Egorov's transparent textures and electric intensity serve his performances of 20th century music. While he did not commercially record any Prokofiev, there exists a later concert performance of this particular work. Again the restricted range of the TV broadcast does not serve Egorov's naturally full-bodied tone, yet the clarity and intensity of his playing are readily communicated.

Egorb is a thoughtful, free-minded person who loves music and has purity and sorrow.

Прекрасно звучит. Дифференцированно. Вся полифония ясна. И темп 1й части выбран замечательно. Талант исполнителя гармоничен и естественен

Youri worshipped the ground this work was written on. He would sit for hours practicing it with a kind of intensity rare for any artist at his piano on the second floor of the Amsterdam townhouse he shared with Jan. This video evokes such charming memories for me, too, for an extra musical reason. I was perhaps the only, or certainly one of Youri's few western, but Russian speaking friends and colleagues, and it gave him pleasure and no little comfort to talk about all sorts of things in his native language over lunch or dinner at his home. Like the sweater he is wearing in this video - which he must have loved, since he wore it constantly - his home was a modernist fantasy of gray industrial carpet, white neon lights and shiny chrome fixtures, light gray couches and shoji iscreens, and glass. The entire house was decorated in grays, blacks and whites. No color whatsoever. Neither he or Jan were particularly drawn to the sphere of color and you wouldn't find a hint of it in their home.

JBY is dead and whenever he spoke about a pianist, it was only because he loved to brag about some remote acquaintances as close friends. He was a mediocre pianist and his personality was far from pleasant. Doesn't change that fact that Egorov was an incredible pianist as proven by this recording, which is extraordinary and probably the best Prokofiev 8 ever on video, despite the badly out of tune piano.

Superb performance! judging by the cool reaction of the audience, I can't believe they really understood he incredible performance he gave....

Indeed a really superb performance of this work. The audience reaction did not seem "cool" to me. True, it wasn't a burst of "rock-style"enthusiasm, but still a quite fervent response -- in only a few seconds recorded here of the audience response -- to a performance of a work which after all is long, unfamiliar, and arguably difficult to comprehend for the average concert-goer at least on a first hearing.

Brilliant music, especially the third movement which gets under my skin. It makes me wonder how a human ever could conceive this. Thank you mr. P. But only because I find it exceptionally well played here. I've listened to this a zillion times on a Egorov CD. Marvelous to find here some images to it!

I've always thought Egorov was underrated and his concert performance on CD is the best Prokofiev 8th I've ever heard. He displays an incredible demonstration of control, dynamics and storytelling in his performance.

Wow! Egorov had an extraordinary gift and he excelled in the difficult Prokofiev 8th Piano Sonata. Thank you for this invaluable contribution.

One of the most superb recitals captured on television. Part 1 is equally superb. Here, the Prokofiev 8th has a combination of elegant musicianship, crystal clarity, and a dark intense finale filled with incredible virtuosity. A great example off a pianist performing at a much higher level in the concert hall than in the studio. And this is not unique to him, Melodiya has shown us so many examples of Richter, Gilels and others live versus studio. Regardless, this is a fantastic performance here.

Phew. Phenomenal virtuosity (apart from that bit right near the end that everyone makes a mess of), but ... [isn't there always one?] I find he rushes the music, especially in the slow movement (no wistfulness?) and right at the very end. Surely, those stop-starts need to mean something? Here, the pauses are pretty much played through. Gavrilov's is still my favourite (DG) recording of this amazing piece. Thanks for posting, though.

This is better than the live in Amsterdam 1981 recording, although the latter one is wilder and more exciting than this, I like this fresh, clean aproach in the smaller live audience. Is it a German broadcast?

This is a recording from the Stuttgart based SWR broadcast station, so, yes, this is a studio audience from Germany.
