, The Model Y interior comfort is really good, about as good as the CMax Energi.

I have a '17 Volt as well, but I'm quite content with it. I work 30 miles (48 km) from home, and my boss let's me plug in at work. As long as I remember to set the charge level to 12 amps I always leave work with a full charge and went from spending $250 to $300 a month on fuel for my 60 mile round trip daily commute to not using a drop of gas (unless I take the kids to the coast for the weekend or something) and my electric bill has only gone up about $20. I don't see myself getting a Tesla anytime in the near future, that may change as prices drop on used vehicles, but I'm so completely pleased with the 2nd gen Volt, I just don't see any reason to upgrade.

I drove a 2014 Volt on a 3-week solo road-trip from Denver to explore Oregon and Washington State. This car was a rock star and when I would hit cities I would plug-in, pullout my folding Ebike to explore the city. I would come back it was fully charged to do more exploring. I have slept/camped in the back in 10 degree weather, left car on all night and burned about .50 cents of gas and gained about 5 miles of electric range and was cozy with heater on low. 6 foot tall and was able to sleep straight in the back and enough room for my dog too. Well built car, I use barely any fuel and 40mpg traveling from Denver to Portland and Seattle area.

I have been driving a Ford CMax-e 2015 very happy and thankful for all the excellent features. Comfortable quiet with reliability and without range anxiety. Lower center of gravity because of the batteries, makes it very stable for driving. Charges up in the garage easily. 12 gallons fill up about one or two times a month. Excellent daily driver. Cargo or grocery area in the back has not been a problem for us. Rear view backup camera very helpful.

A few things that Volt is better for me: Volt has a few perks: - A smart app that lets car set comfort temperature before you head out into the car. - Bigger battery and better range than the other two competitors meaning I never have to put gas unless I go out of town. - I only used 7.9 gallons of gas since I bought it almost a year now. - 150k battery warranty is really nice to have since my friend got a replacement for free I'm hoping to get it soon when I need it. In California, the battery warranty is enforced and protected so you will not lose that. - We drove a family of four fine in 1st gen volt, but none of us are over 6 feet tall. - Volt on sport mode is almost like a Tesla's performance - You hear people said plug-in hybrid are terrible on highway over 70mph. That's false, I drive around 80+ and it still speedy (of course can't compare that to a sports performance car) - Volt feels premium if not more than Ford C-Max (personal reference here) The bad thing about Volt: - 4 seaters - Blindspot in the front (but you'll get used to it in a week and know the way around it) - The backup camera is poor like 2/10. But I've been driving forever I'm used to turning my head around and look behind anyway. The camera does the job, you shouldn't be looking at the screen entire time while backing up anyway.

I bought a used 2015 Volt two years ago. I must say that your review of it is spot on. In the summer I get an estimated 50 miles of range out of a full charge, and in the cold winter my estimate drops down to about 34 miles, due to the energy used on the battery maintenance system. Most of my driving is less than 30 miles per day, so I rarely use gasoline. I've learned to move my head a lot when approaching corners due to the A post blind spots and I've added small convex mirrors to my rear view mirrors to account for the rear blind spots. I can also attest that the Volt's "infotainment" system is absolutely the worst I have ever had to deal with. I still cannot believe that it made it into a production vehicle. Infotainment controls aside, the Volt is a pretty good car.

I will say my vote goes for the Volt due to Looks, Battery/thermal management system, EV range, power, and overall the luxury solid drive on all electric - The Gen II Chevy Volt is affordable and a super choice

Pretty tough on the Volt, but I have to say it's all true. I've had my 2014 for over two years and absolutely LOVE it. I never use the dashboard controls. Instead I use the steering wheel controls and the touch screen. I'm able to use it ~98% electric, so I only spend $20/year on gas

@phillip miller our electricity costs are about $0.15/kWh, less if the sun is out. I get about 4mi/kWh.

@@JohnDoe-mx1sq I'm getting 4mi/kwh with my 2016 as well. My elect is around .08/kwh. I drive about 96 mi a day and able to charge at work. I see about $20 to 25 a month in additional elec costs. My monthly fuel bill to get to work went from about $165 (99 Honda Accord) to about (elec utility included) $35. Pretty close to what I had calculated before pulling the trigger on the volt purchase a few yrs ago. Sure, I took a major hit on depreciation but not having to frequently visit gas pumps, the significantly diminished maint. schld and the fact that the Volt is such an enormous pleasure to drive - it's still a great value.

What i found interesting after getting a 2017 volt is how many issues GM addressed. The charge cover is now unlocked, the dash controls have been simplified and the backup camera seems good to me

Thorough and well done. I own the 2015 CMAX Energi. Fantastic value when it was new, excellent reliability, and phenomenal fuel mileage at a lifetime of low 50's. I've been using it for Uber/Lyft and it's been a dream to drive, and passengers LOVE the interior. 87k in 5 years ain't bad.

@@austonhagedorn2283 The rear seat is roomy, and there is a lot of headroom in the C-Max. It is one of those cars that has more space inside than it's small exterior suggests.

@CJ Spooner // I still have the 2015 CMAX Energi but I don't drive it at all. A relative drives it daily. I drive a 2021 Honda Insight. My other hybrid (2017 Ford Fusion Hybrid) is being rented out in Florida for the past 2 years.

This is one of the best car videos I've ever seen. Kudos for succinctness and vocal clarity. I would add that on the Ford C-Max, the sunroof is only for sunlight, not air, as it will not open.

I drive a 2016 Ford C-Max Energi (30k miles, 222mpg lifetime, zero problems), Traded a 2009 Prius that was having a lot of problems after 100k miles. Anxiously awaiting 2022 F-150 in electric!

Excellent review. We have a 2015 CMax Energi and love it. Reduced trunk space has never been a problem. Would buy another if it was available. Lovely to drive. Suits our lifestyle really well.

I own a 2013 Cmax, and we love it. Just after 100,00 miles the electric range dropped significantly (~7-10 at 108k), but it still works as a great hybrid after that. I think your analysis of the trunk space is a bit off; it can easily handle a large number of grocery bags, and when you flip the back seats down (which is very easy to do), you can fit large things (e.g. a bicycle). Thanks for the great review. I appreciate your not claiming 'this is the best model,' but gather giving the strong and weak points of each.

I bought a leased 2013 Volt in 2015 for $16.5k for my wife. I like it so much that I bought a second Volt when my 2000 Acura TL start to cost money (at 315k miles) to keep running. Had these two Volts for 5 years now. Love them. They drive like sport cars. Did not have to pay for electricity since the company I work for pay for the electric charge.

I could plug-in at work for free too and with a 12-mile, one-way commute and make it back without plugging at home in our 2018 CT6E. I usually see middle-40's on the guess-o-meter but have always beat that with regen. When out 2017 GMC Acadia lease is up in little over a year I'd like to see my wife in a Volvo XC90 T8 but they are pricey new.

I loved my CMax Energi! Living in California with high gas prices, I only bought gas every three or four months. I loved the visibility, and it was large enough to move fairly large furniture. The voice activated interface was fantastic. It was a comfortable car for me and my large sons…my 6’ 5” son fit comfortably in the front and in the back with another large son in front. The only other car he fit in the back is a suburban. If they continued making the CMax Energi, I would have bought another when my largest son took my old CMax. I ended up with a BMW 330e…and miss my CMax!

Love my 2014 Volt. It is a better car than the 2nd generation. Build quality, materials, and comfort are why the original is better. It’s also more reliable - I’ve had zero problems in 100k miles. Only maintenance has been 2 oil changes. I can do 70% of my driving on electric. This includes trips from VA to NY and other long trips. Very comfortable and solid! And I bought it Certified Used, fully loaded with leather and all options, and only 2 years old for $16k. Fuel savings are bigger than my car payment. Pinch me. True about the A pillar.

I bought a 2013 C-Max Hybrid SEL (not Energi) brand new in October of 2012. She's now at 102,000 miles and, outside of the sluggish and clunky first generation Sync system, I have zero complaints about it. It broke my heart when Ford discontinued the C-Max because I was looking forward to upgrading to a Energi model down the line, especially now that the newest generation of Sync seems to be properly refined. My C-Max has had zero reliability issues and I can't recommend it enough as a comfortable, safe, and efficient vehicle.

I have a 2017 Cmax energy with 60,000 km, best car I ever owned, I’m averaging from April til November about 3000 km to 5000 km per tank or 1,5-2l/ 100 km; very comfortable and amazing torque!

I have a 2016 C Max no plug in. Bought new love love it. Handles well, drives great, n great gas mileage. Went for a country drive today went 27 miles driving 40 to 45 miles for speed n got 57 miles per gal. Normal on Highway is 48 to 50 per gal. Town is less say 30 to 35 per mile. Can’t complain

I have a mid 2013 cmax... I drive it about 100miles daily... not the plugin. As it is mostly country driving, I get about 36mpg. I spend about $60/month on gas... BUT... I fit In the car!!!! My neck is fused due to arthritis and I have very limited motion... I can get in and out of the vehicle painlessly. It is amazing, and life changing. I have had the car since it was new... and well it has been life changing, in an amazing way. I pay my last payment July 2020! It's been a wonderful vehicle which I will keep for as long as I can.

@@davemarsteller8377 Hi Dave, i just test drove a 2013 c max energi. Its under a private sale and Listed for 6k at just over 100,000 miles. I enjoyed driving it but the brakes were extremely sensitive and soft. Did yours have this problem? I wasn't able to have a mechanic check it out, but will if i pursue this car. 2 owners, with no documented mechanical issues in the carfax. Have you had any issues with yours since your last post?

@@rickystewart5500 mine has pretty sensitive brakes. I enjoy the feel. Instant stopping for me and at first I was worried but I got used to it pretty quickly. It's such a smooth drive.

@@rickystewart5500 sorry for the delay... all ford breaks seem to be like this my mom's edge and my cousin's escape seem to engage differently. However I got 80k off my brake pads and only recently (135k) needed a full brake job. The key, especially with the hybrid is to start stopping earlier with a slow continuous pressure on the brake (there is a braking coach mode in the cmax... this will help you with regenerative braking by increasing gas mileage most especially in city and mixed driving.) It has good anti lock braking that will panic stop you as you need to! But I have had to drive my parents in Dad's loaded Chrysler Town and country and they haven't gotten used to my hybrid braking style, which does work on their cars but they don't notice that I've started.well back and slightly and am slowly reducing my speed. So they think I am trying to kill them... lol (I am not and I love them!) My point is this is a feature not a flaw. Oh! I had one other odd issue... my windshield wiper motor died and cost an extra car payment about 450 to fix at dealer. You could probably part source and mechanic shop for a better deal. Weirdly, I suspect chipmunks because of the fact that I have driven it 300 miles since 3/19/20 when my university job went remote... I was driving 500 miles per week prior... now I work from home. So... my cmax wont accommodate my 6'8 #350 lbs dad safely for him because of his artificial knees and hips... so when taking him and my mom to dr. appointments I use his car (it COULD WORK FOR SOMEONE THAT SIZE WHO IS YOUNGER AND MORE SPRY. Ymmv.) Weirdly when it went, it didn't leave me high and dry, the passenger side.wiper.stopped, but my side stayed working which got me home and to my dealership... who I really like.. they are close and I am one of only 3 cmaxes I think they ever sold (rural farm ohio... fwd not a practical choice for my AWD needing farming/gearhead neighbors...) I got a great deal and give them mad respect for how well they have treated me. Feel the love Fairway Ford CANFIELD! :) I need AWD 3--4xs annually and mom lends me her Edge in exchange for gas and grocery shopping on my way home from work.

I love my 2017 Volt. I have put $20 of gas in the past year, (road trip). Charges in 4 hours and I get about 56 miles to a charge. I would buy another in a heart beat.

@M. L. "measly 40 mile range"? When the prius literally gets less than that, about 19 miles as the real world range. So you'll spend way more time using gas with a Prius if the commute is longer than a few miles

Great video. One thing to note ... The Volt was built from ground up to be a EREV/PHEV. This allows the vehicle to behave like a pure EV when the battery has a charge. The other two started as regular Hybrids, to which larger batteries and ability to plug-in was added. Also, the PiP did not get beyond 6 or so pure EV miles in real world.

I owned a C-Max - 2 of them. My lease was coming due and while I thought of buying it (when Ford discontinued the model). The battery seemed to be getting erratic and my dealer wouldn't handle it. So I turned it in and got a Chevy Bolt, all electric. Biggest mistake I ever made. The Bolt has none of the amenities that the C-Max just gave me. Navigation through On-Star only and that costs about $35. I only listen to NPR so Sirius isn't something I would want. The truck lid isn't automatic and no release button on the dash or on the key fob. The "trunk" is smaller. The interior room is comparable. The Bolt gets terrible mileage in the winter. Only charges to as low as 150 (and not 238), then uses more KWH per mile - like 5-10 to 1. I really hate this car and will get rid of it - the only hold back is that it cost so much and I would probably get so little. I never see others on the road in New England. I really resent Ford for stopping production of the C-Max, an excellent car.

Hey Greg, great video.... I am currently driving the last year of the first-generation Chevy Volt (2015). Absolutely Amazing! This car rocks. It is very heavy, and the car feels stable and solid. Quick as a rabbit! Easy to park, maneuver, and is a great city car. My car gets a little less than 40 miles of range on average per charge, by the way they fixed the charging door it can now be opened from the outside. This car is well built, no rattles or squeaks so far. Only downside is driving with the windows down is the most annoying thing about this car. This September I will have own my car for 2 years and only been to the gas station once and only because after a year my car actually told me that I needed to use the gas that has been in my tank for just over a year. It was full when I bought the car, now I only keep half a tank...why carry the extra 5 gallons around with me. I have only driven in "L" low gear since I owned it and at times, I will play with it in SPORT mode. Lastly, I Love, Love, Love how quite it is...I call it my Ninja mobile because it makes no noise. Mine came with Leather & Suede Seats, Navigation, Rear View Camera, Red Exterior with Tan Interior and Front Heated Seats. Best car I have ever owned, I would only trade it for a Tesla model 3.

There is an anti wind buffeting kit available for gen 1 Volts that will take care of the extreme wind noise when the windows are down. It adds a small projection to the inner side of each side mirror and an opposing one on each door. It was covered at no charge if you were within the bumper to bumper warranty or in my case the certified pre-owned warranty. I'm not sure of the cost once the warranty is over...

Greg, Thanks for the thorough overview of these three plug-in options. Although the first generation of Prius plug-in was not quite ready for 'Prime' time , I would still choose it over the others. The Toyota Prius is generally the most reliable car made by the most reliable maker of cars.

My 2013 C-Max is the first hybrid I’ve ever owned, although I carpool with two coworkers who each have the Prius. At 6’4”, 250 lbs, I feel very comfortable. Never felt very comfortable in the Prius. Currently at 123,000 miles, no problems and would absolutely buy again

I have the standard CMAX hybrid and i love it. I didnt get the plug-in model for the extra space and i have a mostly highway commute. There is enough room for 2 people to sleep inside, and i can fit 10ft pipe and a 6ft ladder inside. But what i like the most is it feels sporty like a ford focus, looks good, nice interior, and its not annoyingly slow.

I see your negative points about the Prius, but it isn’t that bad at all. The seats are very comfortable indeed, I never get tired on long drives, the mileage is great and the reliability is perfect. We’re on our second Prius (currently a 2010) and we never had any problems whatsoever.

The Prius also has a pretty nice amount of cargo and passenger space as well, but I genuinely hated how the one I had handled when driving. My first car was a Prius and there was a lot of give in the steering wheel before it started turning and the pedals felt weird, but it also had 300,000+ miles on it. I also don’t really like driving my brother’s Prius either, his has better steering, but there’s still to much give in my opinion, and his brake and acceleration pedals feel weird to me

In Europe, the C-Max is NOT marketed as a hybrid but as a "traditional" smallish minivan. In fact, there was speculation, for a while, if the C-Max would ALSO be offered as a gasoline only powered vehicle in the U.S. So, aside from using the Focus platform, it was not designed as a "dedicated" hybrid vehicle. BTW, I wasn't sure if I would watch this video since I didn't think that I was in a position to use a plug-in hybrid, but your excellent video may have changed my mind. If nothing else, it filled in previously unknown gaps in my knowledge about hybrid vehicles, and the plug-in variety in particular. Thank you.

I’ve had a 2014 CMAX Energi since 2016. I’ve averaged gas & electric combined 70 mpg most years. Very quiet and drives great. It feels more solid than a Prius. If I could get 40 to 50 miles on the battery it would be the perfect car.

We bought a used 2017 Cmax energi and couldn’t be happier. It’s been an amazing car. We bought it in 2020 for less than 15k out the door with only 25k miles. It’s at 90k now and zero issues. It’s driven daily and has gone on several road trips. Yeah, the trunk space it’s terrible, but we manage. My biggest gripe is the location of the 12v battery. It is a pain to change.

Same here - just got a 2017 C-Max Energi in January 2024 for $11,500 and OMG - looks and drives like it was brand new! After putting 3,000 miles on it in city we have only filled it up 3 times. Honestly I am amazed by the comfort and features of this car. Have a family of 5 and fits us all just fine!

We are a 2-Volt family (a 2017 premier-mine, and recently added a 2012 for our daughter) and I appreciate your fair, honest assessment of these vehicles. I’ve never driven the Ford, but in my experience the Prius feels like a golf cart. A highly reliable golf cart, but a golf cart nonetheless. We’ll stick with our driver’s cars. We love our Volts!

Angel's hair and Toyota's go hand in hand. But his assessment agrees with Car & Driver that found the Prime painfully slow compared to thr Volt. "...Using only the electric motors, the Prime hits 60 mph in 12.2 seconds. Merging onto a moving freeway proves to be a challenge, as it takes 8.2 seconds to go from 50 to 70 mph. When pressed to merge, the Prius Prime comes across as a big golf cart, which isn’t what you want when you’re aiming for a space between 18-wheelers...." At least GM is pushing out the old and making space for the new EV's we will see this decade. Toyota has no EV's planned...

And yes while the front console is confusing looking I think it adds a better scene to the car, not to mention it makes the car look more full rather than just having a minimized console like a lot of new cars have which kinda just makes the car look dull.

I absolutely love my 2013 Forx C-Max Energi! The gas mileage is incredible! And once you fold the seats down in the back you can stick plenty of crap in the back of this car! I've had mine for a couple of years now and I can honestly say I don't have any complaints about it. It takes a little used to, to get the hang of the handling but once you do, it manages great! I'd prefer my hybrid over a Tesla any day of the week. Plus I love my interior!

Got a 2017 Volt two weeks ago. It's labeled 50 miles on electric only, but with the regen handle on steering wheel, we can get 59 miles. Gas mpg on freeway is about 40 - 43. It's a wonderful car. I really love it.

I just bought a 2015 Volt with low mileage and am totally excited to join the Volt ownership gang. Now that my kids are grown, and are regular drivers living at home and going to University, I can't think of a way cooler car for them to use (and me of course) everyday, without the $100 fill-ups every week!

I don't know if my dad will comment, but he leased a Prius electric, and then when the lease was up got a Volt. My observations are in line here, and maybe not even worth saying, although I might be more polarized by the experience.. The Prius got amazing mileage. The Prius was awful to drive, anywhere, all the time. Hard no-feel steering wheel, hard knee touches, hard seats, detached steering feel. I remember nothing that felt good. I said it was like riding in a train, but you are driving - sort of. It felt like there was little reason for you to be there, and the perfect excuse for automated driving (why even stay awake...). Even the steering wheel position felt like an afterthought. Dad didn't choose to buy it, surprisingly to me, because it really got amazing mileage. He next got the Volt as another electric car experiment. This one was a used first gen. The Volt drives nice - really nice actually, and is actually kind of pleasing. Nicely weighted steering, feels balanced, taught and solid. Feels like someone thought about the driver, whereas the Prius thought nothing of the driver. The Volt is a way better drivers car - it is a driver's car. The Prius is, I don't know. Transportation? Take the train, then you can read a book at least.

I bought my 20 8:31 17 C max Energi off lease with 37K on it. This car is a lot of fun to drive and is pretty quick and handles very well . I drive less than 20 miles a day and I’ve been at the gas station only a dozen times in 22 months. I love it!

Greg Not a bad review but the Volt is NOT a PHEV like the others. It is the only Extended Range Electric Vehicle in the group. This is important because it does not have a transmission to be serviced as the others do. Also it does not jerk when the engine starts as the drive is always electric.(There is that 5% torque feed in specific circumstances). Because people write that the Volt is a PHEV everyone who has had the displeasure to drive or drive in a PHEV think that the Volt must do the same jerk on motor start. It would have been nice it this was noted in your video.

Ex-Prius owner here. Thanks for the reviews. There are 2 important points everyone needs to consider about the Prius. 1- There is an amazing amount of animosity toward Prius' and their owners. Buy one and you will be hated, despised and ridiculed by a surprisingly large number of normal, calm people. 2- For some reason Toyota purposely designed the Prius with ZERO driving fun or pleasure, and poor overall driving and seating ergonomics. If you're a Prius fanatic good for you, you can choose to overlook all this. But for regular people, every mile in the a Prius is a sentence, not satisfaction. I'm also compelled to state the obvious. These Plug-In **HYBRID** vehicles are not and never were "electric cars with back-up gas generators." They are and were always **hybrid** gas/electric cars, with oversized battery packs. There's nothing wrong with that, but to deny this is at best technically ignorant, or at worst an outright lie.

I’ve ownTesla Model 3 and after a year I have lost 4 miles range due to battery degradation . I also own a 2013 Volt, I still get 34 ev miles on freeway from original 38 ev miles . That’s only 4 miles lower after 7 years! I love both cars, chevy volt 1st gen was a technical achievement for GM. No one knew until now 7 years later!

@@racerd9669 not true, los of us knew, the g1 volt had a bunch of high quality Japanese parts and was engineered with little expense spared. GM does batteries better than Tesla and sold the volt at a loss, people who dont drink koolaid knew the volt was special. GM knew it too but if no one buys it they won’t sell it.

I test drove all three of these in 2013 and the C-Max was just the best to drive, had the best interior and was easily the most spacious for passengers. It was also the best highway cruiser with the most comfortable ride and it had the quickest passing speed above 70 so kicking up to the 90-100 left lane Florida speeds for passing center lane hogs is a peice of cake. This makes sense because the C-Max is actually from Euro Ford not just a lifted American focus like the guy in the video thinks. They were in Germany on the autobahn far before they came to the US shores so this car was built to see much higher speed cruising speeds than the others. I was really impressed with its handling despite it being a tall car. We bought it new in 2013 and my wife still daily drives it 50+ miles every day. The paint still looks new and the interior has held up really well. Even the seats look almost new with little care. The battery being ten years old has lost a bit of range but that's to be expected of any battery. The only real issue we've had is excessive wear of the rear inside tires (no camber adjustment for the rear). But I put a pair of moog adjustable rear control arms on it for about 80 bucks and the problem is solved. It even gets an extra one or two MPG now over the factory alignment.

Oh wow that's fascinating about your rear control arm mod. I always hear about the uneven tire wear and they think it's an alignment issue which is annoying. It's the battery weight. Good to know! Also heard that it gets increased performance on premium gas, lol! I like the cmax's performance, especially for a hybrid. I own the fusion hybrid as well and they're both excellent. I have beaten hemi trucks before and it makes me laugh 😂😂

@@AustinRides7264 I haven't noticed an increase in performance with premium but after removing the super restrictive air box and installing a custom straight cold air intake on the car it runs better on 89. I was actually a little amazed at how much more power the car makes now especially merging onto the freeway. After custom tuning and working on sports cars since the 90's I would guess it added 15 HP, which is noticeable. I was a little disappointed that it did not increase fuel economy but that's to be expected with more air in and the increase in power.

@@brdavis hey that's a nice power bump! My fusion hybrid has around 225k miles and I recently added some premium gas, I had less than a quarter tank of regular left. The power increased tremendously! I punched it from 40 and the car had wheel hop after 50! Lol. Or today I was trying to get over into the left lane to turn when the light was green and I screeched the tires real good in a straight line and fish tailed some 😂 I wasn't giving it full send either. Quarter throttle maybe. My theory is it's probably cleaning up the carbon buildup. I know they put detergent in regular 87 but it seems to clean it out better. My cmax only has 120k miles. Maybe I'll do the intake mod like you did. A little extra power never hurt no one! 😄 I wonder if there's any tunes for these hybrids. Probably not. That's cool you're a tuner and car guy. These hybrids make for very reliably daily drivers that's for sure. I've used mine for Uber for quite some time

I've owned my '13 Volt over 4 yrs. One of my favorite things with it being a 4 seater is my medium sized dog can move from the front seats to the rear cargo area especially when all seats are taken. I find the car's sensors make up for the large pillars, they also mark objects on the reverse camera you may hit, so I disagree about it being useless. Mine was built in June of 2012 and to this day everything on it still works including the 12v battery. The Volt is definitely a plugin that can be your only car as mine has been until November 2020 when I added a new Bolt EV. My Son will be getting the Volt now but I still love driving it. Lastly, regarding the controls on the center stack, they are mostly short cuts for things you can do on the screen or steering wheel, so it's less confusing than it looks and the locking charge port can also be released from the key fob, no need to go back in the car. I enjoyed this review, thanks.

I bought a used late 2015 premium Volt and I love it. I’m probably getting gas every three weeks now with my commute and driving combined. I charge at home and at work and still get the full 60 mile range when temperatures are good

Volt has been great. I just replaced the 12v water pump as you mentioned at 82,000 it was buzzing loudly. Easy 1 hour fix. Pump was 137.00 genuine GM part.

I bought a used 2013 volt in 2019 when I lost my gas car in a traffic accident, and boy, let me tell you- I LOVE the volt. My only regret is that I didn't buy a newer one with all the options! It's not a car without problems (the t-bone battery bump in the back is rough if you have a dog, the dashboard is a nightmare, and you are absolutely right about the blind spots) but damn does it do what it sets out to do EXTREMELY well. It's astonishingly efficient in all sorts of situations. I once got 50 electric miles out of it- a 2013 volt with 50,000 miles on the battery, mind you- in stop and go traffic on a slight downhill incline.

I wanted a compact car hybrid to try out an EV and save money on gas. Recently bought a 2013 c-max energi and I really like it. The interior is very nice. The handling feels great, though the turn radius is limited. Fast charging takes about 2.5 hours while slow charging takes 7 hours. I had to get used to the gas engine turning off in slow or stopped traffic. The trunk is good for groceries and small storage. The 12v normal battery is located in the back under the high voltage battery. It takes more time to remove the 12v because of a couple layers that have to be removed. I drive an hour to an from work each way and the mileage on gas is about 34. The highest I've gotten it with a recharge everyday is almost 41. I like the features though my car doesn't have the auto lift gate. When it gets really cold the touch door knob feature doesn't seem to work. Some of the touch screen features aren't usable or don't work anymore. The info the car gives about driving, braking, and mileage is nice. All in all a really good car.

I considered a Volt, but I really needed to be able to fit 3 across in the back. In the end I went full electric with a 2015 Kia Soul EV. I figured I only get to count the savings from gas towards my first EV/Plug-in purchase and if I was going to do it then I might as well avoid the extra maintenance costs of a Plug-in. My car is only for commuting since all distance driving is done in a Ford Transit van to accommodate my large family. It's been a few months and I'm happy so far. The biggest downside is the lack of liquid thermal management on the battery/charging system. We'll have to wait and see about longevity, but the 10yr/100,000mi warranty gives me peace of mind for the next 4-5 years. During that time it will completely pay for itself in gas and maintenance savings compared to the gas guzzling Lincoln Navigator I was driving around. Sounds like everyone out there is really happy with their Volts! I'm glad to see more and more affordable used EV (full and Plug-in Hybrid) options on the road.

Nice review. I've driven all three and had very similar reactions to them. I bought a 2013 Volt a couple of years ago after driving a lot of different cars. It only had 50k miles and included a 240V level two charger and I paid $12,500. It's cost me almost nothing to own thanks to free public charging in the parking structure at my office. The level 2 charger in my garage comes in handy on weekends. I agree, after 2 years I still don't find the touch-sensitive buttons on the center stack easy to use. I'd buy a second Gen Volt for the revised interior, alone, but mine is paid for and hasn't had any issues, so I'm in no rush. The charging port access wasn't ever something I noticed. I usually just hit the open button on the inside of the door as I'm getting out of the car after pulling into my parking spot. There is also a button to open it on the key fob. I have heard stories about the power release failing on older Volts, which does make me question why they used such a complex solution to opening and closing it. When I first got the Volt I was worried about the back seat space, but my kids say it's very comfortable and in general I find the seats very comfortable in front, too. Granted, I'm only 5'6, though my 16 year old son is 5'9" and he fits in the back just fine when needed.

Cool video I own the C-MAX I love how close to a focus this car is with just under 150k on my car I was able to hop up my c max suspension with ST focus parts changing this car into a canyon carving beauty. The extra room allows three kid including one in a car seat to ride comfortably and I will attest to the quiet ride make the Prius sound like a paper machete box

I wish information regarding the c-max's long term reliability and drive train stability was more available. So far I'm gathering that 150k+ miles is to be expected which is excellent, but that surely doesn't come without problems. What's your experience with this? Thanks.

Bought the car with 60k last year and now it has 120k it is a 2013 I have done my regular oil changes between 4000mi to 5000mi the 12v battery had a bad connection ones and made the car go all kinda crazy thought I may have a major problem but tightened that up the care was perfect again now The good -Alot of room -May of parts are the same as the focus and other ford platform including oilf filter -The informant is nice and gave you a feeling of a normal car -The car is quiet and even whith the milage it still really quiet hard to drive other cars - EV to Gas transition seamless with almost no notice other then a little noice -The under floor storage is use full for small items The bad - no spaire almost lost me stranded 3 times - roof racks kill fuel economy go from 35mpg highway to close to 20mpg combined with small fuel tank realy reduces rang - small fuel tank - some of the carpet and pics in rear are not a durable and your average focus but I have kid and use this car like crazy And the big bad is this car is now no longer being built but every thin I see the ecape hybrid uses the same drive system and has been sense they brought out hybrid with small updated

My daily commute is 20.7 miles one way. My 2015 volt can handle there and the drive home on a single charge. It’s an amazing machine, I haven’t bought gas in months. When my friends complain about gas prices, I honestly don’t know what it costs.

We are a 3 C-Max Energy Family, Love the Car it's nice to pick up a $6,000 car that runs great very dependable and gets 100 mpg. Highly recommend them nothing against the Volt I'm sure there fine too but I can recommend the Ford they have all 3 been flawless for us. Oh did I mention they are pretty fast and fun to drive, it's fun to pull up along side a Hemi and leave it in the dust:)

I have a 2012 Volt with 125,000 miles. The only repair it's needed outside of regular maintenance was having the wiring replaced for the coolant level sensor, which was poorly installed during that recall campaign. I believe after 2012 the coolant level sensor was factory installed and wouldn't present the same issue. I love my Volt, it does great around town and gets great gas mileage on longer trips.

my 2014 Chevy Volt since November 4th 2017 I've used 32.5 gallons of gas and drove the car over 20,000 miles I have never had an issue with the backup camera you'll learn to drive looking around the a pillars I am 6'3 tall I do not have much of a problem sitting in the car or getting out I've driven both the C-MAX and the Prius and their crap Other than a fogging headlight I have never had a problem with the car and General Motors took care of that problem promptly

Been driving my C-Max since 2015, feel no need to upgrade yet. It's been super reliable and comfortable. At the time I was cross shopping with the Volt and just could not bear the Volt's poor visibility.

Your comment on the back-up camera actually refers to the fact that you did not clean the camera lens. Clean it if the view gets blurry. and you'll be fine to back up. Also, the sonar in the bumper helps you to avoid back-up errors in tight quarters. Otherwise a great review of three practical cars that can save people a boatload of money.

2018 Volt is the BEST 👌 I drive 120 miles a day. Charge at work for free and charge at night while sleeping. The 8 gallon tank lasts one month. I love my ⚡️ Volt. Depending on how I drive I can achieve 45 miles to 60 miles on one charge! Fantastic Car! 💪

I would vote C-Max first. Although I prefer the Hybrid, not the plug in, it does not have the battery taking up space in the back. I do a lot of long distance driving, I like quiet. I like a tall roomy cabin with good visibility. The others are small. I like the C-Max seats, they are like a little mini-van. The others are down on the floor. And when I need to pass someone on a two-lane road I want V-6 performance. C-Max is a little rocket. The others make more sense around town.

yeah the energi doesnt make sense for long highway driving, the electric sucks up real fast. the energi cmax is good for around the town on electric.

Volt assessment is fair, but there's a few things worth noting. The power cover on some model years can be opened from outside; on the 2015, it doesn't lock, and on the 2011/12, there's a button on the fob that opens the door. Later models retasked that button to "ignore delayed charging/start charging now". 2013 has the worst camera of the entire Gen 1 Volts. There's been three different cameras in the four-ish model years. 2011/12 have a camera that is pretty decent in bright lighting and has steering markers and lines measuring about every 2 feet back from the bumper. 2013/14 (and some very very late 2012s) has no lines at all and that overall just bad camera with glares spots. 2015 gets a camera with the measuring lines back, but they don't steer, and improved picture in low light. The battery capacity also improved, though Chevy never bothered getting new EPA testing done to brag about it. The battery capacty went from 10.4 to 10.9 to 11.5ish at about those same refreshes. Other differences include 2011/12 not being able to stream music over Bluetooth, but the premium sound/nav coming with a 30GB hard drive that you can store music on (including music coming over the radio) and the ability to play DVDs. 2013 and later added a "Hold Mode" that allowed drivers to preserve the current charge level and turn the engine on early. This allowed longer trips to invoke the engine on the highway portion of a trip, for example, when it's most efficient and save the remaining charge for city streets driving later.

I bought a 2017 Volt last year (15 months) and they fixed some of the issues you name. - The backup camera has a good resolution and I have only had glare on it one time that effected visibility. I can clearly see what is going on behind me even at night. - The charge door pops open from the outside when you push it so no need to enter the car to plug your cable in. - I get about 50 miles on the electric, driving 24 miles to work and 24 back home. I have sometimes had 10 miles left on the battery, sometimes 2 depending on the traffic speed. - The instrument panel is all consolidated to one LCD screen, with only air having its own knobs and buttons. But it is easy to use and understand. So far except for a couple of bad parts that were still under warranty (0 cost to fix at dealership) its been a wonderful ride. Fast, responsive and has cut my gas costs to almost a $100 a year. Its only that high because I used it for a couple of vacation trips. Since it is discontinued I will be looking to upgrade to the 2019 model so I can keep using it longer. I HIGHLY recommend a Volt especially if your commute is under 50 miles a day.
