Quadrupedal running guy is my new favorite… it’s a bit inaccurate to say walking upright is how we were “designed”… though it IS an evolutionary advantage that’s currently working out pretty fucking great. The main trade-off for advanced tool creation/use, is that basically all spinal problems we have are a direct result of walking, run (and or sitting) upright with a straight back. There’s a compelling set of theories that humans evolved this particular set of skills as persistence hunters. Basically we could use our complex communication and pattern recognition skills to track large game over long distances in multi-generational packs… eventually carrying tools, though there’s something like a million years in the fossil record where humans were definitely eating meat but hadn’t developed tools yet. So we likely started out just running other animals off cliffs or to complete exhaustion. Humans sweat better than all other mammals cause our hairless bodies function the same way other mammals tongues do. Most other mammals can beat us in a dead sprint and kill us fairly easily one-on-one, but they have to pant to effectively cool-down their bodies. The other theory I’ve heard for upright hairlessness is that we evolved as swimmers in wetlands. This also would free our hands to gather food and eventually develop tools, would explain why we still have hair on top of our heads and it could explain why we’re so prone to developing a relatively thick layer of fat in our skin, which is fairly common among aquatic mammals.
@niclasnyberg41732 жыл бұрын
well said. i've heard of the possible semi-aquatic thing before and it makes perfect sense that it would be easier to learn to walk on two feet while the water is supporting most of the weight. There are certain apes that are like this now. They can barely walk on two feet on land but river crossings they get up on the back legs. What's your thought about the hair on top of our heads? I didn't get the connection with that.
@chazblank27172 жыл бұрын
@@niclasnyberg4173 hair on the head would be for UV radiation protection on the one part of us we need to have out of the water to breath… they’re pretty sure we kept our eyebrows for non-verbal communication, but also to catch debris and keep it from falling in our eyes.

Does anyone else feel like Joe would be really good at running on all fours? They have to do this for sober October 100% that would be hilarious.
@treyjetson53202 жыл бұрын
Its a theory but its far more likely we evolved to see over tall grass. The meat thing is easy even chimps eat meat even though they dont have hunting tools yet, they just eat whatever they catch or find.
@niclasnyberg41732 жыл бұрын
@@treyjetson5320 yeah, tall grass as well, gotta assume there were people on the plains and near the water. The fact that the layer of fat under skin is almost exclusively a marine mammal trait is what makes me wonder

Ok I'm usually not a defender of Seagal, but in this case his point was that instead if hitting straight at the throat, which would crush or damage your wind pipe, if you start from the chest and come up, you end up hitting under the jaw, which avoids a direct hit to the wind pipe. Point was to take someone down, but not potentially maining or killing them.
