Suzanne Collins actually did state in an interview that she got the idea for the "Hunger Games" by flipping through channels on her TV and saw a reality TV show, game show and the news and did indeed mesh all of them together as she felt at the time this is kind of an interesting take on where our society is headed. I don't recall if she mentioned (or could) which specific shows she watched, but yeah I'd say the Bachelor is probably a high contender lol.

There are actually rare times where the contestants themselves get together (which makes sense, because the contestants spend more time with each other than they do with the actual bachelor). One of the most dramatic instances was on the Bachelor Vietnam, where during the rose ceremony, one of the contestants, Minh Thu, declares her love for her fellow contestant, Truc Nhu. There's some back and forth whether Nhu will leave, but eventually she does, and the two of them are still together.

There's enough of this kind of stuff in real life, I don't need it in my 'entertainment'.

Not looking someone in the eye or ignoring someone because you are have trouble processing auditory information and do not hear them is not "bad behavior" this is something a lot of people with ADHD genuinely struggle with. It sounds super tone deaf of you to then say dont use your mental illness to excuse your bad behavior. ADHD brains work differently than neurotypical brains and this woman was explaining this.

Yes, thank you! Videos like this are doing nothing to help the stigma surrounding mental health, especially ADHD. I’m actually pretty mad about this.
@shanghaiallie2 жыл бұрын
Yes agree. I'm autistic and neurodiversity is not a mental health issue - it's a neurological difference. When I'm trying to concentrate on what someone is saying, I often stop looking at them directly or even close my eyes to limit other sensory inputs and focus on the sound of them speaking and people regularly interpret this as being rude or not paying attention. I don't think explaining to other people your communication style when it is different to what a neurotypical person expects is the same thing as blaming your rudeness on mental health issues. Of course, I refuse to ever watch this show so there might be additional context - she could just be a super rude person and not actually neurodiverse.
@SingingSealRiana Жыл бұрын
Also getting very focused on one thing so you miss others can be an adhd thing so if your in a passionate conversation about a topic you are into you just lose awareness of someone else around and miss to include them... Her explanation made genuine sense in regards of add/adhd
@SingingSealRiana Жыл бұрын
@@AnnaLeighMusic the fact the explanation makes sense does not change, that from the looks of it, she did use it as an excuse and that's what really is harmful. I agree with everything you said. I wish you had explained though that what that contestant was describing is a struggle for some who have ADHD. I think she was trying to explain that she didn’t mean to ignore the other person and that’s how her brain works. And then the other person goes and blows it up about red flags to Clayton. Haven’t kept up with this season, so I don’t know who they’re trying to paint as the “villain” for this one.
@amelia207172 жыл бұрын
I wish that Jono had watched a bit more of the episode as it actually provides way more context (keeping in mind it’s edited). On the group date (themed around red flags), Shenae pushes Liz down and out of the challenge. Then at the night portion Shenae is ready to grab Clayton to chat but Liz asks him first and she gets all pissed off and huffy. She talks with another girl and in a interview shot about how threatened she is by Liz and how fake she links she is and how she “can’t wait to throw up on Clayton about Liz.” The way it is presented is that Shenae wants to sabotage Liz’s chances. Then she tells Clayton what she does and lies to the other women about it, and talks to Liz citing her ignoring her… And most important, we didn’t get to see their THIRD conversation about it Shenae wanted to have because she got “weird vibes” and Shenae starts coming at Liz and tells her that little kids have ADHD and everyone has ADHD and you know she does too and suggests Liz was exaggerating/faking. I think the extra shots we get in the episode, especially the last incident, definitely paint Shenae as in the wrong more clearly than those in the video

I agree with what you said about not using mental illness as an excuse for how you treat others, but you missed a lot of context leading up to this. I think you should have watched way more that happened before this conversation. Shanae was flat out lying simply because she was jealous of Elizabeth. She made up, what was probably a false story, or a twist on the truth that she concocted in her own mind, and used that to try and take down Elizabeth. When Elizabeth explained her ADHD it was to explain to her that that may have been the reason why she didn't respond to her because it's hard for her to focus. It was an explanation to create an understanding between them, to make Shanae realize it wasn't intentional. If you had watched what happens after this you would also see that Shanae handles this so poorly and mocks her AHDH even more as the episode goes on. It's awful. I think Elizabeth was genuinely trying to stay clam while also remaining stoic and unmoved by Shanae's antics. (Also, this is purely entertainment and I also agree that this is NOT what we should aspire to when looking for love. Lol.)

You needed more context for this. First off, many of the contestants end up being good friends with each other (but not the ones involved in drama like this). Second, your production team edited in here the clip of Shanae unnecessarily pushing Elizabeth over during a race earlier in the episode. They should've showed you that clip, because it would've given you the much needed context that Shanae was in the wrong for the entire episode. Elizabeth's ADHD was a valid excuse for the bullshit Shanae was trying to push. I'm also surprised you didn't mention how bad it was for Shanae to mention the ADHD in front of everyone.

Telling someone else you are AMSD ("ADHD") ist NOT to make others feel bad!!!!! Wtf???? This coming from a therapist? I'm shocked! (I still love you!) But I'm shocked! AMSDs get misunderstood so so so so so many times a day and no one cares about it! People always assume we're lazy, rude or making up excuses! We're not! We are overseen every day over and over again. And in the end the only person who helps us deal with it is ourself! So if we share how our brain works with you and we're open and bold and try to communicate with you to help prevent misunderstandings: Don't laugh about us! Don't judge us! Just listen and think what ever you want but accept our feelings and our experience of ourselves! Just like you'd accept any one else that you understand. You don't have to understand us. Just believe and accept. Don't assume the worst. This will make the world so much better for everyone! 🙏💕 Thx for your time! *AMSD = Attention Motivation Stimulation Divergency

I think in the context of that conversation, she may very well have brought it up to get out of whatever she had just done. In this setting, the entire point of many of these conversations is absolutely to manipulate and gaslight each other in order to "win". Absolutely AMSD and other mental struggles are not a joke, but this show? A joke for sure, and full of manipulation, smoke & mirrors.
@maevereynolds63442 жыл бұрын
@@LifeIsScrumptious no, she was being honest & very vulnerable ab a stigmatized, misunderstood disability. She described exactly what ADHD looks like for most people, especially in high stimulation environments. She's trying to explain that her brain literally couldn't process in that moment that the other woman was trying to talk to her. If a friend waves at you when you're turned looking in another direction, are you being rude & two-faced for not waving back? No, you just didn't see them wave so you didn't know there was anyone to be waving back at & that's not your fault! What's more, later the other woman goes on to ignorantly & callously mock, mischaracterize, & dismiss ADHD, which she clearly has no understanding of, nor any desire to learn bc she wants the narrative that is sympathizes w _her_. Regardless of the show as a whole being a joke, the core misunderstanding that takes place btwn these women here is a realistic to what people w ADHD & other neurodivergent people have to navigate in every day life. I very much appreciated Elizabeth being brave enough to be open ab an aspect of ADHD that most people don't know or don't understand.

I just can't. It's sickening. I've watched our German version one time and some snippets when nothing else was on TV. Any version of an American show in Germany is more humane and decent, sorry America! Even the ones that are abysmal are still worse in the American versions. Because there's even less communication happening. It was a rather shocking thing to find, at some point. Cause then I thought ours were bad and it couldn't possibly get worse. So when they do treat each others like humans and do indeed have a friendly competition with dynamics like "May one of us be happy and let's either way be decent" then it can be interesting. Just in the sense that you can see mature handling and immature handling of problems. Overall the concept is ridiculous. There are other concepts where they bring ppl together via science and see if they fit or formats when people are matched. But it's then one on one dates and simply chances to get to know each other. Everything else only makes me think "flesh market". It's just incredibly shallow clumsy trough matchmaking. And a looooot of money is made from the desperation of people to find partners. It's about time to question the whole concept of "needing a romantic relationship". And things like the rush to get bonded because "the female biological clock is ticking". We've got overpopulation worldwide! If someone has a very strong urge to have kids, that's alright. But very often we are not brought up to question where it comes from and if it really is for us or not. On the contrary, we've grown habits of implying sth. is supposedly off if ppl don't partner up at some age and couples don't get to producing offspring. 🤦♀️ 2022. I'm sorry, ancestors. What you fought for - with us in mind - has partially become true, but we've messed it up big time yet again. 😅

I know some people here in Germany who have been on dating shows and at least the ones I talked to aren't even as interested in dating, they are there for clout. Not all of them definately, but Sone realized that there is some thin possibility for having a career based on trash TV. They use it as a marketing strategy. You are absolutely right, it is far from highbrow entertainment, but some people are smart enough to use that for themselves... I personally don't aspire to that either, nor do I think you should... And I do to 100% agree, there is NOTHING wrong with being single. Sometimes it is better to be single than being with an abusive ass or someone who simply won't fit just for the sake of being in a relationship. About kids, I personally like the idea of adoption a lot. They don't have to be genetically related to me to be my kids and you can give so much hope and a great life to a foster kid!

Hearing a therapist say that someone is playing the “mental health card” to “get away with being mean” is really disheartening. And watching a therapist laugh as someone’s mental health diagnosis is outed to a group of people is very sad. It seems like this is what happens when you go into watching a show already deciding that you hate not only the show but every person on it. Comes off slightly misogynistic to be honest. And as someone who enjoys watching the bachelor I can assure you that we know it’s trash when we watch it and we still like it and we are allowed to like it! :)

I've enjoyed your content before but I had some issues with this video. I hope this can be constructive feedback: I completely understand your response to the ridiculousness of the show. However, I wouldn't discount the human emotions that come from it. Wouldn't it be possible that a client can come to your office struggling with a friend who is fighting for the attention of the same love interest? Yes the show has extremely contrived scenarios, but it seemed like you couldn't get over laughing about them to see that these contestants are dealing with attachment and communication issues just like anyone else. Also, RBF is meant to describe a woman's face when it is in a completely relaxed state, not the side stare or face of contempt that you're describing. It's sexist because of how it specifically judges women as frigid and bitchy based solely on their natural facial features. It makes women feel they can't be themselves and must be smiling/performing in order to be perceived well by society. In a related note, I wonder why you made a comment about Elizabeth looking like "she's never smiled before"? She was in the middle of a conflict. Could that be a coded way of saying this woman appears unlikeable? And if so, it could illustrate the point that you're unknowingly expecting a woman to perform warmth even in situations that don't call for it.

The point of the Bachelor and the Bachelorette isn't to find love, it's to get famous.

When I was a teen, I wanted to go on the Bachelor to go to the different locations and do the different adventures that they did; while having someone else pay for it. Lol.

I love your content and you are a fantastic therapist but I feel lke you are out of your depth here with the ADHD comments. What Elizabeth said made a lot of sense in terms of her ADHD - I don't think she was being shitty, just losing focus because she was not engaged. This is something people with ADHD struggle with and on the flip side they hyperfocus on things thye are interested in, which to a neurotypical looks abnormal. I was recently diagnosed and SO many unrelated struggles in my life came to be recognized as parts of the ADHD brain - including zoning out and coming back at various times and on the flip side, being hyperfocused on topics I am intersted in. I know a lot of therapists don't know enough about ADHD, often misdiagnose it (ask quesitons like 'did you do well in school') but Jonothan, I think you need to do better to learn more about ADHD and how it affects people's lives a lot.

My husband and I watch this the day after it airs on Hulu - we call it Trash-Fire Tuesday. The show is such trash, but we love it.

I only watched one season, the one with the blond and fireman who actually made it. It’s so cringe I can’t even watch as a “guilty pleasure!” Ooo, but I do watch those two Jersey blond twins. Therapize that show!! I always do when I watch 😂

I remember watching an episode or two when it first started. Those women were straight up mean to each other. Much more "real" but still trash tv. I think I'd prefer the old way to be honest.

In girl world, we have to pretend we like each other and mostly get along, even if we hate each other’s guts 🙃 which makes for some interesting fights + reality tv entertainment
