My goal is to become a SEW too. I'm the first in my family to actually work towards a career like this. Also a first gen college student. Both my parents were immigrants so didn't have much support in that aspect. I wish I had known earlier when I was 18 that this is what I wanted to do, but I spent a couple years working some dead end jobs to figure out that's exactly what I don't want my life to be like. I guess my biggest problem was figuring out what I wanted to do as a career. Being 18, it was the hardest decision. I didn't have the money to just go to university not knowing what degree to pursue. I knew I wanted to make good money, but also do something that can have more good days than bad. I wanted to use my brain rather than break my back. I'm 22 now and luckily all the previous college credits I've taken back while in highschool and out of HS are counting towards a bachelors, I have about 1.5 years of core classes to take and that'll at least knock off the bachelors so I can say I did that. In this 1.5, my goal is to also learn outside of school so by the time I graduate I can at least have a couple projects in my portfolio and that'll hopefully get me a job quickly. Even if my first job isn't the greatest, just getting to the point of saying I did the work and became a SEW is something I look forward too.

I agree, it's super hard to know what you want to be doing when you're only 18, or even 22. And 22 is still really young! You're in a great position that you know what you want to do, you know what you have to do to get there, and you have a plan. You're doing a great job. I'm sure you'll reach your goal 👍
@nielskersic3282 жыл бұрын
I agree completely! One addition to your first point is that we get to work with some of the best software out there. Lots of people are forced to work with crappy software every day, but if software engineers are unhappy with the tools they need to use, they just build better ones!

Hey Jon. I’m doing backend dev now, but always wanted to dive into Android dev. I have couple of questions. Is the interview different for android devs? For example, do they have to build an app in the interviewing rounds?
@yourfriendintech2 жыл бұрын
Hey Mohamed! It depends - each company will look for different things in their interviews; but in general I think building an app would be too much for an interview. But you may get asked how you would build an app so they can test whether or not you know how to build one.
