Folks want the easy road to success. That's not why I'm here. I'm here to give you truth and show you a way to make a success of yourself. Hendrix would not have to practice, if talent carried him. Believe that talent gets you where you want to go and you will never get there. Practice the right stuff, and you WILL get there. Read " The Outliers" for a great overview and FULL explanation of this.

+Professor Bagel Sure I have heard the term, but name one deemed a "prodigy" that had mediocre practice habits. Hendrix, Van Halen, Michael Jordan only became great when they said, THIS is what I will do with my life and I will be better than all the rest and then practiced more than their talk of being great.

If I may add: don't be afraid to take a break. In my case the break was like 10 years - by the end of my first stint I hated guitar, was burnt out. Over time this faded and one day I really wanted to do it again, and it was a joy. The skills don't vanish either, it's like getting back on a bike, your body just remembers.

I’ve been playing keys for 20 years and am very advanced and I just started tying to learn guitar because it’s still my favorite instrument that always speaks to me but I get so frustrated trying to stretch my fingers to fit certain chords and change shapes so fast. I find myself thinking “this is so annoying how the hell do these guys stretch their hands like that so easily?” Then you reminded us that it feels uncomfortable for everybody until it doesn’t. That was a huge but simple reminder for me. I started playing keys because I was interested and curios and never thought about being great on it but I got better everyday. Just goin to keep practicing and learn the fundamentals because I can get really good tone and recordings just struggle with the chord voicings and find coordination. The funny part is a lot of producers I sent melodies too think I’m a great guitar player but they don’t know I play stuff one string at a time lol

Got a blue Ibanez from a thrift store 2 years ago (when i was 12) i didn’t have a cord or an amp for it. And before i could even get those my little brother terrorized my guitar, the strings, ridge, was completely broken, and i was like “heck it” so i stored it in my basement. About a year later i headed to the guitar center because of my new fascination of metal, picked up a cheap Squier aaaaannd the nut got loose ofc, one year after that (now) i decided to take both of those to get them fixed, it really wasn’t that much obviously, but i still wouldn’t be able to fix it myself coz i’m a dumb dumb head, i think that once i start getting the hang of it i’m gonna get a slightly cooler looking, newer, but not too expensive guitar. (Also can anyone recommend me any guitars that are good for metal??)

No. 6: be clear about your intention, do not learn guitar for other people or for how other people see you. Many guitars aren't given a true chance and end up being sold again because people wanted to just be rockstars in a day, impress girls with little effort or because their parents pressured them into learning an instrument they did not love. It can actually ruin music for people. That will be the no. 1 reason if you quit, lose your enthusiasm or keep at it and love it. Respect your intention and go for an instrument you love.
@guyonyoutube_417 жыл бұрын
That's true but some people can just pick up a guitar and play. I was at my cousin's house and his little brother's babysitter heard me play and asked can I play something, she did, I said " I didn't know that you played" she said " first time" and exactly the same with a piano.

For all of my fellow beginners out there - if you come across the bad "I don't feel like playing today" thing, I have an advice for you. Just force yourself to pick up a guitar. @YourGuitarSage Thank you so much for this, My little brother is a beginner and he isn’t getting guitar as naturally as I did when I first started so I had no clue what to tell him. You are helping me teach him to play and it’s an awesome bonding experience I never thought I would have with him. I was always looking for a good way to re-connect with him after us being separated and in Foster Homes for 9 years. Thank you for not just helping beginners at guitar but also indirectly helping me re-connect with the family I thought I would never be able to connect with again! 😄

I tried playing guitar some time ago, but I stopped, because I just felt like I can't do it. This video showed me the things I did wrong+ it motivated me tu pick up a guitar and practice everyday! Thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Excellent Video! Sorry for butting in, I would love your thoughts. Have you ever tried - Riddleagan Blossoming Solo Remedy (should be on google have a look)? It is an awesome exclusive guide for mastering guitar scales minus the hard work. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my GF finally got astronomical success with it.

Be sure not to forget the "yourguitarsage" part from "basic fingering technique", because you are going to find vastly differing results.

Getting my first electric guitar this wednesday. Wanted to go electric so I don't subject my wife to a trash compactor going off. I can plug it into my headphones and practice as much as I want. Your videos have been an excellent primer and I will be re-watching them when I get it. Thanks for the time you put into these videos.

I played violin for a couple years so it gave me, a person with tiny hands, a great start with guitar because the positions, stretching, and finger pain was not new.

I'm a lefty but I have right handed guitar ;-;
@foreseengust4 жыл бұрын
I feel like left handed guitarists have an advantage on the so called 'right-handed guitar', the fretting hand has to have more dexterity and strength than the strumming hand. I'm sure the job of the right hand gets more complicated as you advance, but by then you're a musician and your non-dominant hand gains super powers 😁

I love your videos! Thx for being passionate about teaching for free this is exactly what I needed! I’m a self taught player and jumped the gun too soon now I’m coming back for more. I don’t have time to go take lessons anywhere with kids but I made time here at home and I’m soooo glad I found your Info you’re better than any teacher in person seriously. Thank you for your time and wisdom!!

This is a great video, excellent advice. I only offer this as someone who is no more than, at best, an advanced beginner or maybe early intermediate. Relax. Enjoy it. And by that I mean, relax into the basic things described in the video and don't judge yourself. The less worried you are about doing it exactly, the more you'll find yourself leaning into the right way to do it. The guitar just seems to be made that way... the more you relax about, the more you become familiar with it. Like so much I've tried, it seems the less I try to control everything, the easier it all becomes.
